Northgate Marching Band
In high school I was a part of the Northgate Marching Band Drumline. I auditioned my freshman
year and was put on top bass. At the time the line was dominated by girls, so I felt very
comfortable and made a lot of friends. During the winter season I auditioned for snare. In
drumline, the snare drum is the most exposed drum, therefore it is reserved for the more
advanced players. I was told to go home and work on some things, and so I did. I practiced for a
few hours and the next day after practice I was told I was on snare. I marched snare from then on,
freshman year all the way through my senior year. Although this was a main goal of mine, it was
not my only goal in the drumline. In marching bandwe had roles called Section Leaders. A section...

My sophomore year I tried out just to go through the process and be prepared, but my junior year
I tried out for real. I was trying out as a minority. I was the youngest junior on the line, now the
only girl on the line, and I had been on snare the least amount of everyone else on snare. After a
week had gone by, we had our band banquet. During the banquet they would announce all of the
new section leaders. They took us into the hall and I was told I was the new section leader for the
drumline. This role is held very high in the Northgate Marching Band, because if you hold this
position, you are a leader of the band. Now that I had the title I needed to accomplish one more
thing. In drumline we have a center snare. The center snare is the most advanced player on the
line, they count off all the exercises and they are the person you listen to when playing. Our
audition process was intense, because again I was the one with the least experience on snare. I
absorbed every piece of criticism I received and I applied every fix to better myself as a

Elizabeth Anscombe Intention
Elaborate on Elizabeth Anscombe s account of the relation between acting intentionally and acting
for a reason.
Introduction
During the course of this assignment we will explore whether whatever is done intentionally is
done for a reason by taking a look at Anscombe s set of notes called Intention. Elizabeth Anscombe
was one of the most influential women philosophers and a very important twentieth century
philosopher. She translated some of Ludwig Wittgenstein s work; hence the references in her book
Intention.
My understanding of the relation between acting intentionally and acting for a reason was found by
understanding the concepts she defines and analyses which are mostly found in the early stages of
her notes. Anscombe defines intention as acting under a description . What distinguishes us rational
agents is the capacity to step outside ourselves and deliberate about different possible courses of
action i.e. we can think hypothetically. This capacity appears to be evident in language. It enables
us not only to act voluntarily but also intentionally.
Different Senses of Intention
An agent is in the privileged position to declare one s intentions. The description of one s actions
and one s intentions are the same. Anscombe starts off her notes by describing three different ways
in which we speak about intention in our language:
1.Intention ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

intention would be more on the line of I am going for a bike ride . The distinction between the two,

arises when we want to underline a theoretical definition of predictions and expressions of intention
and when we want to identify the roots of this intuitive

Analysis Of Bag Ban Bad For Freedom And Environment
In the argumentative essay Bag Ban Bad for Freedom and Environment , produced by the author
Adam B. Summers, it narrowly focuses on the topic of the banning of plastic bags. The author
illustrates the ban is bad can affect society in many ways. Adam provides the information through
various amounts of stylistic elements, tools, word choice and so on A prime example clearly
conducted throughout the essay is through ethical appeal/reasoning. Throughout the paragraphs,
Adam supports his claim by it backing it up with ethical appeal. For example, paper bags, plastic
bags require 70 percent less energy to make, and utilize 4 percent less water to make. To provide

Economic Challenges Before The Great Depression In The US
Just as the world has experienced economic challenges in the past, so is it today. Before the
Great Depression took place in the USA in 1929,USA had witnessed 19 recessions. And we have
continued to encounter economic recessions to this day, the most recent one being that of 2008
which began in the USA but also had ripple effects on the entire global economy. These economic
recessions have a negative impact on the well being of human kind. For example during the period
of the Great Depressionin the USA: 12 million people lost their employment, 85 thousand
businesses collapsed and a multitude of households were unable to hold their homes.
Because of the aforementioned consequences of economic recessions mankind with our

The Main Theories of How the Process of Aging Works Essay
The Main Theories of How the Process of Aging Works
This report outlines the main theories of how the process of aging works. Since researchers have
not discovered a universally accepted theory of aging, the theories discussed are potential
explanations of how we age. The likelihood of each hypothesis is considered roughly equal. The
different theories discussed focus on the workings of different parts of the body, from the
molecular level of DNA mutations and replication, to the organism level of becoming worn out.
Aging is a very complex and gradual process, and its ongoing operation is present to some degree
in all individuals. It is a journey to the maturity, as well as to the degeneration of the body. Because

Since genes on DNA code for specific proteins, mutated genes may produce defective proteins,
which do not work properly. Many proteins can be affected, such as enzymes, proteins comprising
muscle tissue, and a recently discovered type of protein called transcription factors, which bind to
DNA and regulate the individual activities of genes themselves. Physical mutagens are substances
that increase the chance of mutation and include such physical phenomena as x rays and
radioactivity from radium. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan are
examples of physical mutagens that caused an increase in the number of cases of leukemia.
Certain chemicals and radiation cause mutations to occur in DNA by giving off high energy
particles. These particles collide with the DNA and knock off atoms of the DNA randomly,
damaging it. DNA consists of sequences of four possible nitrogenous bases: adenine, guanine,
cytosine, and thymine, paired so that adenine always pairs with thymine, and guanine always pairs
with cytosine. As cells repair the damaged DNA, a different DNA base is often substituted. This
base substitution is known as a point mutation and can cause the production of a defective or
damaged protein. Apart from being caused by radiation or chemicals, mutations also occur
spontaneously but at lower rates. Physicist Leo Szilard and biochemist Denham Harmon proposed
that because most

Analysis Of The Book Matilda By Roald Dahl
This blog will focus on the storybook Matilda written by Roald Dahl. Matilda is about a special
girl forced to put up with a rough, distant father and mother. Worse, Miss Trunchbull, the evil
principal at Matilda s school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has
the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull s fury and fight back
against her mean parents with the help of her friends and her very kind teacher, Miss Honey. As a
female, I believe in empowering women and believing in the fact that women can become their own
people and look after themselves and accomplish achievements. This mainly links in with the gender
role of identity as it shows a huge part in Roald Dahls work within this book. Roald Dahlhad grew
up with his mother, three sisters and a nanny, a house full of women. This enabled him to become
an advocate of female power.
As in a lot of children books, most of the time it is usually the boys that are playing the role of
heroes, and this is due to a gender stereotype as in a lot of cases it is shown that males are the
strong ones and should take care of the female. However, Dahl shows that girls are able to
perfectly fit this hero role just as well which I find very different to other sources of media as he
empowers the females from the start to the end. If other children were to read this book it will
allow them to follow the notion that girls could do what they want and are allowed to fight for

The Disease Of Behcet s Disease
In 1937, a rare disease called Behcet s Disease (BD) was first described by Dr. Hulusi Behcet,
who is a dermatologist in Turkey. The disease is also known as Behcet s syndrome and described
by The American Behcet s Disease Association (2014) as a rare, chronic, autoimmune,
autoinflammatory disorder (American Behcet s Disease Association [ABDA], 2014). The
disease, recognized worldwide, can affect multiple systems in the human body and associated
with morbidity and mortality. Dr. Hulusi Behcet (2014) first described the disease as a triad of
oral ulcers, genital ulcers and ocular inflammation (ABDA, 2014). The epidemiology behind
this disease indicates its prevalence in multiple countries. It is less prevalent in the United
States and Western Europe. According to National Organization for Rare Disorders (2015),the
highest prevalence rate, 80 370 cases per 100,000, of this disease is in Turkey, as well as in
Japan, Korea, China, Iran and Saudi Arabia (National Organization for Rare Disorders [NORD],
2015). According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, the
disease affects more men than women in Middle Eastern and Asian countries. However, it affects
more women than men in the United States (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal
and Skin Disease [NIAMS], 2015). It can develop in people of all ages but it tends to develop in
people between the ages of 20 to 40. The Behcet s disease symptoms vary from person

Montaigne in The Return of Martin Guerra by Natalie Zemon...
In The Return of Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis portrays Jean de Coras as a
knowledgeable, impartial judge, fully capable of recognizing female intelligence and of looking
beyond the status quo in his pursuit of truth. Like any judge, Coras has the discretion to select or
omit certain pieces of evidence, the power to shape the official and accepted version of the truth;
however, Michel de Montaigne would argue that Coras has a high probability of reaching a
distorted verdict. Montaigne s Essays claims that knowledge is acquired through the process of self
questioning, but this self questioning presumes that knowledge begins with ones own perspectives
and not with disciplines (such as a medicine and law), which are bound to... Show more content on

King Pyrrhus states, I know not...what kind of barbarians...these may be; but the disposition of this
army, that I see, has nothing of barbarism in it (Cannibals, 1).
Thus, after witnessing the advanced military formation of the Roman Army, King Pyrrhus changed
his judgment and could no longer view the Romans as barbarians. Knowledge then, is required to
make a reasonable judgment and knowledge should be acquired firsthand.
In the next paragraph, Montaigne reveals his source of information stems from his servent who
witnessed it firsthand: I long had a man in my house that lived ten or twelve years in the New
World (Cannibals, 1). Knowledge, then, can be acquired from a reliable source. However,
Montagine purports that not all knowledge is desirable. This is illustrated when Montagine
states, I am afraid our eyes are bigger than our bellies, and that we have more curiosity than
capacity; for we grasp at all, but catch nothing but wind (Cannibals, 1). Here, Montagine is
cautious on the discovery of the New World because the exploration of an unknown region can
manifest to something more than one can grasp or it could end up being like the wind no great
discovery at all. It is important to note that Montaigne makes reasonable judgments from the
information provided by his servant, who had lived in the New World.
Contrary from educated men, Montaigne s servant is a simple man who is not compelled to

Essay about Affirmative Action is Not Reverse Discrimination
Affirmative Action is Not Reverse Discrimination
Affirmative Action is not meant to help blacks because of the color of their skin, but because they
deserve compensation for past and continuing injustices. Opponents may criticize the wisdom of
how this compensation is meted out, but they cannot question the principle of compensatory
damages, which enjoys a long tradition in our society.
To many opponents of affirmative action, a color blind society should not discriminate at hiring
time on the basis of color, sex, etc. This would make the preferential hiring of blacks just as wrong
as preferential hiring of whites.
Furthermore, opponents claim, the introduction of past injustices does not change this logic. If
blacks were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The situation is akin to the Jews who survived the Holocaust. Germany paid a large sum in
compensatory damages to the state of Israel after World War II, and no one decried this as reverse
racial discrimination.
Now, opponents of affirmative action may question whether affirmative action is the right way to
go about correcting past and present injustice. For example, can we compensate the living for sins
committed against their ancestors? Is it right to compensate groups instead of specifically harmed
individuals? But these are separate issues, ones that should be addressed elsewhere. (The reader
may find them in the next essay.) The point here is that affirmative action is intended not as reverse
discrimination, but as compensatory damages for injustice.
Moral absolutism
Those who use the term reverse descrimination are actually engaging in moral absolutism, a
completely unworkable concept that has never been practiced by any society in history. An
example may best highlight its difficulties. Suppose our society passed a law that says, No one
shall forcefully take a television set from the possession of another. But the next day your neighbor
comes over to your house with a gun and forcefully takes your television set from you. Having
identified your neighbor, you call the police. The police show up at his door and demand that he
surrender the television; he refuses, whereupon they pull

Poets Explore the Theme of Death in Educating for Leisure,...
Structural techniques play a huge role in many poems due to the fact that structure sometimes
reflects what is happening in the poem. This can clearly be seen with all the poems, in Remember
and Do not go gentle into that good night a strict, tight and ridged structure and this helps reinforce
the meaning that the poets are trying to portray. With Do not go gentle the structure of the poem in
some respects contrasts what is actually happening with Dylan Thomas, with father dying; his head
is all over the place but the structure is tight and strict. Villanelles are very traditional strict
structures and the message that is portrayed through Do not go gentle contrasts it as it is an
untraditional message. In addition to this the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though it is not evident we could interpret that the mother in the poem is becoming
hysterical and agitated and due to the fact that her she needs to Carefully part it . This is
because the child is, as we find out later on, is dying. As for the readers, they are anxious due to
the fact that Chinua Achebe slowly drip feeds information to the reader allowing many different
interpretations and events to evolve in the readers mind. As for E for L the lack of strict and
ridged structure and the quick evolution of the structure in some aspects mimic the thought
process of the character within the poem. The character within the poem is psychotic and his
mind is all over the place j, on top of that his killing tendencies and his thirst for murder quickly
evolves from a fly to a goldfish to a human just like structure quickly evolves. This lack of strict
poetic structure allows for the poet to get the readers full attention and for them to grasp the
reader and get their message about death across in the most effective way possible. Finally In The
man he killed and Havisham a cyclical structure is used and this helps reinforce the meaning that
the poet is trying to portray. With The man he killed the structure reinforces the dilemma that the
character is facing as he has killed a man; his head is all over the place but the structure is tight and
traditional and this can be seen with the ABAB rhyme scheme. In addition to this the poem

My Professional Goals
2017 Goals...
People always say, New year, New me, but they never have actual goals that they achieve. I want
to achieve three things this year, not changing me but changing what I do. I want to become a top
pitcher in my 14u comp. league. I want to be able to bench at least 120+, by the very end of the
year. I also want to achieve a higher GPA from the next few quarters throughout the year. I want a

mind on achieving them.

I am always stressed about my grades, but I have a plan to get better grades by the end of 2017,
in the four quarters I have left. To achieve my goal I plan to use the resources I have, but since I
always forget about my iPad, and I am always on my phone, I want to set reminders to do my
homework on my phone. The main reason I don t get good grades is because I don t do the
homework. It is important to do your homework because it is only 30% of your grade, there is a
lot of it. I have learned that another thing that enables me to get my grades, is I forget what
homework I have so I want to put all my homework in with the reminders as they are given to
me. Doing my homework will also help me on tests to get better grades. While having better grades
it means I won t be as stressed and I can get more accomplished as well. v With very advanced
plans on all of my three goals I think I can achieve all of them. I also think all of them will
compliment each other. When I am less stressed I tend to perform better in other things and be
more energetic, which will help softball in itself, but it will help me grow a lot quicker in benching,
so that will help in softball much more. In 2017 I will achieve my goals, and do whatever it takes
to do so. I am very excited for this year, because I think I will grow more than every other year.
With a plan I will be the best I can be. Not a new me but a better

Raymond Barrio and Steve Lawhead are both well known poets, with varying styles. But are
some of their works similar? The Plum Plum Pickers (RB) and The Sun Goes Down on Summer

about a man, Manuel, who believes he is worked like an animal. Beast, savage, brute, predator,
animal, locked, wreck; these are the words that are used to describe him. He s trapped in a never

He describes summer as cool, gentle waters, something he likes and he s now used to. As he
describes high school and not gentle waters, like a pressure cooker of competition, something
that s always changing and that he is not ready for. He tells how the first day of school is always
the worst because everything from the year before has changed, you don t know who your
friends are yet, and it s hard to pick up everything where you left off from the previous year. He
wants to be himself, and he expresses that is the reason he quit football, he didn t know why he
was playing, or who he was playing for. He says school is full of things that take away freedom
and keep you from being who you really are. And that being yourself isn t easy. At the end of the
poem, you see a resolution of his thoughts. He realizes that he might learn something about
himself, and a new school year means a brand new start, and he comes to terms with his first day
back to high school. Lawhead doesn t use sound very much throughout his poem. Although, he
does use rhythm. He uses repeating and similar words and phrases to create emphasis. The
beginning is slower and drags out to give a sense of anxiety, and starts to pick up near the end to
give a sense of optimism. Lawhead s structure contains forty

The Iraqi war for instance could show the positive aspect of the EU soft power that overcame the
US in fighting terrorism. However, EU soft power if facing many challenges due to economic
and military powers that transferred the EU into a neutral and weak security actor that cannot
play an influential role in the conflicts. This weak presence of the EU soft power can be realised
in the Afghanistan conflict and Ukraine crisis. Another reason for the weakness of EU s soft power
is the fact that the formation of the EU based more on economic reasons rather than political values.
It is true that the EU through its communities as the European Political Cooperation ( EPC) has

The Importance Of The Fourth Crusade
Throughout 11th, and 12th century, the Catholic Church had a keen interest in the religious areas
ruling the Holy Land, it must have been taken for granted in western Christendom that another
major campaign to recover the Holy place would be attempted . The Holy Land represented a
critical historic point for the Christian Orthodox, and Islam on account of its religious monuments
and the power that accompanied the control of the city. To both religions, the significance of the
city was essential, since Jesus and Muhammad were viewed as higher beings in Jerusalem, so
pressures increased all through the Crusadestwo hundred year permanence. With the Muslim
religion on the rise in the Middle East and Asia Minor (Asia Minor, a peninsula also called Anatolia,
comprises most of the Asian part of modern Turkey and the Armenian highland. ) growing
gradually, the Catholic Church discovered themselves in exigent circumstances where they were

Character Analysis Of To Kill A Mockingbird
Maturity is learning to walk away from people and situations that threaten your peace of mind,
self respect, values, morals or self worth , Anonymous. This quote describes perfectly one of the
most important characters in the well known book, To Kill a Mockingbird. The book, To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is a story about a young girl named Scout, her brother Jem, and their
single father Atticus. The book tells a story about the rough life living in southern Alabama in the
early 1930 s tackling serious topics such as racism and rape, which makes to book even more
important to our present day society. The considerate, well rounded, and wise Atticus Finchhas

Atticus Finch is a well rounded mature person. This trait is strongly shown throughout the book
including the following statement, Atticus, I said one evening, what exactly is a nigger lover? ...
Atticus said, Scout, nigger lover is just one of those terms that don t mean anything like snot

Comparing Modern Society In The Giver And Modern Day Society
What do you think a perfect world is ? Picture yourself in a perfect world where everyone was the
same . In this world theres no one to judge because everyone is the same . This type of world
could remind us of our own in many aspects . Consequently , there are many ways to see
comparisons and contrasts to the utopian society in the novel and in our modern day society. In
the book The Giver and the modern society is similar because we both can die at some point .
They dont really know when their going to die . Our modern society and Jonas soceity both have
the option to get release from doing something wrong . Both society have schools where children

Feinberg Court Case
I agree with Feinberg. Criminals who have no or limited ability to perceive their motivations
should be treated differently from a legal standpoint. As a society it is difficult to justify blaming
these criminals for their actions and it is not morally acceptable. I also agree with Feinberg that
even if these people are excused from the legal punishments for actions that it is likely that they
should be removed from society in a different way, especially if there is a large likelihood that they
will cause harm. A case that exemplifies that is Durham V. United States. The argument in this case
is that Monte Durham was convicted of housebreaking and the case that will be quoted is an appeal
case in which they are insisting the conviction is overturned... Show more content on

The jurors should rule someone guilty if they believe that the accused was suffering from a mental
illness at that time and if the accused was suffering from a condition, but the condition did not
affect their actions, then they must be ruled guilty. However, if the accused was suffering from a
condition and the criminal behavior was a product of that condition then, the criminal should be
ruled not guilty. The court s ruling further exemplified some of the points made by Feinberg when
it discussed that jurors should be instructed by a psychiatrist about the mental illness and the
effects that the mental illness had in the specific case, and that the juror s should ask question
along the lines of did the accused know the difference between right and wrong, and did the
accused lose the power of will. These both relate to Feinberg because depending on the answer of
the psychiatrist the accused may have lost their rational ability to understand right and wrong or

Kant On Good Will
Nothing is good without limitation, except good will.
Our character traits, temperament, and talents can be good or evil, beneficial or harmful.
Even our good fortune (properties we are born into or receive by chance) can be used for good or
arrogantly; good will bends it to good purpose.
Anyone (rational impartial spectator) would be dissatisfied upon seeing another person lacking
good will yet enjoying life s riches.
Thus, good will is a necessary condition for deserving happiness.
Even those qualities (here he considers moderation, self control, and sober reflection) which
support good will cannot be held as absolutely good (good without limitation); they still require a
good will.
Good will has supreme value by virtue of its consideration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Surely, then, reason serves not the aim of happiness, but another aim for existence possessing much
more dignity.
This other aim is the highest good, for which reason is a necessary ingredient. For natural ends,
instinct (drives to satisfy hunger, thirst, and the need for shelter) is sufficient; however, the greatest
good demands reason. This is so because the greatest good may adversely affect the individual who
by reason is contemplating a course of action.
Kant then discusses the concept of duty: does it always serve the good, or can it also be self
serving? Even the preservation of life must be considered as either conforming with duty or arising
from duty, a moral obligation. Thus, only actions which have moral value can be sufficiently
described as duty.
Happiness is a powerful motivator; lack thereof can lead one to violate one s duties.
Motivation to satisfy one inclination and achieve happiness in the present can outweigh
consideration of a later (i.e., more distant temporally) consequence. Abiding by one s duty to
achieve happiness provides moral value.
Thus, love as a duty can be commanded; such love is practical and based on the will not melting

created by students (soldiers) of King College School, to a small village in Nova Scotia, named
Windsor. The game used to be a field game, called Hurley, and soon enough they decided to take
it to the ice, where it earned the name Ice Hurley . Over time, the game finally earned a new

Apple Ipod And The Ipod
The alarm clock rings and its time to go for a jog and get the morning routine off to a good start.

In its attempt to monopolize, Anheuser Busch InBev has set a primary focus on forming stronger
relationships with distributors throughout the country, including in Cincinnati. Some of these
relationships have gone as far as Anheuser Busch InBev buying out distributors. This dynamic
worries Dan more than any other aspect, as a local microbrewery s success is based highly on its
relationship with distributors and their ability to effectively sell the product. This monopoly has
shown an interest in and ability to strangle Listermann s at the distribution stage, causing the
microbrewery drop offs in profit and reputation in the eyes of distributors. Some small breweries
have already caved in under the pressure, as part of this monopolization includes buying up any

Body-Checks In Hockey
Stephen McKichan, a goaltender for the Milwaukee Admirals, suffered a career altering injury
during December 15, 1990 minor league hockey game against the Peoria Rivermen. The injury
occurred during the third period of the game when the Rivermen skater, Tony Twist, body

The body check occurred both during a play stoppage and after a referee had twice blown his

incident and would later be levied an indefinite suspension by IHL, the league in which the teams
play. Body checks are common in the game of hockey and don t usually result in criminal or civil...

the poem Mother in Refugee Camp, Chinua Achebe exposes the reader to the realistic and horrific

[Title]
Introduction What is the effect of regime type on the duration of war and war s impact on
political leaders? And how do these effects range in comparison to other variables, such as
wealth, military power, or alliances? I hypothesize the following: longer wars have a worse impact
on democracies than on dictatorships and mixed regimes, and as a result are shorter. In the first
section of this paper, I define key terms used throughout the paper and review literature and theory
related to the topic of war and regime type. In the next section, I
Background and Literature Review Using [cite] s definition of regime type, I have identified
three types of regimes in this paper: democracies, dictatorships, and mixed regimes. Democracies
are defined as regimes that do not repress its people and include the highest proportion of the
populace; dictatorships are highly repressive and exclude most of the population; and mixed
regimes use moderate repression and exclude a significant proportion of their populace (CITE). To
understand the reasoning behind my hypothesis, I turn to the democratic and inter democratic
peace theories, in which my hypothesis is fundamentally rooted. These theories come from the
liberal school of thought in international relations and posit that democracies do not, or are less
likely, to go to war, and do not go to war with other democracies (Elman 758). There is much

CNBC estimated that over 15 trillion frequent flyer miles were outstanding as of May 2011
(Whitman, 2011). Today, major U.S. airlines employ one of two methods to account for FFP
liabilities for mileage credits earned by paying passengers: either the Deferred Revenue Method or
the Incremental Cost Method. The Deferred Revenue Method recognizes a liability for the fair
value of the outstanding mileage credits (with fair value defined under International Financial
Reporting Standards (IFRS) as the amount for which the award credits could be sold separately )
(KPMG, 2008). The Incremental Cost Method recognizes a liability for the marginal cost of
providing air transportation to eligible award passengers (i.e. the cost of taxes, fuel, food, etc. to
fly one additional passenger on a seat that otherwise would have been empty generally a nominal
amount). Incremental cost accounting has been subject to scrutiny several times throughout the
history of FFPs. Within the past few years airlines have reduced seating capacity due to high fuel
prices and weaker travel demand during the global economic recession, causing flights to be fuller
on average and increasing the chance that, for any given seat, a passenger flying on redeemed
frequent flyer miles could displace a fare paying passenger (notwithstanding the fact that many
airlines limit the number of seats eligible to be reserved using FFP

Development Of The Metropolitan Or Urban University Essay

The metropolitan or urban university is one of the newer institutional models within the American

how their institutions were different from all other institutional models (Whitney, 2005).

Symbolism In Alice Walker s Everyday Use
Alice Walker, author of Everyday Use , was a well known author. She used three types of
symbolism such as the quilts made by African American that bore significances, the house that
was burned and the one that was rebuilt, and hands is various areas of the story. The main
characters were the mama, sisters Maggie, and Dee. Maggie was the young girl who was scared
due to burns, and Dee who was the Miss Goody two shoe type of girl and also thought she could
get anything she wanted.
Different types of symbolism are used to add significance to point out the uniqueness in
connotations that a writer uses when writing literature. An author s literary works may include
multiple symbols to give the perception to his or her readers. When an author uses a symbol, it is
intended to heighten the sense of a user s communication of literary works. The three key symbols
in the short story in Everyday Use is that of quilts stored away in a trunk, the house, and hands. The
quilts represented the African Americans women s talent of creativity from those that were made
from by other individuals from other people. The quilts depicted that of a guiding principle
during the time of slavery for which they were used to send a form of communication to other
slaves (Kirszner and Mandell, 2012). As stated by Kirszner and Mandell (2012), One design, the
Log Cabin, was hung outside to mark that of a house of refuge for fugitive slaves. Other quilts

What I m From Hawaii
2016 Kealoha,Tiare College Essay I m from Hawaii, a volcanic island where lava bubbles up like
a molten spring of fire and stone. I was born to a Hawaiian father and an American mother. We
lived off grid in the district of Puna near the billowing smoke of Kilauea. Puna is like the wild
west, a rugged, rural area. It isn t uncommon for people to grow their own food and raise their
own stock. Many live off generators and small catchment tanks for plumbing. I remember going
out in the night, flashlight in my mouth, right hand on the generator keeping it steady, left hand
pouring gasoline, then furiously tugging at the string to start the generator. It was best to
complete homework before nightfall so you wouldn t have to rely on lights that could go out if
the electricity died. Change has always been a part of my life. One of the biggest changes
happened when I was 15 years old. I started to think of college in my last years of middle school.
Until then College was someone else s reality. Not many people from my community attended
college. They felt that their futures were supposed to be spent being a clerk or fisherman. The
change happened on a trip to visit mainland college towns, explore possibilities beyond the
islands cultural landscape With the help of my aunt, I created a bakery product, brownie balls. To
raise money for the trip, I baked and sold these brownie balls at the farmers market. The process

Vodafone New Zealand s New Office Space Model
Office space is often a business s second largest cost after payroll, and is one area where
companies can make substantial savings. By challenging the traditional criteria around spatial
design and allocation, you can radically improve the value of your buildings for your business and
create a workplace that supports your company s culture and people.
By adopting this model, VodafoneNew Zealand was able to:
Reduce facilities operating costs by around 25%
Reduce staff downtime by 6%
Accommodate 1,360 people in a space traditionally designed for 900, saving lease costs of $2.2m
per annum and fit out costs of $11m
Align its property cycle (ordinarily 10 20 years) to its business cycle (less than 3 years), therefore
aligning its facilities with ongoing developments in the workplace.
This whitepaper examines why other businesses may wish to consider rethinking their physical
space and staff working styles within that space. It looks at hjow technology can be used as a key
enabler to provide an environment that supports the way a business and its people want to work,
and demonstrates how a business can save up to 25% of its building facilities costs (by reducing
electricity, cleaning and rent) in the process.
The Vodafone New Zealandvision for v.nue was to create flexible and collaborative ways of
working that would increase productivity and enable the business to quantify its proposition around
leveraging mobility.

Comparing Virgin Of The Rocks And The Last Supper
Introduction
This paper will explore the detail expressed through religion based renaissance art. The two
works to be explored here are The Last Supper and the Virgin of the Rocks, which both have
Christian references and have properties owing to the depictions of the main character in the
painting. The Last Supper was created in 1498, in Milan and is on oil and plaster; Virgin of the

paintings show that there is a more human element to these people. In Virgin of the Rocks, Mary
is sitting on the ground in a place where there are jagged rocks and various types of shrubbery. It
seems to even be a deserted area that is secluded and over grown. The figures are all located in a
fabulous and mystical landscape with rivers that seem to lead nowhere and bizarre rock
formations, in the foreground we see carefully observed and precisely rendered plants and
flowers (Syson and Billinge, p. 5).This type of representation of Mary is referred to as the
Madonna of Humility (Freke Gandy, p. 34). When it comes to Virgin of the Rocks, the point of
interest that reveals the paintings subject are the hands of the people. Mary has her right arm
around the infant Saint John the Baptist who is making a gesture of prayer to the Christ child, the
Christ child in turn blesses St. John. Mary s left hand hovers protectively over the head of her son
while an angel looks out and points to St. John (p.

Biological Altruism Is A Phenomenon Defined By French...
Biological altruism is a phenomenon defined by French philosopher Auguste Comte as behavior by
an individual that increases the fitness of another individual while decreasing the fitness of the
actor. The coinage of this term posed a difficult question to the field of evolutionary science, as it
contradicted with Charles Darwin s definition of the mechanism of natural selection. In The Origin
of Species, Darwin explains the mechanism of natural selection by stating that individuals having
any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and
procreating their kind and On the other hand, we may feel sure that any variation in the least
degree injurious would be rigidly destroyed (83). The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is due to the selfishness that lies within human motives. By examining altruistic actions in
society, politics, and economics, we can determine that many acts of seemingly altruistic
behavior are driven by ulterior, selfish motives. During his 2012 presidential campaign, Senator
Mitt Romney released his 2011 tax forms under intense pressure and scrutiny from the
Democratic Party and when he did, many major news stations announced in bold headlines that
Romney donated 29.4% of his annual income to charities while Obama only donated 21.8%.
This helped his campaign as republican ideology states that if tax rates are lower, people will
donate more money to charities of their own choice. Republicans believe that this method is
more efficient than taxes, as the government doesn t dictate how much of whose money goes
where, the people are the ones to decide how to donate their money to whichever charity they
choose. However, democrats urged the populace to scrutinize the tax forms, as certain sections
of the forms seemed dubious. Obama paid a rate of 26% federal income taxes that year while
Romney only paid a rate of 14%. As experts delved deeper into the forms, they came to realize
some facts that discredited Romney. Part of Romney s charitable donations were set up as a
Charitable Remainder UniTrust, a system for donations that was done away with in 1997 because it

The sacbut is similar to a trombone because it has a slide that can be pushed or pulled, but the
instrument itself imitates the sound of a cornett. The Sacbut player was normally a very talented
musician and was normally placed on rapid coloraturas, having to jump ranges of 4 octaves.
Shawm
The shawm was the most important double reeded instruments because the tone of the instrument
made it great for outdoor performances. The shawm was mostly used in typical Sacracean military
bands.

The psaltery was used in whatever music the occasion demanded, it had no specific task.
3.I like the sound of the Harp the best because of its warm, angelic, soothing sound. Even outside
of this class, I love to listen to covers of popular songs, played on the harp, it s just such a pretty
instrument, I love it.
4. To start off, a lot of Renaissance instruments have evolved into the modern day instruments we
use today. Without the weird instruments that were made decades ago, we wouldn t have had the
cool instruments we do today. The issue of tuning and unpleasant sounds has been fixed because
now instruments have tuning valves and other devices to help ease the pain of the horrendous
sound made by out of tune instruments. Next, Medieval instruments were made by hand, and most
of the time were prized possessions that they would never give up, but instruments today are
machine made, and are sold and distributed for a lot of money. Lastly, the difference between
Medieval instruments and modern day instruments, is today we have the saxophone, the best
instrument ever

The Importance to Christian History
Barth stands out in the history of theology as an important source and one of the greatest
theologian of his age. With deep conviction, that theology is a serious and responsible intellectual
discipline with its own proportions. Barth used his time to serve God through his teaching and
writing. Barth taught that our knowledge corresponds to God s knowledge when our thought is
conformed to God s Word, and that our guidance is found in the decision making of faithful
obedience. God endowed the human being with decision making by grace in Christ to become a
decision making agent. Richardson, K. A. (2004), p 210,para2 . Barth s work is a testimony of the

Dry Scalp
Dry scalp is a common problem for many people. It can be embarrassing to go in public with
visible traces of dry scalp. For sanity and for health purposes, it s wise to attach the problem head
on with a dry scalp treatment. Consider these ideas and implement them as needed.
1. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is one of the most powerfully potent oils on the market. It is the perfect oil for dandruff
because of its antibacterial and anti fungal properties. It s easy to find in any health food retailer
or hair supply store. There are a few ways to treat the scalp with tea tree oil. One of the treatments

It s great fo weight loss, lower blood sugar and regulating the digestive system. It s also great as a
topical treatment for scarring on the skin and it s another perfect dry scalp remedy. The night
before it s time to wash the hair, mix a 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and a 1/2 cup of water
together and place it in the fridge to chill. After cleansing and conditioning the hair, pour this cold
mixture over the scalp and rub it in vigorously. Apple cider vinegar is an excellent treatment
because it is a great disinfectant for the scalp and it is anti inflammatory. The cool temperature is
perfect for revitalizing the scalp and increasing circulation. And as an added bonus, when the mix
falls down the hair shaft, the cool temperature will help close the hair cuticles and seal in the

The Golden Princess Persuasive Speech
As the princess waves her hand slightly to the right, signaling that the young man should choose
the right door, the man starts to cautiously make his way towards it. Just before he could grab the
silver lever, he thinks to himself, What if the princess knew I was going to pick the right door
leading me to the lady, instead of leading me to the ferocious maneating tiger? Why would she want
me to be with another woman whom she thinks is dire? I cannot go through with this barbaric
decision. In one instant, the young man turns swiftly to look back at the Princess, who is staring at
him with fear and softly mouthing to him, Choose the right door. He disregards her and turns to
the left door, which is latched by an enormous silver lever and he opens it with ease. While the
young man tries to see through the blackness, the princess quietly gets up from her seat and sneaks
out of the arena.
The crowd gasps and cheers as the young man and the beating red tiger s eyes meet. The man s
palms start sweating as the the orange and black beast slowly backs him into the door of from
which he entered. Looking above him, he sees that the crowd as well as the king, are smiling and
laughing at him as if it was amusing, but the princess is nowhere in sight. As the young man starts
to scan the crowd for the princess, his thoughts are broken by an enormous bang! Just as the young
man backs into the corner of the opposite end of where he and the tiger met, the princess swings
the door open

  • 2. Northgate Marching Band In high school I was a part of the Northgate Marching Band Drumline. I auditioned my freshman year and was put on top bass. At the time the line was dominated by girls, so I felt very comfortable and made a lot of friends. During the winter season I auditioned for snare. In drumline, the snare drum is the most exposed drum, therefore it is reserved for the more advanced players. I was told to go home and work on some things, and so I did. I practiced for a few hours and the next day after practice I was told I was on snare. I marched snare from then on, freshman year all the way through my senior year. Although this was a main goal of mine, it was not my only goal in the drumline. In marching bandwe had roles called Section Leaders. A section... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My sophomore year I tried out just to go through the process and be prepared, but my junior year I tried out for real. I was trying out as a minority. I was the youngest junior on the line, now the only girl on the line, and I had been on snare the least amount of everyone else on snare. After a week had gone by, we had our band banquet. During the banquet they would announce all of the new section leaders. They took us into the hall and I was told I was the new section leader for the drumline. This role is held very high in the Northgate Marching Band, because if you hold this position, you are a leader of the band. Now that I had the title I needed to accomplish one more thing. In drumline we have a center snare. The center snare is the most advanced player on the line, they count off all the exercises and they are the person you listen to when playing. Our audition process was intense, because again I was the one with the least experience on snare. I absorbed every piece of criticism I received and I applied every fix to better myself as a ... • 3. Elizabeth Anscombe Intention Elaborate on Elizabeth Anscombe s account of the relation between acting intentionally and acting for a reason. Introduction During the course of this assignment we will explore whether whatever is done intentionally is done for a reason by taking a look at Anscombe s set of notes called Intention. Elizabeth Anscombe was one of the most influential women philosophers and a very important twentieth century philosopher. She translated some of Ludwig Wittgenstein s work; hence the references in her book Intention. My understanding of the relation between acting intentionally and acting for a reason was found by understanding the concepts she defines and analyses which are mostly found in the early stages of her notes. Anscombe defines intention as acting under a description . What distinguishes us rational agents is the capacity to step outside ourselves and deliberate about different possible courses of action i.e. we can think hypothetically. This capacity appears to be evident in language. It enables us not only to act voluntarily but also intentionally. Different Senses of Intention An agent is in the privileged position to declare one s intentions. The description of one s actions and one s intentions are the same. Anscombe starts off her notes by describing three different ways in which we speak about intention in our language: 1.Intention ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And we have continued to encounter economic recessions to this day, the most recent one being that of 2008 which began in the USA but also had ripple effects on the entire global economy. These economic recessions have a negative impact on the well being of human kind. • 6. The Main Theories of How the Process of Aging Works Essay The Main Theories of How the Process of Aging Works This report outlines the main theories of how the process of aging works. Since researchers have not discovered a universally accepted theory of aging, the theories discussed are potential explanations of how we age. The likelihood of each hypothesis is considered roughly equal. The different theories discussed focus on the workings of different parts of the body, from the molecular level of DNA mutations and replication, to the organism level of becoming worn out. Aging is a very complex and gradual process, and its ongoing operation is present to some degree in all individuals. It is a journey to the maturity, as well as to the degeneration of the body. Because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since genes on DNA code for specific proteins, mutated genes may produce defective proteins, which do not work properly. Many proteins can be affected, such as enzymes, proteins comprising muscle tissue, and a recently discovered type of protein called transcription factors, which bind to DNA and regulate the individual activities of genes themselves. Physical mutagens are substances that increase the chance of mutation and include such physical phenomena as x rays and radioactivity from radium. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan are examples of physical mutagens that caused an increase in the number of cases of leukemia. Certain chemicals and radiation cause mutations to occur in DNA by giving off high energy particles. These particles collide with the DNA and knock off atoms of the DNA randomly, damaging it. DNA consists of sequences of four possible nitrogenous bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine, paired so that adenine always pairs with thymine, and guanine always pairs with cytosine. As cells repair the damaged DNA, a different DNA base is often substituted. This base substitution is known as a point mutation and can cause the production of a defective or damaged protein. Apart from being caused by radiation or chemicals, mutations also occur spontaneously but at lower rates. Physicist Leo Szilard and biochemist Denham Harmon proposed that because most ... • 7. Analysis Of The Book Matilda By Roald Dahl This blog will focus on the storybook Matilda written by Roald Dahl. Matilda is about a special girl forced to put up with a rough, distant father and mother. Worse, Miss Trunchbull, the evil principal at Matilda s school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull s fury and fight back against her mean parents with the help of her friends and her very kind teacher, Miss Honey. As a female, I believe in empowering women and believing in the fact that women can become their own people and look after themselves and accomplish achievements. This mainly links in with the gender role of identity as it shows a huge part in Roald Dahls work within this book. Roald Dahlhad grew up with his mother, three sisters and a nanny, a house full of women. This enabled him to become an advocate of female power. As in a lot of children books, most of the time it is usually the boys that are playing the role of heroes, and this is due to a gender stereotype as in a lot of cases it is shown that males are the strong ones and should take care of the female. However, Dahl shows that girls are able to perfectly fit this hero role just as well which I find very different to other sources of media as he empowers the females from the start to the end. If other children were to read this book it will allow them to follow the notion that girls could do what they want and are allowed to fight for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The disease is also known as Behcet s syndrome and described by The American Behcet s Disease Association (2014) as a rare, chronic, autoimmune, autoinflammatory disorder (American Behcet s Disease Association [ABDA], 2014). The disease, recognized worldwide, can affect multiple systems in the human body and associated with morbidity and mortality. Dr. Hulusi Behcet (2014) first described the disease as a triad of oral ulcers, genital ulcers and ocular inflammation (ABDA, 2014). The epidemiology behind this disease indicates its prevalence in multiple countries. It is less prevalent in the United States and Western Europe. According to National Organization for Rare Disorders (2015),the highest prevalence rate, 80 370 cases per 100,000, of this disease is in Turkey, as well as in Japan, Korea, China, Iran and Saudi Arabia (National Organization for Rare Disorders [NORD], 2015). • 9. Montaigne in The Return of Martin Guerra by Natalie Zemon... In The Return of Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis portrays Jean de Coras as a knowledgeable, impartial judge, fully capable of recognizing female intelligence and of looking beyond the status quo in his pursuit of truth. Like any judge, Coras has the discretion to select or omit certain pieces of evidence, the power to shape the official and accepted version of the truth; however, Michel de Montaigne would argue that Coras has a high probability of reaching a distorted verdict. Montaigne s Essays claims that knowledge is acquired through the process of self questioning, but this self questioning presumes that knowledge begins with ones own perspectives and not with disciplines (such as a medicine and law), which are bound to... King Pyrrhus states, I know not...what kind of barbarians...these may be; but the disposition of this army, that I see, has nothing of barbarism in it (Cannibals, 1). Thus, after witnessing the advanced military formation of the Roman Army, King Pyrrhus changed his judgment and could no longer view the Romans as barbarians. Knowledge then, is required to make a reasonable judgment and knowledge should be acquired firsthand. In the next paragraph, Montaigne reveals his source of information stems from his servent who witnessed it firsthand: I long had a man in my house that lived ten or twelve years in the New World (Cannibals, 1). Knowledge, then, can be acquired from a reliable source. However, Montagine purports that not all knowledge is desirable. This is illustrated when Montagine states, I am afraid our eyes are bigger than our bellies, and that we have more curiosity than capacity; for we grasp at all, but catch nothing but wind (Cannibals, 1). Here, Montagine is cautious on the discovery of the New World because the exploration of an unknown region can manifest to something more than one can grasp or it could end up being like the wind no great discovery at all. It is important to note that Montaigne makes reasonable judgments from the information provided by his servant, who had lived in the New World. • 10. Essay about Affirmative Action is Not Reverse Discrimination Affirmative Action is Not Reverse Discrimination Affirmative Action is not meant to help blacks because of the color of their skin, but because they deserve compensation for past and continuing injustices. Opponents may criticize the wisdom of how this compensation is meted out, but they cannot question the principle of compensatory damages, which enjoys a long tradition in our society. To many opponents of affirmative action, a color blind society should not discriminate at hiring time on the basis of color, sex, etc. This would make the preferential hiring of blacks just as wrong as preferential hiring of whites. Furthermore, opponents claim, the introduction of past injustices does not change this logic. If blacks were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The situation is akin to the Jews who survived the Holocaust. Germany paid a large sum in compensatory damages to the state of Israel after World War II, and no one decried this as reverse racial discrimination. Now, opponents of affirmative action may question whether affirmative action is the right way to go about correcting past and present injustice. For example, can we compensate the living for sins committed against their ancestors? Is it right to compensate groups instead of specifically harmed individuals? But these are separate issues, ones that should be addressed elsewhere. (The reader may find them in the next essay.) The point here is that affirmative action is intended not as reverse discrimination, but as compensatory damages for injustice. Moral absolutism Those who use the term reverse descrimination are actually engaging in moral absolutism, a completely unworkable concept that has never been practiced by any society in history. An example may best highlight its difficulties. Suppose our society passed a law that says, No one shall forcefully take a television set from the possession of another. But the next day your neighbor comes over to your house with a gun and forcefully takes your television set from you. Having identified your neighbor, you call the police. • 11. Poets Explore the Theme of Death in Educating for Leisure,... Structural techniques play a huge role in many poems due to the fact that structure sometimes reflects what is happening in the poem. This can clearly be seen with all the poems, in Remember and Do not go gentle into that good night a strict, tight and ridged structure and this helps reinforce the meaning that the poets are trying to portray. With Do not go gentle the structure of the poem in some respects contrasts what is actually happening with Dylan Thomas, with father dying; his head is all over the place but the structure is tight and strict. Villanelles are very traditional strict structures and the message that is portrayed through Do not go gentle contrasts it as it is an untraditional message. In addition to this the... As for the readers, they are anxious due to the fact that Chinua Achebe slowly drip feeds information to the reader allowing many different interpretations and events to evolve in the readers mind. As for E for L the lack of strict and ridged structure and the quick evolution of the structure in some aspects mimic the thought process of the character within the poem. The character within the poem is psychotic and his mind is all over the place j, on top of that his killing tendencies and his thirst for murder quickly evolves from a fly to a goldfish to a human just like structure quickly evolves. This lack of strict poetic structure allows for the poet to get the readers full attention and for them to grasp the reader and get their message about death across in the most effective way possible. Finally In The man he killed and Havisham a cyclical structure is used and this helps reinforce the meaning that the poet is trying to portray. With The man he killed the structure reinforces the dilemma that the character is facing as he has killed a man; his head is all over the place but the structure is tight and traditional and this can be seen with the ABAB rhyme scheme. The main reason I don t get good grades is because I don t do the homework. It is important to do your homework because it is only 30% of your grade, there is a lot of it. I have learned that another thing that enables me to get my grades, is I forget what homework I have so I want to put all my homework in with the reminders as they are given to me. • 21. Feinberg Court Case I agree with Feinberg. Criminals who have no or limited ability to perceive their motivations should be treated differently from a legal standpoint. As a society it is difficult to justify blaming these criminals for their actions and it is not morally acceptable. I also agree with Feinberg that even if these people are excused from the legal punishments for actions that it is likely that they should be removed from society in a different way, especially if there is a large likelihood that they will cause harm. A case that exemplifies that is Durham V. United States. The argument in this case is that Monte Durham was convicted of housebreaking and the case that will be quoted is an appeal case in which they are insisting the conviction is overturned... The court s ruling further exemplified some of the points made by Feinberg when it discussed that jurors should be instructed by a psychiatrist about the mental illness and the effects that the mental illness had in the specific case, and that the juror s should ask question along the lines of did the accused know the difference between right and wrong, and did the accused lose the power of will. • 22. Kant On Good Will Nothing is good without limitation, except good will. Our character traits, temperament, and talents can be good or evil, beneficial or harmful. Even our good fortune (properties we are born into or receive by chance) can be used for good or arrogantly; good will bends it to good purpose. Anyone (rational impartial spectator) would be dissatisfied upon seeing another person lacking good will yet enjoying life s riches. Thus, good will is a necessary condition for deserving happiness. Even those qualities (here he considers moderation, self control, and sober reflection) which support good will cannot be held as absolutely good (good without limitation); they still require a good will. Good will has supreme value by virtue of its consideration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surely, then, reason serves not the aim of happiness, but another aim for existence possessing much more dignity. This other aim is the highest good, for which reason is a necessary ingredient. For natural ends, instinct (drives to satisfy hunger, thirst, and the need for shelter) is sufficient; however, the greatest good demands reason. This is so because the greatest good may adversely affect the individual who by reason is contemplating a course of action. Kant then discusses the concept of duty: does it always serve the good, or can it also be self serving? Even the preservation of life must be considered as either conforming with duty or arising from duty, a moral obligation. Thus, only actions which have moral value can be sufficiently described as duty. Happiness is a powerful motivator; lack thereof can lead one to violate one s duties. Motivation to satisfy one inclination and achieve happiness in the present can outweigh consideration of a later (i.e., more distant temporally) consequence. Abiding by one s duty to achieve happiness provides moral value. Thus, love as a duty can be commanded; such love is practical and based on the will not melting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Amy Ly International Policy Seminar Professor Danielson 10 March 2016 [Title] Introduction What is the effect of regime type on the duration of war and war s impact on political leaders? And how do these effects range in comparison to other variables, such as wealth, military power, or alliances? I hypothesize the following: longer wars have a worse impact on democracies than on dictatorships and mixed regimes, and as a result are shorter. In the first section of this paper, I define key terms used throughout the paper and review literature and theory related to the topic of war and regime type. In the next section, I Background and Literature Review Using [cite] s definition of regime type, I have identified three types of regimes in this paper: democracies, dictatorships, and mixed regimes. Democracies are defined as regimes that do not repress its people and include the highest proportion of the populace; dictatorships are highly repressive and exclude most of the population; and mixed regimes use moderate repression and exclude a significant proportion of their populace (CITE). To understand the reasoning behind my hypothesis, I turn to the democratic and inter democratic peace theories, in which my hypothesis is fundamentally rooted. These theories come from the liberal school of thought in international relations and posit that democracies do not, or are less likely, to go to war, and do not go to war with other democracies (Elman 758). CNBC estimated that over 15 trillion frequent flyer miles were outstanding as of May 2011 (Whitman, 2011). Today, major U.S. airlines employ one of two methods to account for FFP liabilities for mileage credits earned by paying passengers: either the Deferred Revenue Method or the Incremental Cost Method. The Deferred Revenue Method recognizes a liability for the fair value of the outstanding mileage credits (with fair value defined under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as the amount for which the award credits could be sold separately ) (KPMG, 2008). The Incremental Cost Method recognizes a liability for the marginal cost of providing air transportation to eligible award passengers (i.e. the cost of taxes, fuel, food, etc. to fly one additional passenger on a seat that otherwise would have been empty generally a nominal amount). Incremental cost accounting has been subject to scrutiny several times throughout the history of FFPs. Within the past few years airlines have reduced seating capacity due to high fuel prices and weaker travel demand during the global economic recession, causing flights to be fuller on average and increasing the chance that, for any given seat, a passenger flying on redeemed frequent flyer miles could displace a fare paying passenger (notwithstanding the fact that many airlines limit the number of seats eligible to be reserved using FFP ... Works to Explore In Virgin of the Rocks, a woman is sitting, surrounded by what looks like three children. They seem to all be paying attention to the child she is holding, who is John the Baptist. In The Last Supper, 13 people sit at a table having a large feast. They are all engrosses in various conversations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of these pictures have but biblical characters into settings that are unusual for the time. May and Jesus are usually depicted on thrones or in ambiguous settings. However, both of these paintings show that there is a more human element to these people. In Virgin of the Rocks, Mary is sitting on the ground in a place where there are jagged rocks and various types of shrubbery. It seems to even be a deserted area that is secluded and over grown. The figures are all located in a fabulous and mystical landscape with rivers that seem to lead nowhere and bizarre rock formations, in the foreground we see carefully observed and precisely rendered plants and flowers (Syson and Billinge, p. 5).This type of representation of Mary is referred to as the Madonna of Humility (Freke Gandy, p. 34). When it comes to Virgin of the Rocks, the point of interest that reveals the paintings subject are the hands of the people. Mary has her right arm around the infant Saint John the Baptist who is making a gesture of prayer to the Christ child, the Christ child in turn blesses St. John. Mary s left hand hovers protectively over the head of her son while an angel looks out and points to St. John (p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Biological Altruism Is A Phenomenon Defined By French... Biological altruism is a phenomenon defined by French philosopher Auguste Comte as behavior by an individual that increases the fitness of another individual while decreasing the fitness of the actor. The coinage of this term posed a difficult question to the field of evolutionary science, as it contradicted with Charles Darwin s definition of the mechanism of natural selection. In The Origin of Species, Darwin explains the mechanism of natural selection by stating that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and procreating their kind and On the other hand, we may feel sure that any variation in the least degree injurious would be rigidly destroyed (83). By examining altruistic actions in society, politics, and economics, we can determine that many acts of seemingly altruistic behavior are driven by ulterior, selfish motives. During his 2012 presidential campaign, Senator Mitt Romney released his 2011 tax forms under intense pressure and scrutiny from the Democratic Party and when he did, many major news stations announced in bold headlines that Romney donated 29.4% of his annual income to charities while Obama only donated 21.8%. This helped his campaign as republican ideology states that if tax rates are lower, people will donate more money to charities of their own choice. Republicans believe that this method is more efficient than taxes, as the government doesn t dictate how much of whose money goes where, the people are the ones to decide how to donate their money to whichever charity they choose. However, democrats urged the populace to scrutinize the tax forms, as certain sections of the forms seemed dubious. Obama paid a rate of 26% federal income taxes that year while Romney only paid a rate of 14%. As experts delved deeper into the forms, they came to realize some facts that discredited Romney. Part of Romney s charitable donations were set up as a Charitable Remainder UniTrust, a system for donations that was done away with in 1997 because it had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
