The evolution of the drums has varied from being made from a simple wood log, to having a
hollow object covered in rawhide, to being completely electronic. Like any instrument, each one
produces a different sound. Some may sound light like a snare, deep like a bass, or metronomic by
simply producing a clicking noise to keep count. Some are completely electronic, even.
Starting from one of the oldest drums in the world, the slit drum is an instrument originating from
Africa that is made from a hollow piece of wood or carved from bamboo. They are typically
made with three slits, (hence the name slit drum ) each one producing a different tone. Like
most drums, slit drums can be played using rubber mallet or with the tips of your finger tips.
Unlike today, where we have telephones and social media to talk to one another long distantly,
this instrument was once, and probably still is, used as a form of communication. For war cries,

reader s theater focuses on all three elements of reading fluency.
Reader s theater requires students to reread, memorize, and perform the text, which are key
components to improving fluency. Adding dramatic performance to a student s reading experience
will positively affect the student s expression, or prosody, a key component to reading fluency
(Nathan Stanovich, 2001). Modeling fluency is essential so students can better understand what
reading fluency sounds like. Proper modeling focuses on accuracy, rate, phrasing, and prosody
(Worthly Broaddus, 2001). Evanchan (2010) suggested proper modeling gives students exposure to
vocabulary above their independent reading level. Modeling allows students to be engaged with
text they may wrestle with independently, and comprehension is also enhanced (Worthly Broaddus,
2001). The student s engagement and evidence of comprehension suggests students listening
comprehension level is at a higher level than their independent reading levels (Evanchan, 2010).
