3. My Academic Goals And Research Interests
My academic goals and research interests have developed significantly over the course of my undergraduate
studies at Susquehanna University. When I first arrived at Susquehanna I was a biology major and had dreams
of medical school. However, by the end of freshman year, I began to develop an interest in neuroscience.
Declaring a major in neuroscience allowed me to explore the components of biology I loved, while
incorporating psychology and chemistry.
My research interests developed from my exposure to the various areas of neuroscience through my
internships, research experiences and courses. I am currently working on a research project, with the goal of
gaining a more thorough understanding of the genes involved in lateral glial cell differentiation in the central
nervous system of Drosophila. I conduct genetic crosses to obtain the desired genomes and collect embryos for
immunostaining. I examine the expression of a conceptual gene, cg31235, which is solely expressed in
longitudinal glial cells, in the presence of the genes Pointed P1 (PntP1) and Reversed Polarity (Repo).
Subsequently, I will then use immunostaining to examine the expression of PntP1 and Repo in order to
determine whether they regulate the genes involved in the in the development and function of longitudinal glia.
Last fall, I presented my research proposal, which was followed by a presentation at the Society of
Developmental Biology this spring. These experiences have strengthened my desire to explore

5. Role Of Women In Sundiata
When it comes to the places and roles of women in Sundiata and in Malian society as depicted in the book
Sundiata, women are held in a place very much unattached and unequal to men. Their roles, throughout the
book, are defined only in relationship to men who hold higher positions of authority and often control the
women with whom they are in relations with. Basically, the book takes place in a sort of patriarchal society
while allowing women very few rights and powers. Like I had said before, they essentially view the women as
their relations and not very much anything else. In this society women are also excluded from official positions
of power. To begin with, the epic in fact is related by a man, and there is not one indication of any woman
griots anywhere within the novel. Right after a recitation of the kings of Mali leading up to Maghan Kon Fatta
(Sundiata s father), a female character is mentioned for the first time: Oh that woman! She is ugly, she is
hideous, and she bares on her back a disfiguring hump. Her monstrous eyes seem to have been merely laid on
her face, but, mystery of mysteries, this is the woman you must marry, sire, for she will be the mother of him
who will make the name of Mali immortal forever (Sundiata, 6). Seemingly right after the first female character
is introduced, she is picked apart describing her physical appearance, and then to her what would be future
roles of wife and mother. Admittedly, the prior is certainly to provide contrast

In her essay, On Being a Cripple , Nancy Mairs, an essayist with multiple sclerosis, writes about her
experiences with her disease. She wants her audience of able bodied people to stop pitying towards disabled
people and instead show acceptance. Mairs achieves her purpose by presenting herself as similar and relatable
to her able bodied audience with many anecdotes and a blunt tone. This discussion of her condition removes
the discomfort about disabilities felt by her audience and allows for them to accept disabled people. While
Maris s primary audience is an able bodied person who supports disabled people, other readers, like someone

She identifies as a cripple , saying I choose this word to name me. She states that she recognizes the
uncomfortable feeling it inflicts on all people, proposing that perhaps I want them to wince. These statements
criticize the stigma around disabilities, and their blunt tone emphasizes the benefits of a straightforward and
precise nature to labels. In this passage from paragraphs two to four, Mairs explains the true meaning of the
words (i.e. disabled , handicapped , and differently abled ) abled and disabled people use to identify those with
disabilities. She continues to discuss these terms and includes her blunt opinion it is typically against the use of
these labels for their lack of accuracy with which [they] describe [her] condition. This shows the abled
audience why the stigma surrounding disabilities should be removed because they would not understand her
perspective as a disabled person without that explanation. On the other hand, her blunt tone and language is
used to convince disabled readers to agree with her message: I refuse to pretend that the only difference
between [abled people] and [disabled people] are the various ordinary ones that distinguish any one person
from another. Both of the effects of Mairs s blunt tone work to achieve her goal of acceptance of disabled
people, but they differ in order to be most effective for their targeted

12. How Did Radical Reconstruction Affect South African Americans
Radical Reconstruction was a unique period in America which enabled previously unseen social and political
changes for the South. However, the impact of these changes was quite limited in their influence. Radical
Reconstruction was the progressive period after Presidential Reconstruction that spanned from the passing of
the Reconstruction Acts in 1867 until The Compromise of 1877. During this period African Americans briefly
felt the political and social effects of government action, namely a political voice, the suppression of racial
terrorist groups and increased civil rights. This essay argues that whilst these were real positive social and
political impacts for Southern African Americans, their effects were not radical. The most notable ... Show

During Radical Reconstruction the government tried to distance African Americans from slavery by providing
new social opportunities. These included the Southern states ratification of the 14th Amendment, increased
education, and stabilising family units . In 1865 to 1866, before Radical Reconstruction, former slaves were
often subject to Black Codes which, based on slave codes, established black subordination to whites . Hence,
their removal and the further attempts to provide opportunities for freedmen was essential in creating life
outside of slavery. Education was one such success, providing African Americans with opportunities to learn
skills outside of labour. One prominent example of the government s investment into education was South
Carolina, which under the work of Cardozo and Smalls, made education mandatory within their state and
helped create over 3000 schools . The effect was clear, black literacy rates doubled during the decade of
Radical Reconstruction and freedmen began expanding their skillset beyond physical labour . Whilst the social
milestones of education and other civil opportunities in the South were a crucial step, ultimately, their progress
was limited by the refusal of the government to provide an economic basis for African Americans to live. Most
Republican politicians after the 14th and 15th Amendments were uninterested in providing freedmen with the
facilities to be equal. This is seen in the quick rejection of Thaddeus Stevens Land Redistribution proposal to
give 40 acres of land to all males . Whilst education did provide opportunity, a refusal to provide land
reinforced a dichotomy between former master and former slave . Hence, even though Radical Reconstruction
did improve the social standing for African Americans, overall the government s failure to

13. Johann Sebastian Bach Impact
Johann Sebastian Bach is primarily known for being an outstanding organist and virtuosic. He was a German
composer in the baroque period. The baroque period is the time where human emotions start to influence music
and is often associated with being romantic. Bach was regarded in his time as an extremist because he had great
detail in his pieces. In his 65 years of life, he wrote over 1,000 compositions. Bach s most famous works
include Toccata and Fugue in D minor, The Well Tempered Clavier, and The Cello Suites. It is safe to say that
Bach left an imprint and is still influential to music all over the world. His pieces are still recognizable and used
in numerous movies. Bach influenced 18th and 19th century composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin,
and Mendelssohn. Bach has several monuments including the one in Leipzig built in 1908 that people still
frequently visit. Using his talent and skills with music, Bach shared his love for music and began to make a
name for himself. Bach was born Eisenach, Germany, on March 31, 1685. He came from a multi generation
family of musicians. Elizabeth Lämmerhirt Bach was his mother s name and his father, Johann Ambrosius
Bach, was a church organist and taught young Bach how to play the violin. At age ten, after his mother and
father died, Johann moved to Ohrdruf, Germany and received his first lesson on the keyboard from his brother

In the United States (U.S.), chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability. Chronic disease
activities are sparsely delivered in the U.S. despite the fact that 7 out of 10 deaths are caused by chronic
diseases, every year; and 75% of our health care costs 75% of health care costs are attributable to preventable
diseases.1,2 One main reason for this imbalance is that funding for chronic disease prevention activities is
limited. In fact, only 3% of the U.S. total health expenditure is devoted to public health.3 The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, the leading federal agency for public health spends an estimated 70% of its
budget on infection disease prevention and control, with less than 10% of its spending devoted to chronic
disease prevention.4
Background
Local public health agencies can serve as effective vehicles for delivering community based chronic disease

public health laws and programs, and their relationships with diverse community stakeholders (CITATION).

It can be crucial all the same. Both Africa and America have many differences there are many things they have

Just as the American schooling system mostly education was available to mostly white cultures. African school
were segregated just as well as the American culture in the past. The apartheid was a system of racial
segregation and discrimination in South Africa between 1948 and 1991. South Africans were broken down into
one of four racial groups based on appearance, known ancestry, socioeconomic status, and cultural lifestyle:
Black, White, Colored and Indian. Places of residence and educational facilities were determined by racial
classification. America had dealt with these same issues in the mid 1800 s Southern Blacks wanted public
schools for their children but they did not demand racially integrated schools. Legal segregation of schools did
not come to an end until the U.S. Supreme Court made the decision after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
Women seem to take be more successful in both countries as well. Word Press states: Although African
Americans have made great progress in the past 30 years in their quest for equality, a significant gender gap in
educational achievement remains. Black females have made much greater progress in academic attainment
when compared to black males. Several statistics illustrate this fact. For example, in 2006 81% of black
females graduated high school compared to 72% of black males. Whereas here in America the averages of male

18. The Emperor s New Clothes
Hans Christian Anderson displays insight into the vanity of man in the popular children s story, The Emperor s
New Clothes . Although born into the world as unique individuals, humans grow up seeking approval,
acceptance, and validation in the societal norms in which they live. Rather than embracing their individuality,
most live out their lives trying to fit into a mold that their culture deems as successful. Most cultures view
accomplishments, wealth, and positions of influence as measures of success; thus, an individual s value is
calculated by what he has externally and not by who he is internally. Therefore, many people fail to develop
their gifts, talents, and personalities to live a fulfilling life for themselves, and they succumb to societal
pressure to strive for the materialistic, external trappings of success. This presents a struggle between self and
society. In The Emperor s New Clothes , Anderson uses clothing to symbolize this struggle wearing society s
accepted standards as clothes to mask our naked vulnerability to rejection. Anderson s story centers on an
emperor whose validation comes from his wardrobe. This fondness for beautiful clothes leaves him vulnerable
to a couple of swindlers who come to his town; these con artists claimed to be weavers of an extraordinary
cloth that is invisible to anyone who was unfit for his office or unforgiveable stupid (The Emperor s New

news among congressmen and from state to state. Fluoride is a compound of chemicals that are used to help
prevent tooth decay, and can prevent loss of important minerals from the tooth enamel. Many Americans
consume fluoride through which can be found in water, soft drinks, and juice. Water fluoridation has been
around since the 1940 s, when it was commonly known to be in everyone s drinking water. There are four
different ways to get fluoride: have a dentist apply it, take fluoride tablets, using tooth paste with fluoride, and
drinking water with fluoride in it. When fluoride is applied it will help reduce cavities and help your teeth be

The history of fluoride dates back to the 1940 s when an experiment was conducted in four major cities in the
United States to see if water fluoridation would help the communities with dental cavities. This study states
that Over a ten year period of fluoridation, the incidence of cavities in each city was cut in half. The beneficial
effect of fluoride was not dependent on the source of the fluoride (Fallon 2006 pg. 2). The benefits of fluoride
are great because if a person takes in some fluoride over a period of time there will be less cavities and he/she
will have stronger teeth. Arkansas Dental Hygiene Association states, Community water fluoridation is an
effective, safe, and inexpensive way to prevent tooth decay. Fluoridation benefits Americans of all ages and
socioeconomic status. It has been proven that the use of fluoride dental products can effectively prevent tooth

20. Personal Responsibility Work And Opportunity Act Analysis
The Personal Responsibility Work and Opportunity Act was a bill that was passed into law in 1996. This law
created a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). The changes in the TANF
program were significantly different than the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. The
TANF program became a part of the national welfare reform which puts a stop to women with children being
entitled to an endless amount of cash benefits. Welfare reform was part of President Bill Clinton and his
campaign s promise to end welfare as we know it (Gilbert and Terrell 2013 p.74). The sponsor of this bill was a
Republican representative for Ohio s 12th Congressional district and his name was John Kasich

21. Debeers s Diamond Dilemm A Case Study
DeBeers s Diamond Dilemma: A Case Study
Introduction
The DeBeers s group of companies is a leading diamond exploration, mining, retail and trading company that
was founded in 1888. The organization has its headquarters in Luxembourg and has mining agreements in close
to 30 countries inclusive of the world s leading diamond producers such as South Africa, Botswana, Canada
and Namibia (Cadieux, 2005). The company enjoys one of the leading market shares in the natural diamond
industry with a current share of around 40%. However, this is a noted decline from past decades where it
controlled up to 80% of the world s diamond supply by the 1990s. The decline noted in its apparent monopoly
was caused by a number of factors including the rise of new suppliers outside of its control. Additionally,
negative press threatened its reputation as it was accused of unfair monopolistic and anti competitive practices,
price fixing and even dabbling in the supply and distribution of the controversial blood diamonds.
A more significant threat for the company has been the rise of the synthetic diamond market where essentially
real diamonds are manufactured within plants and don t have to undergo millions of years of formation
underground in addition to grueling extraction processes. These diamonds possess a lot of quality while being
sold at a fraction of the prices of natural diamonds and have seen a rise in demand and in the total diamond
market share. While DeBeers has played down the

22. Justice Of God By Ayatullah Naser Makarer
Within Justice of God by Ayatullah Naser Makarer Shirazi, the Justice of God is analyzed through many
subtopics of philosophies which all connect back to Allah s attribute of being Adl or Just. Justice has two
meanings that differ throughout the span of the book. The first one is to put everything in its place which in
other words means to balance and create symmetry between everything. The second definition is following
individual rights which means everyone deserves to be treated equally and the opposite of that would be to take
away their rights and only allow a sole group those rights. Now the significance of God s Justice is neither to
remove all the rights or give all the rights to one group that s discriminated against others. ... Show more

Their are many sources of oppression and how it starts. These include ignorance, need, inability, and
selfishness. Sometimes the oppressor is ignorant of what he is doing and in truth does not know what they are
doing. Another one is that if the oppressor has to commit this act in order to attain something that someone else
has which results in oppression, but if he was self sufficient they would have no need to commit oppression.
Inability is when someone is not willing to have the rights of another taken but can t do anything about it, so he
has to commit oppression. Selfishness is when someone is bearing a grudge against a group of people like
seeking revenge so they commit oppression against that group of people. These are the many reasons why
oppression occurs within this world.
One philosophy discussed are natural calamities such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis which happen
all over the world and are used to prove that Gods s Justice did not exist. They also used natural disasters to
prove that God doesn t exist. Another philosophy which is examined in this publication is the difficulties faced
in life and how the justice of God justifies them. For example, war is terrible and tears apart lives but
sometimes a difficult and long war causes a nation to blossom and become united due to that difficulty. If we
analyze the lives of the most successful people in this world, behind them we will see many failures

23. Pride In Creon InAntigone, By Sophocles
There is room for improvement in everything. It is inevitable that everything has flaws: sports teams, acting
crews, bands, among many other things are always capable of improvement. A sports team could be extremely
cohesive. The team could work together great, and be very talented at offense, but not at defense. Although this
team is very talented at offense, they cannot, under any circumstance, play defense. Ultimately, if the sports
team does not focus to fix this flaw, it will lead to the team s downfall and loss in the season. This principle is
relevant to anything and it s flaws. It can easily be applied to people s personalities as well. In the play
Antigone, Sophocles indirectly characterizes Creon as a very prideful man. Creon has many great aspects, but
he is also shown to posses the fatal trait of excessive pride, which eventually results in his downfall. The
downfall Creon s pride results in is his family s death, and consequently having to live with the guilt and shame
it comes with.
Creon is represented to be a very prideful leader. This can be a good trait to posses, except when it is shown to
be in an excessive manner. Pride is a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction in one s own achievements.
Though, that is the direct definition of pride, it can be used in both , a good and a bad sense. In the case of
Creon, he represents the bad connotation of being prideful. The bad meaning behind someone possessing pride
is when they have an emphasized sense of

24. Hamlet Oedipus Complex Essay
People searching for their significant other tend to be subconsciously attracted to individuals possessing
attributes similar to their parents . According to psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, this tendency stems from the
natural course of suppressing one s inherent Oedipal inclinations. The Oedipus Complex is Freud s explication
of a child s relationship with the parent of the opposite sex, it is a phase that every man experiences as a child.
This phase entails the desire to replace the father figure as he creates competition for the mother s attention.
According to Freud, in order to overcome the Oedipus, individuals must repress their desire for sexual
interaction with their mother; failure to overcome this phase results in societal chaos. In ... Show more content

Is thy union here?/ Follow my mother! (Shakespeare, 5.2.318 320)
This is when Hamlet kills Claudius with his own poison after inflicting a fatal wound with a poisoned blade,
thus ending him twice and ensuring his inevitable demise; thus allowing Hamlet to die in peace, knowing that
he avenged his father free from corrupt or ulterior motives. Throughout Shakespeare s Hamlet, Hamlet finds
excuses to delay the assassination of his uncle, Claudius. This is the result of the Oedipus complex whereby
Hamlet struggles to overcome his sexual desires for his mother. Though he strives to avenge his father s
untimely demise, he is unable to fulfill his request until after his mother dies, for he fears the inevitable
consequences of his actions. Primarily, Hamlet s Oedipal urges resurface when they are triggered by his uncle
actualizing his childhood fantasies, through the murder of his father and the incestuous courtship with his
mother. Secondly, there is a conflict in interest between Hamlet avenging his father and engaging in a sexual
relationship with his mother by the same means that his uncle took to assume the throne. Finally, Hamlet is able
to overcome his fear of succumbing to his sexual desires because of his mother s death therefore allowing him
to murder his uncle. If people do not actively work to suppress their own innate impulses, societal chaos will
ensue. Hamlet s failure to repress his Oedipal desires results in the downfall of the Danish Monarchy allowing

Due to the advancements from the Industrial Revolution, weapons were more deadly and injuries were more
severe. The Civil War had the most United States casualties than any other war, so women naturally became
highly involved in the war effort. This meant that nursing shifted from a job to a necessity during the war. The
common duties of a nurse included many tasks such as tending to patients wounds, cleaning the hospital, and
comforting soldiers (Currie 48). Many times the women were not trained beforehand and this led to many
mistakes due to inexperience and unpreparedness for the gruesome injuries and illnesses within the hospitals
(49). However, women were drawn to become nurses for many reasons including staying involved in the war
effort and a higher wage of $12 a month

In the movie Neo is asked to choose between two pills. Neo can choose the red pill, which will show him how
the world really is and the matrix, or he can choose the blue pill and he will go back to life as it was before he
met Morpheous and forget all about the matrix. I think if I had to choose between the red and blue pills I would
choose the blue pill. I would choose the blue pill because when Neo learns about the matrix and the truth about
everything he looses everything he loved about his old life. I do not think I could live in a place without any of
my family or friends, even if it is all just a fantasy. I mean when you think about it if you really know the truth
about the world/life, what can you do about it to change it? I would rather live in a happy, comfortable, and
maybe predictable life with all of my friends and family, than live in the harsh reality of the matrix where the

countless pages of documents and information became accessible to nearly everybody. The problem with
plagiarism was much smaller and easier to detect before the Internet. Preceding the Internet, plagiarized

31. Essay on Foucault Panopticism
Panopticism by Michel Focault
Works Cited Not Included
Our society is not one of spectacle, but of surveillance; under the surface of images, one invests bodies in
depth; behind the great abstraction of exchange, there continues the meticulous concrete training of useful
forces; the circuits of communication are the supports of an accumulation and a centralization of knowledge;
the play of signs defines the anchorages of power; it is not that the beautiful totality of the individual is
amputated, repressed, altered by our social order, it is rather that the individual is carefully fabricated in it,
according to a whole technique of forces and bodies. (pp.333 34)

The persons with the plague (lepers were included in this group) were always observed to account for their
presence. These people were supposed to be present at their windows for attendance. Where they not present at
the time, they were marked as dead. Their family would be removed, the house would be cleaned out,
perfumed, and then, a mere four hours later, people would move back in. Obviously, the fear of not being
observed would be strong in this situation, a direct result of the drastic measures taken once someone s
presence could not be observed. Though this fear has the opposite motivation of the healthy citizens, who,
knowing they are being watched, are afraid to do wrong, it works on the same basic principle. That if one
knows they are being watched, it remains a constant consideration in their mind, regardless of the presence of
an observer, the fear will always be present.
The Panopticon, a prison described by Foucault, is a machine for dissociating the see/being seen dyad: in the
peripheric ring, one is totally seen, without ever seeing (321, Foucault). This literally means that in the
formation of the panopticon those who are being seen can not see one another and the one who sees everything
can never be seen. That is the most important tool of the panopticon. Foucault makes this assumption about
today s society by saying that we are always being watched whether we know it or not. One always keeps an
