Chapter Summary Of The Adventures Of The Lindleys By David...
The story begins on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of summer. Neddy and Lucinda Merrill and
Helena and Donald Westerhazy are sitting around the pool complaining about their hangovers.
Cheever is describing how Neddy is feeling young and energetic and because of this he decides to
swim all the way home. His heart was high and he ran across the grass. Making a pilgrim, and
explorer, a man with a destiny, and he knew that he would find friends along the way. (Cheever 604).
He dives into the Westerhazy s pool thinking about all the pools that lie ahead and with that comes the
friends that will await him.
Neddy names his journey Lucinda after his wife. He was not a practical joker nor was he a fool but he
was determinedly original and had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He considers on going back to the Westerhazys but he cannot bring himself to end his journey early.
After finally able to cross the street Neddy finds himself at the public pool. It stank of chlorine and
looked to him like a sink (Cheever 608). Neddy was very displeased with all the rules at the public
pool. All the swimmers needed to shower, rinse their feet and wear their identification disks. He wasn
t able to swim leisurely in this pool like the others. He was forced to swim with his head up so other
swimmers did not bump into him. When he made it to the other side he made a mad dash to his next
destination, the Halloran s.
The true nature of Neddy is that he has made a habit of rejecting invitations, and as friend after friend
remarks on how long it s been since they ve seen each other. It becomes clear that he has distanced
himself from those around him. He wasn t aware of his friends illnesses or friends that have moved
away and he himself was suffering from misfortune that has cost him his wealth and family. As his
journey progresses his health and strength degrades, he becomes weaker and weaker. His willful
ignorance left him with nothing; he was left entirely alone leading to his

The Birth Of Sound Recording Technology
Since the birth of sound recording technology in the late 19th century, there have been a multitude of
advancements in the preservation of sound within a physical form, as well as immense impacts on the
way the art is heard, attained, performed, and composed, among many other aspects. Today, sound
recording technology is essential to the lifeblood of music, and offers a plethora of benefits and
options to listeners, musicians, composers, and the like. In a time before the breakthrough, hearing a
symphony or an opera was only possible through attending a live performance. Therefore the audience
s idea of a given piece of music was determined by only what they have heard performed live. It was
certainly possible to see pieces of music performed more than once, whether by the same musicians or
not, yet drawing comparisons between the different performances was likely a complicated task. Now,
we have the advantage of accessing recorded performances of an unfathomable amount of music.
From this, we can easily compare multiple performances of the same music to further refine our taste,
knowledge, and understanding of the art. To have a sound recording of a composer/musician
performing their own work is a major benefit to the music world, and of course is exclusive to the
time following the development of the technology. Sergei Rachmaninoff recorded many of his works,
in particular the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor (1901), one of his most famous compositions, with

An Extension Of White Washed Americ Black History Month
An Extension of White Washed America: Black History Month
Intro: February is arguably one of the most popular months of the year. It has the fourth most
celebrated holiday, chocolates and candies are on sale, and it honors the central role of those of
African descent in U.S. history. This month is referred to as Black History Month. One moth to
celebrate ALL of black history. To celebrate our African ancestors who were chained and thrown on
ships. To celebrate our people enslaved on the plantations of the south. Our mothers, fathers, and
grandparents who march for us just so we could go to the same schools as white men. And our
unarmed brothers and sisters who are being shot without a cause or a reason any more than because a

However, Woodson never intended the month to be in recognition of black firsts and recognized icons.
The month was intended to be a stepping stone around the hate of the era and eventually have black
history included in the teachings of American history.
Woodson s vision for this observance was to show the African American people the work ethic,
entrepreneurship, and dignity evincive of our ancestors. He also wanted to use it as a way to progress
Caucasians past vicious stereotyping. Ultimately, it was supposed to be about unity and not create a
cultural divide based on ethnocentric pride. The need for Negro History Week in 1926 and Black
History Month in 1976 was self evident. But in 2017, is it potentially harming our causes and
movements? And I am in no way saying that Black pride is harming us. It seems that what used to be a
campaign around hate is inciting hateful backlash. From Beyoncé dressing as a black panther, to a
movement to make Black Lives Matter, to electing our very first black president.
While two of those are monumental, they shouldn t be an excuse for the blatant racism recently
coming into light. A racism that spent a couple decades hiding from the public until protected by the
imaginary shield of the internet and social media. And the worst thing about this racism is that very
rarely is it the racism we have come to know. It s conditional.
It s people saying all black people ever do is whine about how poorly their

Judicial Branch Research Paper
Our judicial branch is essential in the function of our current government and to make valid the
constitutional rights of every citizen. In additional, the judicial branch has is established to make sure
there is balance of power within the executive and the legislative branches. With this in mind and
being a citizen of this country is important to know that the head of the judicial branch is a person that
is well prepared and educated to make a rightful a judgement always. Correspondingly, is important to
learn who the current Justices of the Supreme Court are and what are their qualifications. Recently,

Not only did they obtain a degree but some of them graduated with honors such as Sonia Sotomayor,

educated individuals that know the law gives confidence to the people. At the same time is important
to know that each Justices worked hard to hold a seat in the Supreme Court. In other words, their path
to Justices was not a one step road. On the contrary some had to start as law clerks before they became
Justices of the Supreme Court. In fact, John G. Roberts Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, served
as law clerk the same year he graduated from Harvard Law School (Supreme Court of the United
States). Not only did they invested time in their education but they hold positions within the system to
serve many citizens of this country. For instance, some of them served as members of the Judicial
Conference of the United States or Deputy Assistant Attorney. Although, some of them were in private

Impact Of Globalization On The World
Introduction:
Globalization is a movement that evolves over time. It heavily involves trade and business that builds
relationships with border countries and overseas. Technology is a critical part of globalization as it
involves connecting people in many ways. The number of minutes spent on cross border telephone
calls, on a per capita basis increased from 7.3 in 1991 to 28.8 in 2006 (IMF Staff, p. 271). The growth
of technology has made it possible for people to connect almost instantaneously. Snapchat, Skype, and
FaceTime allow people to have live conversations from far distances. Sharing information and ideas
allows for innovations. Many opportunities can occur from globalization such as growth in Capita,
better health care systems, advancement in technology.
Analysis:
Global trade enables different countries to share their products and resources. There is not a single
nation in the world that has all the resources to self sustain itself. Across the world, developed nations
can have the technology for innovation but lack the necessary resources. Developing nations such as
Latin American and African countries have the resources but need investment. Trade can be beneficial
to both members of the party in this instance. The WTO and WHO are organizations that helps a lot
with globalization. People can share their expertise in many different diverse settings. In times such as
war, resources in a country may run low and require other nations for assistance. Often, women

The Influence of Television on Human Behavior
The role of the television is pretty simple; to entertain. Almost everyone on this planet own one or
more television(s). The television as we used to know is no longer in black and white or just a tiny box
but it is massively upgrading with the hi tech today that s why we see only see the flat screen TVs
now. It is almost as flat as this board. With these new modern technology, the human behavior is also
rapidly changing like I previously mentioned in my first topic. The human needs and wants is
basically a major issue covering our everyday life but here I am explaining it further in a monkey see,
monkey do situation which technically means what we see is what we do or a better way is copying.
So within this situation, we often get influenced by the media. For instance, a zombie movie. What do
we see in a zombie movie? Assassinations, survival, cool gadgets, awesome stunts and cute movie
casts. So by observing the cool aspects from the movie, we would basically start picturing ourselves
doing it even worse we are actually doing it by imagining everyone on earth is a zombie and you d
want to run around chopping their heads off. This where the human behavior really takes place.
The main problem is we actually start believing in fantasies which slowly turns to reality where
people might actually think you re crazy. Remember when The Matrix was released? Yes, we would
literally see people doing slow motion acts which was fun because it was so influential that it became

Dulce Et Decorum Est Irony Essay
Wilfred Owen exhibits the intense fear of warfare through Dulce Et Decorum Est . Owen wakens the
memories of the passing of one of his allies. He had succumbed to the excruciating pain of sulfur gas
right before Owen s eyes, leaving him traumatized. Dulce Et Decorum Est is an allegory for bound, ill
fated camaraderie. Through the use of oxymora, imagery, and allusion, Owen is able demonstrate core
shaking loss. Using final words of the poem, Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, Owen makes an
allusion to Roman poet Horace s Odes. The Latin phrase translates to: it is sweet and fitting to die for
one s country. This saying becomes the centerpiece of the poem s irony. Firsthand experience with war

U.s. Practitioners And Acupuncture Practitioners
U.S. Practitioners primarily believe in physical medicine, tests, and results, not in medical treatments
that can t be measured. With the sudden appearance of acupuncture, biomedicine practitioners were
not given time to study the new healing method, and were also unconscious in what way to explain
how the new field actually worked. For that same reason, we do not see biomedicine practitioners and
acupuncture practitioners working together, in the same type of settings. One medical treatment is
commonly sided with medicine, while the other is commonly based on a more natural way of healing.
Even though it took years for acupuncture to actually become acknowledged in the Unites States, it
has become one of the most common healing methods that we see today. Pamela Tzu Kemp, who is a
Licensed Acupuncturists and herbalist in Carlsbad California, acknowledge that she does not interfere
with western medicine, she actually supports it. Many illnesses can be cured with acupuncture, but
there are certain ones that require medical attention. An example was a person with a blood clot.
Blood clots cannot be dealt with acupuncture; it can actually worsen a person s condition, making the
situation worse till the point of death. Acupuncture is meant to help the blood flow on the body, and if
a blood clot is treated using this healing method, it could eventually just transfer the blood clot into a
different location within the body. When one of her patients had this problem, she was not

Colombia Geography
Did you know that Colombia is named after Christopher Columbus? He saw the coasts of what is now
Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama in 1492. He saw the beautiful landscape, and the amazing diversity
of the wildlife and plants. Colombia has maintained these amazing qualities to this day. That is what
makes it Colombia.
There are many landforms in Colombia, each fitting into ecosystems that are intricately unique. The
Amazon river is a habitat for animals (black caimans, piranhas, giant river otters, and pink dolphins)
that are part of the surrounding Amazon rainforest ecosystem. The Colombian landscape is admittedly
in many ways like other South American countries, but is nevertheless astonishing. There are the
Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, the grassland plains, and a small area of desert. Some
interesting landforms include the Andean Highlands, the Middle Magdalena Basin, Mt. Ritacuba
Blanco, the Cumbal volcano. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Evaluating Safety Culture And Sms Implementation
Assessing Safety Culture SMS Implementation
Safety culture is defined as consisting of shared beliefs, practices and attitudes, that exist at an
establishment. Culture is the atmosphere created by those beliefs, attitudes, etc. (Middlesworth, M.,
February 19). In recent years, safety culture has become an aspect which most, if not all, companies
and organizations require in order to succeed. What is difficult is how to measure or assess the safety
culture currently present in that organization. What one can do to assess whether or not a company
promotes a positive safety culture is to look at 6 critical components: organizational commitment,
managerial involvement, employee empowerment, accountability system, communication and a
reporting system. A successful company with a positive safety culture will consist of the majority of
the aforementioned components. Without these elements, a company s safety culture will appear non
existent and even if a safety management system is utilized, it may not be enough to promote the
proper safety culture. By identifying specific characteristics of each component we will be able to
recognize how to build a positive safety culture and how to implement an effective SMS.

Organizational Commitment
An individual s drive to excel within an organization is known as organizational commitment. Most
people find their commitment driven by their affection towards their line of work (affective
commitment). As we know, in aviation,

Primordial Soup Hypothesis In The 1920 s
After researching each of the assigned hypotheses, I do not believe in any of them. I believe in the
Bible and everything in it. It was difficult at first to get over the fact that I had to research and write a
paper on things that I do not believe in. It was hard for me to stay focused on each hypothesis because
of my belief that God created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh day. I truly believe it did
not take any longer than that.
Primordial Soup Hypothesis 1,2
The Soviet Biologist Alexander Oparin created the Primordial Soup Hypothesis in the year 1920s .
The scientist claimed the origin of biomolecules came from the transformation, during the gradual
chemical evolution of molecules that contain carbon in the Primordial Soup in other words; life began
in a pond or ocean when chemicals combined and evolved into the first species on Earth. There is no
evidence found to prove this theory. Even recently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a paper dated December 20, 2012 by Ed Yong, Lane and Martin argued that hydrogen saturated
alkaline water meeting acidic oceanic water at underwater vents would produce a natural proton
gradient across thin mineral walls in rocks that are rich in catalytic iron sulfur minerals. This set up
could create the right conditions for converting carbon dioxide and hydrogen into organic carbon
containing molecules, which can then react with each other to form the building blocks of life such as
nucleotides and amino acids. The evidence used to support their theory was that deep sea thermal
vents have tiny thin walled pores that generate complex proteins and RNA by producing a proton
gradient. Recently, geologists took tests on the areas around the deep sea vents and found them to have
helpful information that would help them search into life on other planets. From what they have found
and know about these deep sea vents they believe that the origin of biomolecules started at these

Comparison Of Christmas And Hanukkah
From December 1st to the 31st there are many holidays celebrated. Christmas and Hanukkah both
play huge roles in this season. They may have many differences, but they both make us come together
as a whole and make memories that last a lifetime. It s the most wonderful time of the year! As many
people sing throughout the season. All around the world there are many who look forward to
celebrating their religion. But do we know the true meaning of Hanukkah and Christmas? Christmas is
a christian holiday that celebrates the birth of jesus. Who they believe is the son of god. God sent him
to come to serve and teach about his father and his religion. However, Hanukkah celebrates the eight
candles that stand lit on the mendora for a whole eight days. Antiochus (a king) tried to take over
Israel and force them to practice his religion. He destroyed all buildings and items that were to
practice other religions. But a group of jewish soldiers fought back and won Israel. When going
through the buildings they were shocked to see the candles on the menora still lit, and stayed lit for 8
days. They saw this as a sign of god. But, they do have things in common. Hanukkah and Christmas
involve gift giving and other unique rituals. Both bring families together, promote goodwill, ... Show

ways to display their religion. Hanukkah often uses blue and silver colors. There most common
decorations are the menorah and the star of David. One decoration that is not uncommon is a
chocolate gelt and dreidel. However, Christmas often is represented by red and green colors.
Decorations they include are green evergreen, fake snow, white colors, ornaments, tinsel, mistletoe.
But, probably the most famous decoration is a Christmas tree. With ornaments and a angle or a star on
top. One thing the holidays do have in common is they hang and string bright lights

A Clean Well-Lighted Place 1
A Clean Well Lighted Place
In the short story A Clean Well lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway the setting is very important. The
story takes place in a Spanish speaking country in a café, but more so than the actual place the time is
what makes the setting so crucial to the story. The story takes place at night Hemingway uses this in
contrast to the well lighted cafe with its artificial light. The contrast between dark and light is the main
idea of the story and it is best expressed through the setting of the story. There are many different
examples of this some are literal examples and some are more symbolic. The setting is symbolic as
well as literal. It is a place that is not safe after dark a place where some one even a soldier ... Show

After the younger waiter goes home he carries on the conversation by himself. He explains that music
isn t good that a bar isn t good that a person of dignity would not be in places such as those. A clean
well lighted café was different for him. A bar or a nightclub, where music is played, is for people who
want the night who want to stay out and be in none respectful places. The older waiter tells the
younger waiter I am of those who like to stay late at the café with all those who don t want to go to
bed. With all those who need a light for the night (Hemingway 150). People like the older waiter and
the old deaf man not only want to be out at night but they need to bee out at night because they don t
like the light or the day and the café provides a clean and respectful place for them to be. The older
waiter says, each night I am reluctant to close because there might be some one who needs the café
(Hemingway 150). The setting also becomes a safe but artificial place for people like the waiter and
the old deaf man to be. The setting in the story is dominated by the dark and the nothingness that
comes with the night. Even when the light is available the characters in the story still naturally go to
the shadows created by the tree and the artificial light in the dark. The dark is more comforting to
these people because they do not like who they are or what they have become. The setting in this story
is also a dark and unsafe environment for people who would

Responsibility In The Rich Brother By Tobias Wolff
John D. Rockefeller once said, Every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation;
every possession, a duty. Since the beginning of mankind, humans have been responsible for each
other, their family, society, world, and much more. The theme of responsibility is prominent in Tobias
Wolff s The Rich Brother, a story that revolves around two distinctive brothers, each rich in his own
way. Pete is a happily married, successful businessman, while Donald is a simple, spiritual man
searching for his soul. When Donald gets fired the farm he lives on, no one but Pete can save him
from his financial trouble. While driving back home, the brothers engage in a variety of arguments
about the past and the present, illustrating their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pete s business life compels him to be smart, materialistic, and self centered, while Donald drifted
from church to church, then joined a Pentecostal community that met somewhere in the Mission
District to sing in tongues and swap prophecies (Wolff 1). To put it differently, Donald is obsessed
with the fate of his soul and has never held a job; therefore, he does not consider himself responsible
for helping his brother or even saving the money he gives him. For example, when a man named
Webster joins the brothers later in the story, he tells them how he found a gold mine in Peru and is
selling shares. Donald irresponsibly gives Webster Pete s money without asking him, and Pete reacts
by saying, A hundred dollars. Gone. Just like that. I worked for that money, Donald. I know, I know,
Donald said. You don t know! How could you? You get money by holding out your hand (Wolff 10).
Donald s humanitarian and spiritual society negatively affects his responsibility towards his brother
whose money he gives away to Webster who might potentially be a liar. On the other hand, Pete is
more aware when encountering strangers and more careful with money because his society forces him
to be a reliable, responsible

Augustus Superstition
Suetonius describes Augustus in a negative light. At first it didn t seem that way. The Roman historian
touched on Augustus interest in Greek literature and almost a hunger to understand and respect it.
From this description it felt more like admiration for Augustus attempting to understand what he did
not. Yet Suetonius then goes to discuss Augustus sensitivity and immense superstition. More time was
spent detailing his fears and strange behavior than depicting his interests in another culture. It almost
seemed as though Suetonius was mocking Augustus, showcasing someone that was interested in
everything Hellenistic yet who was also afraid to go out on certain days of the week. If his shoes were
put on in the wrong way in the morning, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But considering that Suetonius is a Roman historian, I believe that is safe to assume that it cannot be
trusted. The Greeks and Romans at the time had tension from past wars and disagreements. In Rome,
Greek wasn t a first language, if it had been Augustus would ve known it. For if he had occasion to use
the language, he wrote what he had to say in Latin and gave it to someone else to translate (Suetonius
89). This seems to prove that the first language learned by the Romans was Latin not Greek, meaning
that Greek culture came second to Roman culture. Greek culture wasn t a priority. So when
considering whether these accounts are real, it s debatable for two reasons. One, the accounts may be
real in the sense that Suetonius is depicting through his own narrative how Romans view anyone who
is interested in Greek culture. They might seem simple minded and fickle, the way that he seems to
describe Augustus. The second reason being that these events could be untrue; Augustus could have
had a few small superstitions that Suetonius merely exaggerated because of his potential disapproval
of his interest in Greek culture. This would mean that August was curious about Greek culture and the
world around him but it was presented to us in a negative way. Personally, because the examples of
Augustus worries seemed to be exaggerated, coupled with Suetonius being a Roman historian, I do not
trust his account of Augustus completely. I believe that Augustus was curious but not too curious for
his own

Personal Note On Chinese New Year
I was back home in China celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year with my parents for the first time in 5

Since adults believed firing fireworks would bring good fortunes to the new year, the sky would be
covered with fireworks during the night before Lunar New Year. My dad was a firm believer of such a
superstition and enthusiastically joined the firework party every year. The day before Lunar New Year,
my dad would take me on a trip looking for new fireworks. We always picked the biggest one we
could find on the market. As the clock approached 12 pm, the firework party started. The silence of
the night would be interrupted by the first sound of fireworks. Following the first sound of firework,
thousands of fireworks shot up the sky and exploded into many colorful, beautiful patterns. My and I
would also light up our firework to join the party. As a kid, the sight was as splendid as it could ever

myself ready to light our fireworks. My dad looked at me curiously, and asked: Where are you going?

The Death Of Artemio Cruz
The Death of Artemio Cruz is a novel written in 1962 by Carlos Fuentes chronicling the singular life
and destiny of a man raised in the lower classes of Mexico, who manages to rise into political and
economical power through intrigue and Manichean maneuverings. The following book critique will
contain a summary of the novel and provide some examples and parallels on core course concepts
evident in the story, hopefully demonstrating what learning was obtained using the lens of global
health matters. Some of my personal musings and reflections will be included in the paper, and
provide food for thought, reflections on universal problems commonly known if not shared by us all.
Book Summary Beginning with his participation in the Mexican Revolutionary War as a young soldier
embracing Marxist ideals bent on overthrowing the established, corrupt political structure in place,
The Death of Artemio Cruz details the gradual rise in political and economical influence of our
character in the aftermath of a successful revolution. The main plot underlines a striking contradiction,
as the protagonist eventually espouses principles he has long eschewed, becoming the exploiter
instead of the champion of the downtrodden, betraying the principles he had fought so long and hard
for. The narrative begins while he lies helplessly on his deathbed, in the throes of drug and disease
induced delirium, and through a series of flashbacks features his somewhat addled reminiscences of a

Almost everyone wants to own their own pets, but not everyone goes the right way to own one.
Millions of pets around the world in shelters are being put down due to no one wanting to adopt them.
Over the years, adoption has been promoted as a better option instead of buying pets, nevertheless,
people still buys over adoption. The reason is probably because people do not the benefits of adoption
and the harm it causes to buying pets.
Sheltered animals are those who have been either abandoned or abused. In some shelters, pets have a
time limit on their life and they get euthanized when they do not get adopted in a specific time frame.
The reason for euthanizing the animals was because space issues. This issue could easily be solved by
adoption.

citadels were very popular during that era. While forts were being used accommodation, citadels were
commonly used as a defensive structure used in more urban or densely populated areas and was
associated specifically with a powerful leader. The lower classes lived in houses built with perishable
materials such as palm frond and woven palm mat while the higher classes lived in stone, mud brick
and coral houses built by professional builders. [1]
Figure 1 shows a typical house in a village built using woven palm mats, mostly inhabited by lower
class families [2]
Another factor that affected the traditional architecture of Abu Dhabi was the climate. Because of its
arid climate, one of the solutions was to build wind towers, which is a concave V shape to deflect
wind down to cool the spaces below it. Buildings were also built close to each other, with narrow
alleys between them, called the sikkas. These rely on the northern winds to flow freely and into spaces
to ensure ventilation. These two systems would work together, the wind tower catching

White Nationalism Is Un-American
White Nationalism Is Un American
White nationalism is an umbrella term to describe the ideology that calls for the creation of an all
white ethnostate in America. Mainly, this is to be achieved by the deportation and genocides of non
whites. White nationalists claim that the white genocide, or the cultural dilution of Americans of
European descent, is occurring to the detriment of this country, by allowing immigration from other
parts of the world the United States is only weakening it s economy and degridating the moral fabric
of its society. Despite nativist claims that they are real Americans, the ideology of white nationalists
cannot be called American due to its anti American roots in philosophies that opposes the ideals of this

Chinatown Of San Francisco
Chinatown of San Francisco
There are many Chinatown in this world, and the Chinatown of San Francisco has much historical
significance; The Chinatown of San Francisco is the largest Chinatown in the United States, the
largest community of Chinese Americans outside of China. Today I want to write about the of San
Francisco base on my personal experience because there are many historic things I can illustrate.
Before I started traveling this field trip, I did some researches carefully in San Francisco city guide, so
I eager to travel as soon as possible. Finally I attended a free tour with San Francisco city guide, also
they assigned a tour guide, Marann.
There was a Mid Autumn parade in Chinatown on that day, accompanying the dragon and lion
dancing, Marann started to give us illustration about Chinatown. Because It is hard to get a parking lot
in Chinatown, and the people who live in Chinatown celebrated Mid Autumn Day, so I decided to take
BART to go there. Before I met our tour guide, I went across to Union Square and passed a tunnel.
The one side of the tunnel is to connect the western world, like Union Square, and the another side of
the tunnel is to connect to the orient world, Chinatown. Finally I walked to inside Portsmouth Square
Park, park level, and then I saw our tour guide, Manuel Maranan who took us to Chinatown. That s a
very big park, and it s close to Hilton hotel, there was a China s nation flag, also there was a Taiwan s
flag. Many Chinese visitors

The Cellist Of Sarajevo Character Analysis
Revitalization Through Beauty The world refuses to do anything other than overlook the disruption of
beauty in our life. In that, the importance of beauty would be much lesser without tragedy for
comparison, for that beauty is only used to distract the world from what truly is happening beyond the
safety for our home. In the novel The Cellist Of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway the idea of beauty is
given to us through the melody played by the cellist in an area where a mortar fell and killed 22
innocent people. With that in sight, he brought sentience and tranquility through music all while
surrounded by death and destruction. In the midst of tragedy, the author used the music played by the
cellist to show how the character Arrow is affected and how the ruins of life and broken dreams can be
again be restored by a sense of hope and revitalization. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For Arrow, this also happened but in a different fashion. She locked her old self away to protect
herself from the barbarity war. The comforting sound of the cellist playing Albinoni s Adagio brings
Arrow back to a simpler time, a time when she didn t have to live with a rifle slung over her shoulder.
Her mother is lifting her up, spinning her around and laughing. The warm tongue of a dog licks her
arm. (p.75) In this excerpt, it shows how the music sent her back, deep into her subconscious to the
girl she once was. The music from the cellist reminded her of who she really is underneath the rigid
exterior a happy, careless young

Concentration Camp Dachau Research Paper
Throughout our country s history, there have been very few generations that have been alive during a
time in which our country is not at war. One of the most common wars the United States was a part of
was World War II. This war was fought from 1939 until 1945, regarding the acts of certain countries
such as Germany, Italy, and Japan. These countries were violating human rights by placing innocent
individuals, that they considered to be weak, into concentration camps. Humans of today s society
should be required to learn about the conditions of concentration camps, the treatment towards the
prisoners in concentration camps, and the aftermath of concentration camps, to prevent the history
from repeating itself. Leading up to World War II, the Nazi party ... Show more content on

It was liberated during a time in which the allies were ahead of the axis in the war. The US Seventh
Army s 45th Division liberated Dachau. A few days before Dachau was liberated, the SS forced seven
thousand of the prisoners of Dachau to the front of the camp. They forced them on a death march from
Dachau to Tegernsee on April 27th, 1945. The next day, most of the SS officials abandoned the camp.
On April 29th, Dachau was liberated after a small battle between the US and the remaining SS
officials. One of the individuals that helped liberate Dachau described his arrival into the camp as
Incinerators were used to cremate victims partly to reduce the need for burial but also in an attempt to
hide the evidence of mass murder and camp atrocities. At Dachau, American troops arrived to find
dead bodies still piled around the camp awaiting cremation or burial ( Dachau ). This shows how
poorly the prisoners were treated because they didn t even have the privilege of being buried, they
were just thrown into a pile of dead bodies. In the camp, after liberation, there were over thirty
thousand survivors. Americans found over thirty railroad cars full of dead bodies near the

A Raisin in the Sun Comparison to Martin Luther King Jr.
Common Dreams A dream is to envision another life or characteristic that could be better or worse
than what the person already has. In the case of most people it is a dream that is positive. People
mainly are selfish dreamers who dream only about themselves but there are some who dream about
the world or others such as friends and family. Two examples of these types of dreamers are Mama
from the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Martin Luther King Jr. s speech I Have a
Dream . In Dr. King s speech he brings up that his dream is not only for him but for others with the
same problem. He is a caring dreamer, one who believes others come first then himself. Mama is also
a dreamer of this sort. Her dreams are for her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two people can be related in a way because they both dream of others living amongst whites
and to live in a place where the living conditions are better, where a plant can survive. There are other
similarities between Mama and Martin Luther King Jr., for example another similarity would be
sacrifice. Martin Luther King Jr. technically did sacrifice his life. To talk about freedom of blacks in a
time where blacks are highly hated is something risky and may take their life. He sacrificed his life
because he has four kids that he wants to grow up in an equal society. He stated, I have a dream that
my four little children will one day live a nation where they will not be judged . He is sacrificing for
the benefit of others. In this case he is sacrificing for his family and all blacks out there who wouldn t
speak up. Martin Luther King Junior is easily related to Mama because she also is sacrificing for the
benefit of family. Mama sacrifices the money that she received from the death of her husband for the
life of her loved ones. Mama sacrifices the money for Beneatha s college fund for her to pursue her
career of being a doctor. She also sacrifices her money for a house for everyone but mainly Travis, her
grandson who sleeps on a couch with plastic coverings, so that he may have a proper bed. She says,
Son I just tried to find the nicest place for the least amount of money for my family . In this

Border Law Evasion
I enjoyed reading your post and you make some great points. From all of the news media reports, and
reading informative documents it appears that the borders are more secure today than ever before.
According to Andreas border law evasion is as old as border law enforcement, and policing these
border crossings has been elevated from the status of low politics to high politics (2009, 3). I believe
illegal entry into the country has been slowed with the new advancement in technology and the
addition of the Nation Guard backing the patrol officers. With the addition of aerial surveillance assets
allows the Nation Guard to better support DHS by shifting surveillance from fixed sites to mobile

U.s. Army Tactical Mobility Requirements Board Essay
1. In 1961, Secretary of Defence Robert S. McNamara sent a strongly worded memo to Army
Secretary Elvis J. Stahr. He ordered the Army, through the Chief of Staff of the Army, to implement air
mobility. This proved to be the birthright of the airmobile division and the eventual evolution of a new
doctrine of air combat.
2. The Howze Board, formally called the U.S. Army Tactical Mobility Requirements Board, was
formed a week after the above memo from the Secretary of Defence and was headed by Lieutenant
General Hamilton H. Howze.
3. The Howze Board was in operation from May through August 1962.
4. The main purpose of the board was to free the ground soldiers from the restrictions of battlefield
movement by replacing conventional ground transportation with aircraft.
5. The board came up with a proposal that consisted of what was referred to as an Army Reorganized
Airmobile Division (RAID), coupled with a corps task force, which resembled a small mobile field
army and was supported by a special support brigade.
6. Their recommended divisional organization was that the Army would form only two airmobile
divisions: the 1st Cavalry (Airmobile), an outgrowth of the 11th Air Assault Division in July 1965.
7. The second airmobile division, 101st Airborne Division was formed three years later.
8. July 1965, the 11th Air Assault Division was designated the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).
9. Personnel and equipment from the inactivated 2d Infantry Division and the 11th Air Assault

Essay On Codependency
Codependency is defined by Wikipedia as a type of dysfunctional helping relationship where one
person supports or enables another person s drug addiction, alcoholism, gambling addiction, poor
mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or underachievement. In most cases people understand that
it s a need to be dependent or the cause of one s problem. The cause can be anything stressful,
inherited, or even just not being satisfied with life. Catching the symptoms of someone under this
condition is something that is key to helping anyone or preventing them from returning to that state of
mind. Understanding the key causes that results with negative effects is key to helping individuals
return to a healthy life styles. Stress is a key contributor for individuals to become codependent
people, especially when it results out of a dysfunctional or even over loving feeling. According to the
Recovery Ranch based on relationship dynamics one can put their own needs aside to accommodate or
please others to avoid conflict, rejection, an abandonment. With this just based on the relationship

Essay on What Is Really Behind Advertisement
Many people are in the debate whether companies use persuasion or manipulation in their
advertisements to get people to buy a certain product. In the Innocent ones advertisement the Stop the
Abuse organization shows a picture of a sad, abused little boy. The advertisement only shows half of
his face, but the color in his face has been lightened so it has a gray tint. To the right, where the other
half of his face should be, there is a stop sign. The stop sign is bright red, and below the stop sign are
big bolded words that read, I am Not a punching bag. The word not is underlined to bring the
significance of the advertisement to end child abuse. The advertisement is placed a a pitch black
background to the picture stand out more. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And then there are some people who look at it and their heart will break and they will donate
immediately. The picture can only be counted as unfair if it invoked the same emotion in everyone no
matter who viewed it. Another reason the advertisement is not manipulative is because even though
the way the advertisement was structured was skillful, it was more on the creative side. The creativity
is shown by the content of the advertisement. With the use of a stop sign to replace half of a child s
face, big bolded words, color scheme, and half of a child s face the company used creativity in
designing the advertisement. The only skill that was used was the structure of the advertisement. With
the child s face to the left, the stop sign to the right, and the bolded words underneath the stop sign it
made the advertisement very easy to follow. However, that was the only skill used in the
advertisement which is why it was more creative than skillful. The advertisement that the Stop The
Abuse organization has recently came out with is persuasive and not manipulative because even
though the advertisement is sad and may touch the emotions of some people, the fact of the matter is
that it is only an advertisement and it is strictly the person s, who is watching the advertisement,
choice on whether to donate to the advertisement. The whole purpose of why the organization used the
advertisement is in an attempt

The Appropriateness Of A Mean Variance Simulation Model...
The appropriateness of a Mean Variance Simulation Model for a
Commonwealth public sector defined pension benefit fund
Kevin Lian
October 20, 2014
In this section, we will examine the use of a mean variance simulation model on a commonwealth
public section defined pension benefit fund. Firstly, we will examine the expected medium term
returns using the reverse optimisation approach and discuss whether any adjustments are necessary.
Secondly, we will examine how appropriate the model is for the fund. Lastly, we will discuss how to
determine any inconsistencies if a mean variance model is used.

structure of the M V model. This exposes our results to a potentially unbounded error size.
Thus, we suggest a Bayesian adjustment is needed to reflect our uncertainty about our assumptions.

Furthermore, the results in Table 1 also requires some adjustments due to tax and the inherent
assumptions of the reverse optimisation approach. In general, the returns of each asset class need to be
subjected to the appropriate tax deductions and transaction fees. In particular, Australian equity returns
have not accounted for the franking credits. In addition, the method used to calculate the risk aversion
coefficient result in time invariant equity returns. Thus, adjustments are needed to reflect time vary
equity risk premiums. In

The Mesozoic Era
Introduction
The Mesozoic Era began around 250 million years ago and ended 65 million years ago. It is divided
into three different periods, The Triassic, The Jurassic and The Cretaceous. In the Mesozoic Era Earth
was extraordinaly different from what it is now. The climate was humid and tropical, the sea levels
were constantly changing and even the shape of the Earth s continents were different (Benson et al,
2010). The land was dominant by the dinosaurs but the oceans were populated by more rich and
diverse marine reptiles. There were more than a dozen different groups of marine reptiles in the
Mesozoic era, these groups contained pelagic and coastal predators and coastal herbivores. The three
main predators of the oceans were the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the Late Triassic period they reached their highest diversity, they became more advanced and
specalized, making them one of the top Marine predators. Ichthyosaurs over time evolved to have
streamlined, fish shaped bodies and large heads. They also evolved to have thicker bodies and a
thicker backbone which meant they swam more with a convergent motion (Callway, 1997). They had
the largest eyeballs (up to 264mm in diameter), of all vertebrates which were supported by a ring of
sclerotic bones, these eyes were adapted to help them find prey in low light environments (Motani,
2009). Ichthyosaurus also had large ear bones, scientists believe this was an adaptation that allowed
them to locate their prey by listening for their arrival through the water . This adapation was also a
useful way for them to listen for predators that may be approaching (Fisher et al, 2016). The most
distinguishable feature of their body plan was the presence of the caudal fin and the dorsal fin which
was formed of stiff tissue, not bone. The first whole fossil of an Ichytosaur was discovered 200 years
ago by Mary Anning on the Jurassic coast of Dorset at Lyme Regis. Mary Annnings brother, Joseph
found the skull of an Ichthyosaur in 1811 between the cliffs at Lyme Regis and Charmouth but failed
to find the rest of it. Mary went out found the remainings of this fossil a year later, she found the rest
of the fossil at Lyme Regis. This fossils skull was around 1 meters long and the whole

  • 2. Chapter Summary Of The Adventures Of The Lindleys By David... The story begins on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of summer. Neddy and Lucinda Merrill and Helena and Donald Westerhazy are sitting around the pool complaining about their hangovers. Cheever is describing how Neddy is feeling young and energetic and because of this he decides to swim all the way home. His heart was high and he ran across the grass. Making a pilgrim, and explorer, a man with a destiny, and he knew that he would find friends along the way. (Cheever 604). He dives into the Westerhazy s pool thinking about all the pools that lie ahead and with that comes the friends that will await him. Neddy names his journey Lucinda after his wife. He was not a practical joker nor was he a fool but he was determinedly original and had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He considers on going back to the Westerhazys but he cannot bring himself to end his journey early. After finally able to cross the street Neddy finds himself at the public pool. It stank of chlorine and looked to him like a sink (Cheever 608). Neddy was very displeased with all the rules at the public pool. All the swimmers needed to shower, rinse their feet and wear their identification disks. He wasn t able to swim leisurely in this pool like the others. He was forced to swim with his head up so other swimmers did not bump into him. When he made it to the other side he made a mad dash to his next destination, the Halloran s. The true nature of Neddy is that he has made a habit of rejecting invitations, and as friend after friend remarks on how long it s been since they ve seen each other. It becomes clear that he has distanced himself from those around him. He wasn t aware of his friends illnesses or friends that have moved away and he himself was suffering from misfortune that has cost him his wealth and family. As his journey progresses his health and strength degrades, he becomes weaker and weaker. His willful ignorance left him with nothing; he was left entirely alone leading to his ... • 3. The Birth Of Sound Recording Technology Since the birth of sound recording technology in the late 19th century, there have been a multitude of advancements in the preservation of sound within a physical form, as well as immense impacts on the way the art is heard, attained, performed, and composed, among many other aspects. Today, sound recording technology is essential to the lifeblood of music, and offers a plethora of benefits and options to listeners, musicians, composers, and the like. In a time before the breakthrough, hearing a symphony or an opera was only possible through attending a live performance. Therefore the audience s idea of a given piece of music was determined by only what they have heard performed live. It was certainly possible to see pieces of music performed more than once, whether by the same musicians or not, yet drawing comparisons between the different performances was likely a complicated task. Now, we have the advantage of accessing recorded performances of an unfathomable amount of music. From this, we can easily compare multiple performances of the same music to further refine our taste, knowledge, and understanding of the art. To have a sound recording of a composer/musician performing their own work is a major benefit to the music world, and of course is exclusive to the time following the development of the technology. Sergei Rachmaninoff recorded many of his works, in particular the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor (1901), one of his most famous compositions, with The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. An Extension Of White Washed Americ Black History Month An Extension of White Washed America: Black History Month Intro: February is arguably one of the most popular months of the year. It has the fourth most celebrated holiday, chocolates and candies are on sale, and it honors the central role of those of African descent in U.S. history. This month is referred to as Black History Month. One moth to celebrate ALL of black history. To celebrate our African ancestors who were chained and thrown on ships. To celebrate our people enslaved on the plantations of the south. Our mothers, fathers, and grandparents who march for us just so we could go to the same schools as white men. And our unarmed brothers and sisters who are being shot without a cause or a reason any more than because a white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Woodson never intended the month to be in recognition of black firsts and recognized icons. The month was intended to be a stepping stone around the hate of the era and eventually have black history included in the teachings of American history. Woodson s vision for this observance was to show the African American people the work ethic, entrepreneurship, and dignity evincive of our ancestors. He also wanted to use it as a way to progress Caucasians past vicious stereotyping. Ultimately, it was supposed to be about unity and not create a cultural divide based on ethnocentric pride. The need for Negro History Week in 1926 and Black History Month in 1976 was self evident. But in 2017, is it potentially harming our causes and movements? And I am in no way saying that Black pride is harming us. It seems that what used to be a campaign around hate is inciting hateful backlash. From Beyoncé dressing as a black panther, to a movement to make Black Lives Matter, to electing our very first black president. While two of those are monumental, they shouldn t be an excuse for the blatant racism recently coming into light. A racism that spent a couple decades hiding from the public until protected by the imaginary shield of the internet and social media. And the worst thing about this racism is that very rarely is it the racism we have come to know. It s conditional. It s people saying all black people ever do is whine about how poorly their ... • 6. Impact Of Globalization On The World Introduction: Globalization is a movement that evolves over time. It heavily involves trade and business that builds relationships with border countries and overseas. Technology is a critical part of globalization as it involves connecting people in many ways. The number of minutes spent on cross border telephone calls, on a per capita basis increased from 7.3 in 1991 to 28.8 in 2006 (IMF Staff, p. 271). The growth of technology has made it possible for people to connect almost instantaneously. Snapchat, Skype, and FaceTime allow people to have live conversations from far distances. Sharing information and ideas allows for innovations. Many opportunities can occur from globalization such as growth in Capita, better health care systems, advancement in technology. Analysis: Global trade enables different countries to share their products and resources. There is not a single nation in the world that has all the resources to self sustain itself. Across the world, developed nations can have the technology for innovation but lack the necessary resources. Developing nations such as Latin American and African countries have the resources but need investment. Trade can be beneficial to both members of the party in this instance. The WTO and WHO are organizations that helps a lot with globalization. People can share their expertise in many different diverse settings. In times such as war, resources in a country may run low and require other nations for assistance. Often, women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Influence of Television on Human Behavior The role of the television is pretty simple; to entertain. Almost everyone on this planet own one or more television(s). The television as we used to know is no longer in black and white or just a tiny box but it is massively upgrading with the hi tech today that s why we see only see the flat screen TVs now. It is almost as flat as this board. With these new modern technology, the human behavior is also rapidly changing like I previously mentioned in my first topic. The human needs and wants is basically a major issue covering our everyday life but here I am explaining it further in a monkey see, monkey do situation which technically means what we see is what we do or a better way is copying. So within this situation, we often get influenced by the media. For instance, a zombie movie. What do we see in a zombie movie? Assassinations, survival, cool gadgets, awesome stunts and cute movie casts. So by observing the cool aspects from the movie, we would basically start picturing ourselves doing it even worse we are actually doing it by imagining everyone on earth is a zombie and you d want to run around chopping their heads off. This where the human behavior really takes place. The main problem is we actually start believing in fantasies which slowly turns to reality where people might actually think you re crazy. Remember when The Matrix was released? Yes, we would literally see people doing slow motion acts which was fun because it was so influential that it became a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Dulce Et Decorum Est Irony Essay Wilfred Owen exhibits the intense fear of warfare through Dulce Et Decorum Est . Owen wakens the memories of the passing of one of his allies. He had succumbed to the excruciating pain of sulfur gas right before Owen s eyes, leaving him traumatized. Dulce Et Decorum Est is an allegory for bound, ill fated camaraderie. Through the use of oxymora, imagery, and allusion, Owen is able demonstrate core shaking loss. Using final words of the poem, Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, Owen makes an allusion to Roman poet Horace s Odes. The Latin phrase translates to: it is sweet and fitting to die for one s country. This saying becomes the centerpiece of the poem s irony. Firsthand experience with war is not sweet nor fitting, here it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. U.s. Practitioners And Acupuncture Practitioners U.S. Practitioners primarily believe in physical medicine, tests, and results, not in medical treatments that can t be measured. With the sudden appearance of acupuncture, biomedicine practitioners were not given time to study the new healing method, and were also unconscious in what way to explain how the new field actually worked. For that same reason, we do not see biomedicine practitioners and acupuncture practitioners working together, in the same type of settings. One medical treatment is commonly sided with medicine, while the other is commonly based on a more natural way of healing. Even though it took years for acupuncture to actually become acknowledged in the Unites States, it has become one of the most common healing methods that we see today. Pamela Tzu Kemp, who is a Licensed Acupuncturists and herbalist in Carlsbad California, acknowledge that she does not interfere with western medicine, she actually supports it. Many illnesses can be cured with acupuncture, but there are certain ones that require medical attention. An example was a person with a blood clot. Blood clots cannot be dealt with acupuncture; it can actually worsen a person s condition, making the situation worse till the point of death. Acupuncture is meant to help the blood flow on the body, and if a blood clot is treated using this healing method, it could eventually just transfer the blood clot into a different location within the body. • 10. Colombia Geography Did you know that Colombia is named after Christopher Columbus? He saw the coasts of what is now Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama in 1492. He saw the beautiful landscape, and the amazing diversity of the wildlife and plants. Colombia has maintained these amazing qualities to this day. That is what makes it Colombia. There are many landforms in Colombia, each fitting into ecosystems that are intricately unique. The Amazon river is a habitat for animals (black caimans, piranhas, giant river otters, and pink dolphins) that are part of the surrounding Amazon rainforest ecosystem. The Colombian landscape is admittedly in many ways like other South American countries, but is nevertheless astonishing. • 12. Evaluating Safety Culture And Sms Implementation Assessing Safety Culture SMS Implementation Safety culture is defined as consisting of shared beliefs, practices and attitudes, that exist at an establishment. Culture is the atmosphere created by those beliefs, attitudes, etc. (Middlesworth, M., February 19). In recent years, safety culture has become an aspect which most, if not all, companies and organizations require in order to succeed. What is difficult is how to measure or assess the safety culture currently present in that organization. What one can do to assess whether or not a company promotes a positive safety culture is to look at 6 critical components: organizational commitment, managerial involvement, employee empowerment, accountability system, communication and a reporting system. A successful company with a positive safety culture will consist of the majority of the aforementioned components. Without these elements, a company s safety culture will appear non existent and even if a safety management system is utilized, it may not be enough to promote the proper safety culture. By identifying specific characteristics of each component we will be able to recognize how to build a positive safety culture and how to implement an effective SMS. Discussion Organizational Commitment An individual s drive to excel within an organization is known as organizational commitment. Most people find their commitment driven by their affection towards their line of work (affective commitment). As we know, in aviation, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Primordial Soup Hypothesis In The 1920 s After researching each of the assigned hypotheses, I do not believe in any of them. I believe in the Bible and everything in it. It was difficult at first to get over the fact that I had to research and write a paper on things that I do not believe in. It was hard for me to stay focused on each hypothesis because of my belief that God created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh day. I truly believe it did not take any longer than that. Primordial Soup Hypothesis 1,2 The Soviet Biologist Alexander Oparin created the Primordial Soup Hypothesis in the year 1920s . The scientist claimed the origin of biomolecules came from the transformation, during the gradual chemical evolution of molecules that contain carbon in the Primordial Soup in other words; life began in a pond or ocean when chemicals combined and evolved into the first species on Earth. In a paper dated December 20, 2012 by Ed Yong, Lane and Martin argued that hydrogen saturated alkaline water meeting acidic oceanic water at underwater vents would produce a natural proton gradient across thin mineral walls in rocks that are rich in catalytic iron sulfur minerals. This set up could create the right conditions for converting carbon dioxide and hydrogen into organic carbon containing molecules, which can then react with each other to form the building blocks of life such as nucleotides and amino acids. The evidence used to support their theory was that deep sea thermal vents have tiny thin walled pores that generate complex proteins and RNA by producing a proton gradient. Recently, geologists took tests on the areas around the deep sea vents and found them to have helpful information that would help them search into life on other planets. They may have many differences, but they both make us come together as a whole and make memories that last a lifetime. It s the most wonderful time of the year! As many people sing throughout the season. All around the world there are many who look forward to celebrating their religion. But do we know the true meaning of Hanukkah and Christmas? Christmas is a christian holiday that celebrates the birth of jesus. Who they believe is the son of god. God sent him to come to serve and teach about his father and his religion. However, Hanukkah celebrates the eight candles that stand lit on the mendora for a whole eight days. Antiochus (a king) tried to take over Israel and force them to practice his religion. He destroyed all buildings and items that were to practice other religions. But a group of jewish soldiers fought back and won Israel. When going through the buildings they were shocked to see the candles on the menora still lit, and stayed lit for 8 days. They saw this as a sign of god. But, they do have things in common. The story takes place in a Spanish speaking country in a café, but more so than the actual place the time is what makes the setting so crucial to the story. The story takes place at night Hemingway uses this in contrast to the well lighted cafe with its artificial light. The contrast between dark and light is the main idea of the story and it is best expressed through the setting of the story. There are many different examples of this some are literal examples and some are more symbolic. The setting is symbolic as well as literal. The older waiter tells the younger waiter I am of those who like to stay late at the café with all those who don t want to go to bed. With all those who need a light for the night (Hemingway 150). People like the older waiter and the old deaf man not only want to be out at night but they need to bee out at night because they don t like the light or the day and the café provides a clean and respectful place for them to be. The older waiter says, each night I am reluctant to close because there might be some one who needs the café (Hemingway 150). The setting also becomes a safe but artificial place for people like the waiter and the old deaf man to be. The setting in the story is dominated by the dark and the nothingness that comes with the night. Even when the light is available the characters in the story still naturally go to the shadows created by the tree and the artificial light in the dark. • 16. Responsibility In The Rich Brother By Tobias Wolff John D. Rockefeller once said, Every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty. Since the beginning of mankind, humans have been responsible for each other, their family, society, world, and much more. The theme of responsibility is prominent in Tobias Wolff s The Rich Brother, a story that revolves around two distinctive brothers, each rich in his own way. Pete is a happily married, successful businessman, while Donald is a simple, spiritual man searching for his soul. Pete s business life compels him to be smart, materialistic, and self centered, while Donald drifted from church to church, then joined a Pentecostal community that met somewhere in the Mission District to sing in tongues and swap prophecies (Wolff 1). For example, when a man named Webster joins the brothers later in the story, he tells them how he found a gold mine in Peru and is selling shares. Donald irresponsibly gives Webster Pete s money without asking him, and Pete reacts by saying, A hundred dollars. Gone. Just like that. I worked for that money, Donald. I know, I know, Donald said. You don t know! How could you? You get money by holding out your hand (Wolff 10). Donald s humanitarian and spiritual society negatively affects his responsibility towards his brother whose money he gives away to Webster who might potentially be a liar. The Roman historian touched on Augustus interest in Greek literature and almost a hunger to understand and respect it. From this description it felt more like admiration for Augustus attempting to understand what he did not. Yet Suetonius then goes to discuss Augustus sensitivity and immense superstition. More time was spent detailing his fears and strange behavior than depicting his interests in another culture. But considering that Suetonius is a Roman historian, I believe that is safe to assume that it cannot be trusted. The Greeks and Romans at the time had tension from past wars and disagreements. In Rome, Greek wasn t a first language, if it had been Augustus would ve known it. For if he had occasion to use the language, he wrote what he had to say in Latin and gave it to someone else to translate (Suetonius 89). This seems to prove that the first language learned by the Romans was Latin not Greek, meaning that Greek culture came second to Roman culture. Greek culture wasn t a priority. So when considering whether these accounts are real, it s debatable for two reasons. One, the accounts may be real in the sense that Suetonius is depicting through his own narrative how Romans view anyone who is interested in Greek culture. They might seem simple minded and fickle, the way that he seems to describe Augustus. The second reason being that these events could be untrue; Augustus could have had a few small superstitions that Suetonius merely exaggerated because of his potential disapproval of his interest in Greek culture. This would mean that August was curious about Greek culture and the world around him but it was presented to us in a negative way. Personally, because the examples of Augustus worries seemed to be exaggerated, coupled with Suetonius being a Roman historian, I do not trust his account of Augustus completely. The creativity is shown by the content of the advertisement.
