Timothy was a native of Lystra or of Derbe in Lycaonia (Anatolia).
When Paul and Barnabas first visited Lystra, Paul healed a person crippled
from birth, leading many of the inhabitants to accept his teaching
When he returned a few years later with Silas, Timothy was already a
respected member of the Christian congregation, as were his grand-
mother Lois and his mother Eunice, both Jews. - In 2 Timothy 1:5, his
mother and grandmother are noted as eminent for their piety and faith.
Timothy
is said to
have been
acquainted
with the
Scriptures
since
childhood.
In 1 Corinthians
16:10, there is a
suggestion that
he was by nature
reserved and timid:
"When Timothy
comes, see that you
put him at ease
among you, for he
is doing the work
of the Lord".
Timothy's father was a Greek Gentile. Thus Timothy had
not been circumcised and Paul now ensured that this
was done, according to Acts 16:1-3, to ensure Timothy's
acceptability to the Jews whom they would be evangelizing.
Timothy became St Paul's disciple, and later his
constant companion and co-worker in preaching.
In the year 52, Paul and Silas took Timothy along with them on their
journey to Macedonia. Augustine extols his zeal and disinterestedness
in immediately forsaking his country, his house, and his parents,
to follow the apostle, to share in his poverty and sufferings.
2nd Trip of St Paul - At 15.36-18.22. The protagonists were Pablo and Sila-Silvano, who were joined shortly after
by Timoteo. Notably absent is Barnabas, who went with his cousin John-Mark to his native Cyprus and with whom
Paul seems to have broken off his collaboration (Acts 15:39). Paul is the undis-puted leader of the trip. The regions
visited are southern Galatia, evangelized on the first trip, and then Macedonia and Greece. The duration,
depending on the various chronological reconstructions, It is about 4-5 years, around 50 AD.
Timothy may have been subject to ill health or
"frequent ailments", and Paul encouraged him
to "use a little wine for your stomach's sake".
When Paul went on to Athens, Silas and Timothy stayed for some
time at Beroea and Thessalonica before joining Paul at Corinth.
1 Thessalonians 3:1–6 suggests that from Corinth,
Paul sent Timothy back to Thessalonika to enquire
about the community's continued faith,
reporting back that it was in good shape.
Timothy next appears in Acts during Paul's stay in
Ephesus (54–57), and in late A. D. 56 or early 57 Paul
sent him forth to Macedonia with the aim that
he would eventually arrive at Corinth
Timothy arrived at Corinth just after Paul's
letter 1 Corinthians reached that city.
Timothy was with Paul in Corinth during the winter of
57–58 when Paul dispatched his Letter to the Romans.
According to Acts 20:3–6, Timothy
was with Paul in Macedonia just before
Passover in 58; he left the city before Paul,
going ahead of him to await Paul in Troas
His relationship with Paul was close. Paul wrote to the
Philippians about Timothy, "I have no one like him."
When Paul was in prison and awaiting martyrdom, he
summoned his faithful friend Timothy for a last farewell.
That Timothy was jailed at least once during the period of the
writing of the New Testament is implied by the writer of Hebrews
mentioning Timothy's release at the end of the epistle.
In the year 93, during his leadership of the Church in Ephesus, he took a
stand against the worship of idols and was consequently killed by a mob
The apocryphal Acts of Timothy states that in the year 97 AD, the 80-
year-old bishop tried to halt a procession in honor of the goddess
Diana by preaching the Gospel. The angry pagans beat him,
dragged him through the streets, and stoned him to death.
The General Roman Calendar venerates Timothy
together with Titus by a memorial on 26 January, the
day after the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul.
In the 4th century, the relics of Timothy were transferred
from Ephesus to Constantinople and placed in the Church
of the Holy Apostles near the tombs of Andrew and Luke.
Cathedral, Termoli, Italy - in the 13th century, the relics seem
to have been taken to Italy by a count returning from the
crusades, and buried around 1239 in the Termoli Cathedral.
The remains
were
rediscovered
in 1945,
during
restoration
work
Timothy is invoked against stomach and intestinal disorders.
First Timothy (c. 62–64) - The author of this epistle writes to Timothy concerning
the organization of the church and Timothy's own leadership within the body. Major
themes include the use of The Law, warnings against false doctrine such as Encratism,
instructions for prayer, roles of women in the church, qualifications for leaders of the
church, and the treatment of widows, elders, masters, youth, and church members in general.
Second Timothy (c. 62–64)
Paul urges Timothy not to have a
"spirit of timidity" and not to "be
ashamed to testify about our Lord".
-He also entreats Timothy
to come to him before winter,
and to bring Mark with him.
-Paul clearly anticipates his being
put to death and realities beyond in
his valedictory found in 2 Tim4:6–8.
-He exhorts his spiritual "son"
Timothy to all diligence and
steadfastness in the face of false
teachings, with advice about
combating them with reference to
the teachings of the past, and to
patience under persecution, and
to a faithful discharge of all
the duties of his office
Acts of Timothy
The Acts of Timothy (Acta
Timothei) is a work of New
Testament apocrypha, most
likely from the 5th century.
The Acts tell how Paul had
consecrated Timothy as
bishop during Nero's reign
on the occasion of a visit to
Ephesus which they made
together. Then, under Nerva,
Timothy suffers a martyr's
death during a pagan
festival.
Paul urged Timothy to “fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of
the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good
confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:11).
SAINT TITUS
Titus was
a Greek,
apparently
from Crete who
is said to have
studied Greek
philosophy and
poetry in his
early years.
he pursued a life of virtue, and purportedly had a prophetic
dream that caused him to begin reading the Hebrew Scriptures
According to tradition, Titus journeyed to Jerusalem and witnessed the preaching of
Christ during the Lord’s ministry on earth. Only later, however – after the conversion
of St. Paul and the beginning of his ministry – did Titus receive baptism from the
apostle, who called the pagan convert his “true child in our common faith.”
He seems to have been converted by Paul, whereupon he served as
Paul's secretary and interpreter. In the year 49, Titus accompanied Paul
to the council held at Jerusalem, on the subject of the Mosaic rites.
Towards the close of the year 56, Paul, as he himself departed from Asia, sent Titus
from Ephesus to Corinth, with full commission to remedy the fallout precipitated by
Timothy's delivery of 1 Corinthians and Paul's "Painful Visit", particularly a significant
personal offense and challenge to Paul's authority by one unnamed individual.
During this journey, Titus served as the courier for what is commonly known as the
"Severe Letter", a Pauline missive that has been lost but is referred to in 2 Corinthians.
After success on this mission, Titus journeyed north and met Paul in
Macedonia. There the apostle, overjoyed by Titus' success, wrote 2nd
Corinthians. Titus then returned to Corinth with a larger entourage,
carrying the second letter to the Corinthians with him.
Paul joined Titus in Corinth later. From Corinth, Paul then sent Titus to
organize the collections of alms for the Christians at Jerusalem. Titus was
therefore a problem-solver, peacemaker, administrator, and missionary.
Early church tradition holds that Paul, after his release from his first imprisonment in Rome,
stopped at the island of Crete to preach. Due to the needs of other churches, requiring his presence
elsewhere, he ordained his disciple Titus as bishop of that island, and left him to finish the work
he had started. Chrysostom says that this is an indication of the esteem Paul held for Titus.
Paul summoned Titus from Crete to join him at Nicopolis in Epirus. Later,
Titus traveled to Dalmatia. The New Testament does not record his death.
Paul sent his only
surviving letter to
Titus around the
year 64, giving
instructions in
pastoral ministry
to his disciple
The Iraklion church contains the relics of Saint Titus in Greece
the Catholic Church assigned the feast to 26 January so as
to celebrate the two disciples of Paul, Titus and Timothy,
the day after the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul.
Titus is the patron
saint of the United
States Army
Chaplain Corps.
The Corps has
established the
Order of Titus
Award, described
by the Department
of Defense:

Saints Timothy and Titus, bishops,martyrs.pptx

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3. Timothy was a native of Lystra or of Derbe in Lycaonia (Anatolia).
  • 4. When Paul and Barnabas first visited Lystra, Paul healed a person crippled from birth, leading many of the inhabitants to accept his teaching
  • 5. When he returned a few years later with Silas, Timothy was already a respected member of the Christian congregation, as were his grand- mother Lois and his mother Eunice, both Jews. - In 2 Timothy 1:5, his mother and grandmother are noted as eminent for their piety and faith.
  • 6. Timothy is said to have been acquainted with the Scriptures since childhood.
  • 7. In 1 Corinthians 16:10, there is a suggestion that he was by nature reserved and timid: "When Timothy comes, see that you put him at ease among you, for he is doing the work of the Lord".
  • 8. Timothy's father was a Greek Gentile. Thus Timothy had not been circumcised and Paul now ensured that this was done, according to Acts 16:1-3, to ensure Timothy's acceptability to the Jews whom they would be evangelizing.
  • 9. Timothy became St Paul's disciple, and later his constant companion and co-worker in preaching.
  • 10. In the year 52, Paul and Silas took Timothy along with them on their journey to Macedonia. Augustine extols his zeal and disinterestedness in immediately forsaking his country, his house, and his parents, to follow the apostle, to share in his poverty and sufferings.
  • 11. 2nd Trip of St Paul - At 15.36-18.22. The protagonists were Pablo and Sila-Silvano, who were joined shortly after by Timoteo. Notably absent is Barnabas, who went with his cousin John-Mark to his native Cyprus and with whom Paul seems to have broken off his collaboration (Acts 15:39). Paul is the undis-puted leader of the trip. The regions visited are southern Galatia, evangelized on the first trip, and then Macedonia and Greece. The duration, depending on the various chronological reconstructions, It is about 4-5 years, around 50 AD.
  • 12. Timothy may have been subject to ill health or "frequent ailments", and Paul encouraged him to "use a little wine for your stomach's sake".
  • 13. When Paul went on to Athens, Silas and Timothy stayed for some time at Beroea and Thessalonica before joining Paul at Corinth.
  • 14. 1 Thessalonians 3:1–6 suggests that from Corinth, Paul sent Timothy back to Thessalonika to enquire about the community's continued faith, reporting back that it was in good shape.
  • 15. Timothy next appears in Acts during Paul's stay in Ephesus (54–57), and in late A. D. 56 or early 57 Paul sent him forth to Macedonia with the aim that he would eventually arrive at Corinth
  • 16. Timothy arrived at Corinth just after Paul's letter 1 Corinthians reached that city.
  • 17. Timothy was with Paul in Corinth during the winter of 57–58 when Paul dispatched his Letter to the Romans.
  • 18. According to Acts 20:3–6, Timothy was with Paul in Macedonia just before Passover in 58; he left the city before Paul, going ahead of him to await Paul in Troas
  • 19. His relationship with Paul was close. Paul wrote to the Philippians about Timothy, "I have no one like him." When Paul was in prison and awaiting martyrdom, he summoned his faithful friend Timothy for a last farewell.
  • 20. That Timothy was jailed at least once during the period of the writing of the New Testament is implied by the writer of Hebrews mentioning Timothy's release at the end of the epistle.
  • 21. In the year 93, during his leadership of the Church in Ephesus, he took a stand against the worship of idols and was consequently killed by a mob
  • 22. The apocryphal Acts of Timothy states that in the year 97 AD, the 80- year-old bishop tried to halt a procession in honor of the goddess Diana by preaching the Gospel. The angry pagans beat him, dragged him through the streets, and stoned him to death.
  • 23. The General Roman Calendar venerates Timothy together with Titus by a memorial on 26 January, the day after the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul.
  • 24. In the 4th century, the relics of Timothy were transferred from Ephesus to Constantinople and placed in the Church of the Holy Apostles near the tombs of Andrew and Luke.
  • 25. Cathedral, Termoli, Italy - in the 13th century, the relics seem to have been taken to Italy by a count returning from the crusades, and buried around 1239 in the Termoli Cathedral.
  • 27. Timothy is invoked against stomach and intestinal disorders.
  • 28. First Timothy (c. 62–64) - The author of this epistle writes to Timothy concerning the organization of the church and Timothy's own leadership within the body. Major themes include the use of The Law, warnings against false doctrine such as Encratism, instructions for prayer, roles of women in the church, qualifications for leaders of the church, and the treatment of widows, elders, masters, youth, and church members in general.
  • 29. Second Timothy (c. 62–64) Paul urges Timothy not to have a "spirit of timidity" and not to "be ashamed to testify about our Lord". -He also entreats Timothy to come to him before winter, and to bring Mark with him. -Paul clearly anticipates his being put to death and realities beyond in his valedictory found in 2 Tim4:6–8. -He exhorts his spiritual "son" Timothy to all diligence and steadfastness in the face of false teachings, with advice about combating them with reference to the teachings of the past, and to patience under persecution, and to a faithful discharge of all the duties of his office
  • 30. Acts of Timothy The Acts of Timothy (Acta Timothei) is a work of New Testament apocrypha, most likely from the 5th century. The Acts tell how Paul had consecrated Timothy as bishop during Nero's reign on the occasion of a visit to Ephesus which they made together. Then, under Nerva, Timothy suffers a martyr's death during a pagan festival.
  • 31. Paul urged Timothy to “fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:11).
  • 33. Titus was a Greek, apparently from Crete who is said to have studied Greek philosophy and poetry in his early years.
  • 34. he pursued a life of virtue, and purportedly had a prophetic dream that caused him to begin reading the Hebrew Scriptures
  • 35. According to tradition, Titus journeyed to Jerusalem and witnessed the preaching of Christ during the Lord’s ministry on earth. Only later, however – after the conversion of St. Paul and the beginning of his ministry – did Titus receive baptism from the apostle, who called the pagan convert his “true child in our common faith.”
  • 36. He seems to have been converted by Paul, whereupon he served as Paul's secretary and interpreter. In the year 49, Titus accompanied Paul to the council held at Jerusalem, on the subject of the Mosaic rites.
  • 37. Towards the close of the year 56, Paul, as he himself departed from Asia, sent Titus from Ephesus to Corinth, with full commission to remedy the fallout precipitated by Timothy's delivery of 1 Corinthians and Paul's "Painful Visit", particularly a significant personal offense and challenge to Paul's authority by one unnamed individual. During this journey, Titus served as the courier for what is commonly known as the "Severe Letter", a Pauline missive that has been lost but is referred to in 2 Corinthians.
  • 38. After success on this mission, Titus journeyed north and met Paul in Macedonia. There the apostle, overjoyed by Titus' success, wrote 2nd Corinthians. Titus then returned to Corinth with a larger entourage, carrying the second letter to the Corinthians with him.
  • 39. Paul joined Titus in Corinth later. From Corinth, Paul then sent Titus to organize the collections of alms for the Christians at Jerusalem. Titus was therefore a problem-solver, peacemaker, administrator, and missionary.
  • 40. Early church tradition holds that Paul, after his release from his first imprisonment in Rome, stopped at the island of Crete to preach. Due to the needs of other churches, requiring his presence elsewhere, he ordained his disciple Titus as bishop of that island, and left him to finish the work he had started. Chrysostom says that this is an indication of the esteem Paul held for Titus.
  • 41. Paul summoned Titus from Crete to join him at Nicopolis in Epirus. Later, Titus traveled to Dalmatia. The New Testament does not record his death.
  • 42. Paul sent his only surviving letter to Titus around the year 64, giving instructions in pastoral ministry to his disciple
  • 43. The Iraklion church contains the relics of Saint Titus in Greece
  • 44. the Catholic Church assigned the feast to 26 January so as to celebrate the two disciples of Paul, Titus and Timothy, the day after the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul.
  • 45. Titus is the patron saint of the United States Army Chaplain Corps. The Corps has established the Order of Titus Award, described by the Department of Defense:

  1. 2nd TRIP - At 15.36-18.22. The protagonists were (at least) Pablo and Sila-Silvano, who were joined shortly after by Timoteo. Notably absent is Barnabas, who went with his cousin John-Mark to his native Cyprus and with whom Paul seems to have broken off his collaboration (Acts 15:39). Paolo is the undisputed leader of the trip. The regions touched are southern Galatia, evangelized on the first trip, and then Macedonia and Greece. The duration, depending on the various chronological reconstructions,It is about 4-5 years old, and can be placed around 50 AD.
