Volunteering can influence policymakers in several ways. Volunteers and their organizations can directly or indirectly contribute to policy decisions. The key challenges are finding the right policymakers to target, formulating issues clearly, finding consensus among organizations and volunteers, and developing an effective strategy. Successful strategies include twisting an issue to gain attention, cooperation across groups, countering lobbying efforts, building a strong case file, and networking and lobbying at different policy levels.
Volunteers for Cultural heritage: a partnership perspective on current trends...heritageorganisations.eu
VoCh – Volunteers for Cultural Heritage was a European project, funded by the European Commission Brussels as part of the Grundtvig lifelong learning programme. The project began in November 2007 and finished in October 2009.
The project started out by acknowledging the importance of volunteering as a positive act of citizenship and the increasing significance of volunteers for preserving cultural heritage, promoting access to heritage and collections and, in many instances, running cultural institutions such as museums.
Its main activities and outputs were:
* Europe-wide research on volunteers in the cultural heritage sector
* Identification of good practice case studies
* Design, development and delivery of training schemes for volunteers and volunteer coordinators
* Development and publication of guidelines for good practice when working with volunteers
Adele Finley will present an overview of the research and its results before moving on to discuss the main trends and issues which emerged. She will explore the themes of participation, active citizenship and audience development by drawing on good practice case studies identified during the project.

ECOVAST (European Council for the Village and Small Town) is a pan-european NGO supporting local initiatives of heritage conservation and sustainable rural development in villages and small towns.
Croatian Section of ECOVAST , in cooperation with other similar national organizations and with involvement of local citizens (local governments, volunteers) developed a project of revitalization of villages through restoring traditional buildings in Croatia.
The presentation (power-point) will focus on two examples of restoration activity undertaken for different types of houses in two different areas: a traditional East Slavonia sun-dried brick house in Erdut and Dalj vine-growing area, with collaboration of volunteers from a regional organization and a local Society of Hungarian Minority – thus promoting intercultural dialogue; the other is a wooden type of house with thatched roof in a hilly Zagorje area of North-West Croatia, where we support the local community of Bednja and their voluntary heritage initiatives.
The aim of this project is also to establish a network of people and organizations involved in heritage conservation and management, as well as producing a practical publication/video for the local population interested in restoration process of their traditional architecture.
The document discusses the concept of heritage literacy. It provides definitions of literacy and heritage from various sources. Heritage literacy involves developing an understanding of heritage through education and is important for community development and sustainable development. The document outlines three levels of heritage literacy: 1) ability to experience or recognize heritage, 2) ability to interpret and reflect on heritage, and 3) ability to analyze and critically examine heritage including its societal, economic, and political aspects. It provides two examples of heritage-focused community projects in Croatia aimed at reconciliation, repopulation, and development through heritage education.

The Allard Pierson museum in Amsterdam celebrates its 75th anniversary by showcasing new technologies that help to understand and enjoy cultural heritage in the exhibition ‘The Future for our Past’. This exhibition focuses not only on innovative ways to digitise and showcase cultural heritage, but provides a rich, visual language that is in line with the current youth culture. The exhibition shows augmented reality on mobile devices (showing for example the Forum in Rome in 320 AD), allows to walk your avatar through the ruins and reconstructions of the villa of Livia (the wive of emperor Augustus) or shows the broken statue of a pharao being transported in time to its original state. By focusing on heritage education for youngsters, the exhibition makes a firm statement on where the Future of the Past lies.
Together with this exhibition, a series of workshops for cultural heritage experts will be held that shows the workflow behind each setup at the exhibition and allows to get acquainted with the do’s and don’ts of these new technologies.

Protection of historical-cultural and natural heritage in Azerbaijan and acti...heritageorganisations.eu
- The document discusses issues around the protection of Azerbaijan's historical, cultural, and natural heritage, as well as the activities of NGOs on these issues.
- There are laws to protect heritage sites, but enforcement is weak and decisions are often made without professional expertise or public input. This has led to damage of monuments and green spaces.
- In response, a network of over 30 NGOs was established to advocate for better protection. They have filed lawsuits and complaints over demolition of heritage sites, but faced bureaucratic barriers and delays in the legal system.
- The NGOs are conducting monitoring and need international support to help preserve Azerbaijan's historic city of Baku and
Push your government. The Old-Limburgian Schuttersfeast as intangible cultura...heritageorganisations.eu
A place on the Unseco representative list of intangible cultural heritage is the ultimate acceptance of any specific tradition. For instance the Old Limburgian Schuttersfeast (OLS), a yearly event for some 170 local historical guilds, which exists for more than several centuries in both the Limburg provinces, one in Belgium and one in the Netherlands.
This OLS ca only be organised with the help of more than 1.000 volunteers, who on behalf of one of the guilds prepare the outside-place with tents and equip it well to welcome there all the guilds and some 40.000 visitors, that look at the pageant and the competing matches, eat and drink, talk and have fun. The organisation has just one year to get it all done, because the winner of the competition of that specific day has to organize it next year. There is a big receipt of the winners in their hometown and after that they have to start the organisation with a lot of members from their community. Luckily there is a good cooperation with the local government and the OLS-Federation helps to continue organising a typical local historical guilds festival, which is attractive for the guilds themselve and thousands of visitors.
As a consequence of the suggestion of the flemish (Belgian) government to push the named OLS upward onto the Unesco-list, this event is agreed upon via the flemish national list. Problem however is that the dutch government didn’t yet ratified the Unesco cultural intangible heritage convention.
So, our plan is to mobilise everyone involved, the 7.000 participants (members of the historical guilds), the thousands of visitors, the flemish government, both the Provincie-governments of dutch and Belgium Limburg, to convince the dutch government to firstly agree upon the Unesco cultural intangible heritage convention and then to recognize the OLS as an important tradition as such. With support of two countries we’re shure that the Unesco also will recognise the ancient and traditonal guilds and their annual feast with several competitions as quite specific and important cultural heritage.
So, join us for the ‘push-the-government’-programm.
The document summarizes an educational program called "Traces of the Past" that teaches students about cultural heritage and history in Europe. The program is a partnership between organizations in Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. It engages students in researching and restoring historical monuments to build awareness of multicultural heritage and cultural diversity in Europe. Examples of student projects include researching the history of Jews in a Polish town and restoring an old synagogue in Germany.

Civil society action in the field of heritage in Europe: strengths and weakne...heritageorganisations.eu
Civil society action in the field of cultural heritage in Europe has both strengths and weaknesses. It plays an important role in mediating functions like education and advocacy. However, civil society action related to cultural heritage suffers from fragmentation, a lack of global coordination, and tension between tangible and intangible heritage concepts. Recent conventions and frameworks like the Faro Convention emphasize broader participation and see heritage as reflecting community identities rather than just nation states, opening new opportunities for civil society to engage across borders on cultural issues.
This document discusses heritage care through active citizenship. It argues that heritage is more than just physical structures and involves how communities view and interact with their shared cultural traditions over time. It also emphasizes that heritage should be inclusive of diverse identities and experiences. Effective heritage preservation requires a sense of shared responsibility and involvement among local citizens, governments, and organizations.
The document provides a brief history of Norway and cultural heritage organizations. It summarizes key events such as the end of the Viking age in 1030, the establishment of the first law for cultural heritage in 1897, and the dissolution of the union with Sweden in 1905. It also discusses the roles non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can play in balancing government power, contributing to public debates, and activating local resources to help preserve cultural heritage.
The document discusses active citizenship and community involvement in heritage care. It raises several questions: how can local communities and professionals work together effectively; how can younger generations be involved to sustain heritage care long-term; and how can governments and non-profits build collaborative relationships to balance priorities and resolve conflicts of interest. The goal is to motivate volunteers and foster local identities while avoiding isolationism or the instrumentalization of heritage for other agendas.
Small, rebellious museums. Heritage awaiting a succession (Sandra Ferracuti)heritageorganisations.eu
This document discusses the history and practices of spontaneous or grassroots ethnographic museums in Italy run by amateur researchers since the 1970s who aim to preserve examples of Italian pre-industrial life. It also references the work of inhabitants of the village of Armungia in Sardinia who recalled and preserved tangible elements of their cultural history related to traditional livelihoods in response to depopulation and unemployment threats in the present. Finally, it discusses collaborative and reflexive approaches to museography that engage in dialogue between different cultural perspectives and heritages.

interculturelle »
16. IV. Le processus d’intégration
3. La réflexivité relativisante
Une prise de conscience plus distanciée qui,
par la réflexion,
permet de relativiser les caractéristiques d’autrui
17. Conclusion de la 1ère partie
