If current practices continue, the fashion sector could consume 1/4 of the world’s carbon budget by 2050. Shoppers are increasingly aware of the social and environmental impacts of the garment industry. While some improvements have been made in reporting and manufacturing technology, those gains are quickly erased by the ever-persisting demand for new clothing. Women-owned and socially-driven businesses must meet the need for positive change by educating the masses and utilizing transparent and circular technologies in their supply chains. If harnessed well, the brands that lead those improvements will likely lead the industry in the future. Experts will discuss the intersection of fashion with technology, gender, and the environment, and how we can move towards better fashion industry.

Sustainable fashion, also called eco-fashion, aims to create a system that is environmentally friendly and socially responsible. The global apparel industry accounts for 10% of carbon emissions and remains the second largest industrial polluter after oil. Most garment workers worldwide, who are often women, labor without proper contracts or benefits and face long work hours and unsafe conditions. To be sustainable, a fashion brand should use organic and renewable materials like organic cotton and hemp, and ensure fair treatment of workers throughout the supply chain.
