Learning about the Narrative essay writing.
A narrative essay is a type of essay that tells a story from the author's personal perspective or
experiences. Unlike other types of essays that primarily focus on presenting arguments or analyzing
information, a narrative essay focuses on engaging the reader by recounting events in a chronological
order, often with vivid descriptions and sensory details.
Key features of a narrative essay include:
1. Narrative Structure: A narrative essay typically follows a chronological order, presenting events
in the order they occurred. It often includes elements such as exposition, rising action, climax,
falling action, and resolution, similar to the structure of a story.
2. First-Person Perspective: Narrative essays are usually written from the first-person perspective,
allowing the author to share their personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences directly with the
reader. This personal voice creates a sense of intimacy and authenticity in the narrative.
3. Descriptive Language: Effective narrative essays use descriptive language to create vivid
imagery and evoke sensory experiences in the reader's mind. Descriptions of settings, characters,
and actions help to immerse the reader in the story and make it come alive.
4. Reflective Element: In addition to recounting events, narrative essays often include a reflective
element where the author reflects on the significance of the experience or draws insights and
lessons learned from the story.
5. Emotional Impact: Narrative essays can evoke a range of emotions in the reader, from joy and
laughter to sadness or contemplation. By sharing personal experiences and emotions, the author
aims to create a meaningful connection with the reader.
Examples of narrative essays include personal narratives, memoirs, anecdotes, and travel essays. These
essays can cover a wide range of topics, from personal milestones and life-changing experiences to
everyday encounters and observations.
Overall, a narrative essay provides a platform for the author to share their unique perspective and engage
the reader through storytelling, making it a powerful and compelling form of writing.
Following questions can help students understand the nature of narrative essays.
1. Describe a memorable childhood experience that has had a lasting impact on you.
2. Share a moment when you overcame a significant challenge or obstacle in your life.
3. Reflect on a time when you learned an important lesson from a mistake or failure.
4. Recount a moment of personal growth or transformation that changed your perspective on life.
5. Describe a memorable travel experience that broadened your horizons or changed your worldview.
6. Share a story about a special friendship or relationship that has shaped who you are today.
7. Reflect on a meaningful cultural or family tradition and its significance in your life.
8. Describe a moment of triumph or achievement that made you feel proud of yourself.
9. Recount a humorous or embarrassing incident that you can now laugh about.
10. Share a story about a mentor or role model who has had a profound influence on you.
Identifying features of a narrative
Narrative writing encompasses various elements that contribute to the development and structure of a
story, an event, an accident, or any situation based account. These elements help engage the reader,
convey the plot effectively, and create a compelling narrative experience. The table below offers a brief
description of various elements in a narrative or story. Please note that while some elements are an
essential part of each narrative, others such as symbolism may or may not be present.
Fill in the third column of the table after identifying relevant features from Reading Passage 3.1.1 “What
am I worth?” The first one has been done for you.

Exercise 2
Developing outline of a narrative
Now that you understand the different essential and optional elements of narrative, it is time to create an
outline for a narrative of your own. You may opt for fiction or non-fiction. Here are a few suggested
themes to choose from:
1. Standing Up for What's Right
2. Respecting Cultural Diversity
3. The Power of Empathy
Once you have decided upon a theme, it is time to create an outline. Use the planning sheet below to
create an outline. Remember that you are currently working on a rough draft. You will later have an
opportunity to revise your work.

Exercise 3
Drafting, evaluating, and finalizing the narrative
Now that you have created an outline for your narrative, it is time to write the first draft. Use ideas from
the outline sheet to create the first draft.
1. Review your work from Exercises 1 and 2 to ensure you include all necessary elements. Spend time
assigned by your instructor to create your first draft.
2. Once your draft is prepared, exchange it with a peer. Use the checklist below to review their work.
Also, offer them some constructive feedback and suggestions to help improve the work.
3. After receiving your peer’s feedback, work on your draft to incorporate missing elements and
suggestions offered, thus editing, and proofreading to compose the final draft. The same checklist can
be used for self-evaluation as well.

Title: Finding Courage: My First Day of School
As the sun peeked through the curtains, signaling the dawn of a new day, my heart raced with
excitement and nervousness. Today was the day I would embark on a new adventure - my first day
of school. I was filled with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension, unsure of what to expect but
eager to explore this unfamiliar territory.
I vividly remember the morning of my first day of school. The air was crisp, and the streets were
bustling with children and parents making their way to the school gates. My mother held my hand
tightly as we walked towards the school building, her reassuring presence providing me with a
sense of comfort amidst the sea of unfamiliar faces.
As we approached the entrance, I felt a knot forming in my stomach. The school loomed before me
like a daunting fortress, its towering walls casting a shadow of uncertainty over me. I hesitated for
a moment, my tiny feet rooted to the ground, but my mother's gentle encouragement urged me
forward.
Stepping through the threshold, I was greeted by a whirlwind of sights and sounds - the chatter of
excited voices, the shuffle of footsteps, and the aroma of freshly sharpened pencils. The school
buzzed with energy and anticipation, a vibrant tapestry of colors and emotions.
My eyes scanned the room, searching for a familiar face amidst the crowd of strangers. My heart
sank as I realized that I was alone in this unfamiliar environment. Fear threatened to engulf me like
a tidal wave, but I knew that I had to find the courage to face this challenge head-on.
Summoning all the courage within me, I took a deep breath and approached a group of children
huddled together in the corner of the room. With trembling hands and a voice barely above a
whisper, I introduced myself, hoping to find a friend amidst the sea of unfamiliar faces.
To my relief, the children welcomed me with open arms, their smiles warm and inviting. In that
moment, I realized that I was not alone - I had found a community of kindred spirits who would
support me through the ups and downs of this journey called life.

As the day unfolded, I immersed myself in the whirlwind of activities - from storytime to recess,
each moment filled with wonder and excitement. With each passing hour, my apprehension gave
way to a newfound sense of confidence and belonging.
Looking back on that memorable day, I am reminded of the importance of courage in the face of
uncertainty. My first day of school taught me that sometimes, the greatest adventures begin with a
single step into the unknown. And as I continue to navigate the winding road of life, I carry with me
the lessons learned on that fateful day - the lesson that courage is not the absence of fear, but the
triumph over it.
