Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment
Running Head: SEPSIS DETECTION AND TREATMENT
Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment
Steven H. Gregory
Chamberlain College of Nursing
March28, 2009
Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment Severe Sepsis affects 750,000 Americans and causes more than
200,000 deaths annually. Sepsis is a complex condition that results from an infectious process that
represents the body s response to infection and involves systemic inflammatory and cellular events that
result in altered circulation and coagulation, endothelial dysfunction and impaired tissue perfusion
(Kleinpell, 2005). Associated mortality rates with sepsis in the United States have remained largely
unchanged for several decades. Through an international collaboration known as the ... Show more content

Treatment of Sepsis
As stated in Rivers, Nguyed, Havstad, Ressler, Muzzin, Knolich et al. (2001):
Early hemodynamic assessment on the basis of physical findings, vital signs, central venous pressure, and
urinary output fails to detect persistent global tissue hypoxia. A more definitive resuscitation strategy
involves goal oriented manipulation of cardiac preload, afterload, and contractility to achieve a balance
between systemic oxygen delivery and oxygen demand. End points used to confirm the achievement of
such a balance (hereafter called resuscitation end points) include normalized values for mixed venous
oxygen saturation, arterial lactate concentration, base deficit, and pH. Mixed venous oxygen saturation has
been shown to be a surrogate for the cardiac index as a target for hemodynamic therapy. In cases in which
the insertion of a pulmonary artery catheter is impractical, venous oxygen saturation can be measured in the
central circulation (p. 1368).
The focus for the general care nurse outside of the ICU is to be able to recognize sepsis and to initiate
appropriate interventions in an appropriate amount of time. Nurses need to facilitate the transfer of the
patient to an ICU as urgently as possible. Once sepsis is suspected, it is important to closely monitor
patients for signs and symptoms of progression with increasing frequency of assessments. While awaiting
transfer of a patient to the ICU

Fifth Business Quotes
In the novel, Fifth Business by Robertson Davies, Dunstan Ramsey s life choices are greatly impacted by
his guilt. At the young age of ten years old, Dunstan s life was changed by association with a traumatic
experience, Mrs. Dempster, a pregnant woman, was hit by an incoming snowball thrown by Percy Boyd
Staunton meant for Dunstan. This snowball caused Mrs. Dempster to go into labour, 80 days before she was
supposed to, as well as causing life changing brain damage. Mrs. Dempster was forever labelled as simple
by the people of the town. Percy showed no emotion towards this event ever occurring and because Dunstan
felt someone should be responsible for this incident, he put the blame on himself. As a Presbyterian, a

Kidnapped Character Analysis
Kidnapped, the first book in a two part series by Robert Louis Stevenson, follows a recently orphaned
seventeen year old as he attempts both mentally and physically to survive the time after his father s death.
He first attempts to go to Ebenezer Balfour s home, and he is met by an uncle who had a falling out with his
father over his mother. His uncle gives him an old, destroyed room to stay in with broken windows; he then
tricks him to board Captain Hoseason s ship while in town shopping so that he can sell David into slavery.
Aboard the Covenant, David is treated poorly until he becomes the new cabin boy for the ship. The ship
wrecks onto the Isle of Earraid in Scotland; he and Alan Stewart are the only survivors, but he does not
realize this until happening upon a house on an island nearby. They meet up and journey whilst
encountering many problems along the way. Eventually, David makes his way back to the town of
Queensferry, his uncle s home. Throughout Kidnapped, he is met with hostility and violent situations from
place to place along his journey whether his change in location is intentional or forced. Setting affects the
emotional and physical wellbeing of David Balfour in Kidnapped as shown through his response to his
multiple changes in environment, location, and caregivers. One way in which the settings affects David s
mental and physical health is by the different environments in which he is placed. David is faced with the
necessity of fighting for his own life

Essay On Your Daughter Dances Flamenco
A red and black swirl, that s how it all started. I remember it like it was yesterday. My mother and I were
standing in line at a frame shop. There was a girl with a black leotard and a red flowy skirt standing in front
of us, with her mother. Your daughter dances Flamenco, right? Where does she take classes? My mother
asked the girl s mother. Next thing I remember, I was in a dance studio, staring at a group of dancers who
seemed to be flying across the room, all wearing long skirts and dance shoes. I couldn t take my eyes off of
them. I didn t know it right then, but fourteen years later, I would be able to dance just like any of those
dancers I was staring at with dreamy eyes. Practicing dance, preparing dance plays and performances ...

I can relate dancing to playing in two different ways. The first one, of course, whenever I am dancing I can
certainly feel like I am playing a game. By this I don t mean that I don t take dance seriously. For the
contrary, I enjoy dance to a level where I feel just like when I am playing a videogame. Each new step I
have to learn, represents a new challenge. Once I am able to correctly perform said step, I have to keep
practicing until I can perform it perfectly, then I can move on to the next step. Once a choreography is
complete, we, as dancers, are supposed to rehearse it over and over again until we feel as confident as we
can in order to be able to perform it in the theatre. Reaching that point for me is like defeating the boss in a
Mario Bros. game. One can say the turtles, owls, and other enemies in the game could be represented by
blisters, twisted ankles, mistakes committed, and some other challenges we may encounter while trying to
master a piece of choreography.
The other way I can relate dance to play, which is kind of the most obvious one, are dance plays. Last year,
I played the role of Anastasia Romanov at the Foro de Arte y Cultura in Guadalajara, Mexico. At some
points it did, in fact, feel like I was playing pretend. I wore a costume that looked exactly like what
Anastasia wore in the animated movie and dyed my hair copper. Of course, I watched the movie probably a
hundred times trying to

Education Policies And The Greens
Social wellbeing is contingent upon equitable social policy addressing all varieties of demographics and
needs. One highly contested social policy issue in Aotearoa is that of tertiary education. Tertiary education
policies are proposed by multiple parties, however the most contentious of these can be drawn from the
Greens and ACT who hold highly opposing social wellbeing ideologies. Essentially, to reveal binary
oppositions between these policies, market and state ideologies must be considered, in addition to the
opposing views of individualism and collectivism which form the cornerstone of how social wellbeing will
be met. Moreover, the differences ACT and the Greens see in what tertiary education should offer,
ultimately reveal their opposing ideologies in policy, and their perspectives towards social wellbeing. Act
and the Greens both agree that Aotearoa as a country in the developed world should face minimal social
inequalities, however they hold vastly different opinions on how this should be achieved. By comparing
ACT who hold market beliefs to the Greens who hold state beliefs it is increasingly evident that extreme
beliefs drawn from either end of the political spectrum pose significant problems in meeting social
milestones. Market beliefs are often viewed as conservative and in the field of postcompulsory education

Rational Choice Theory Essay
There are three main points that are reinforced in rational choice theory (Cornish and Clarke, 1986). First, it
may work better or worse for different types of crime, yet it is thought that there are rational choices in
every type of crime even impulsive and pathologic crimes. Second, the theory should be applied on a crime
specific basis. Hence, burglaries can t be grouped together in among residential and commercial categories.
Rather, they must be broken into smaller facets such as public housing burglaries or wealthy residential
neighborhoods. Finally, a distinction is made between criminal involvement and criminal events. Criminal
involvement describes how individuals get involved in crime and further continue or abstain from ... Show

The later occurs when a specific offender is deterred from crime through sanctions. Thus, the benefits and
drawbacks of crime have sway with both deterrence and rational choice theories, but rational choice doesn t
make headway for a population as a whole or limit the individual to those previously punished.
The strengths of the rational choice theory are also seen when comparing it to the routine activity theory,
which proposes that three elements are needed for crime: motivated offenders, suitable targets, and the
absence of capable guardians (Cohen and Felson, 1979). Hence, environmental conditions must be right for
crime to occur. This relates to one similarity of the rational choice theory, which is the account for
situational variables such as the likelihood of punishment (Cornish and Clarke, 1986). In contrast, routine
activity theory doesn t look at why the individual commits crime (Cohen and Felson, 1979). Instead, this
propensity is assumed, while the rational choice theory looks specifically at the reasons individuals commit
offenses.
The broken windows theory reduces the cause of crime to the amount of disorder in a community (Wilson
and Kelling, 1982). Basically, if there are broken windows in buildings it can result in allowing more
vandalism, which leads more riff raff on the streets. This creates a fear for citizens to go out in the
neighborhood, which limits the visibility of proactive

He s the man, said an American as he left the seats at the Tour de France with his wife. Born on September

excellent talent as a cyclist; and a lot of people loved him. Everyone had flags with Texas on them and they
all cheered for Lance to win the race and he won it for his seventh time. However, that all changed once he
was officially being diagnosed with cancer. It affected his cycling abilities terribly, and he could no longer

questions about what he said, and then what he did when he was cycling and she also was cooperatively

very well. Now, modern day, Lance has his own official foundation for people to visit and give donations to

In the end, Lance Armstrong was a very good cyclist and a very talented young man. Now aged 46, he has 2

Beautiful Forevers.
Slumdog Millionaire shows Jamal s slumdog childhood as an exciting adventure, carefree, always finding
ways to acquire food or money, and narrowly escaping punishment for his deviant acts every time; however,
the reality of childhood in the slum is better illustrated in Boo s book since it expose the danger of problems
such as hunger, illness and childhood deviance. Behind the Beautiful Forevers describes numerous children
s tragic death due to the pressures of their hardship and social injustice. Sometimes leading them to unjust
death on the road without clear cause. For example, Sanjay, a young boy in the slum was pressured to end
his life after he thought that he was going to be captured and tortured by police or killed by gangsters for
being a witness to a crime. Boo described, [Sanjay] was convulsing on the floor. Pulling Sanjay up, thinking
that he was having a seizure, his mother caught a chemical reek on his breath. His sister retrieved a white
plastic bottle from the corner of the room...But the empty plastic bottle was rat poison...He lived for two
hours after reaching the public hospital (Boo 171 72). The tragic death of Sanjay shows the immense
pressure of living in the slum which can lead to a young boy taking his life away without second thoughts.

The Struggles Indigenous Peoples Face to Obtain Justice Essay
There are over 5000 Indigenous communities in over 70 different countries. They are defined collectively
under the term Indigenous Peoples (IPs) by the Cobo Report but this term also allows for their diversity.
They face numerous legal issues in attempting to achieve their rights, so they have collectively united to
access the remedies available to them to achieve justice.
Broad characteristics to define them are highlighted in the Mick Dodson report and include: connection
with territory that pre dates invasion, social and cultural traditions such as affinity with the land and
colonisation, resistance and resurgence.
The issues facing IPs is the struggle to collectively achieve four rights which are recognised under in

However, there are numerous global pressures detrimentally affecting IPs struggle with the legal issues they
have.
Colonisation, transnational corporations, and environmental degradation can act as a catalyst to struggle for
their rights as seen in Bougainville or concepts that impede their struggle.
Sovereignty, while allowing national governments to implement international remedies, is also the concept
which stops national governments from acting in the interests of IPs through lack of political will. The
concept inherent to IPs legal issues is that national governments see it purely as a domestic issue.
International instruments such as treaties and conventions are bilateral or multilateral agreements between
states governed by intemational laws which are binding. The International Covenant for Civil and Political
Rights mentions self determination and are is signed by many states such as Australia. Some bilateral
treaties were also signed between colonisers and IPs such as the Treaty of Waitangi (1840) but were biased,
unenforceable and not recognised under international law. Declarations are statements of principles but are
not binding. An example is the Draft Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples created by Working
Group on Indigenous Populations (WGIP). The United Nations is a world form, created after WWII, with
the main aim of creating international peace and security. All member nations have one vote

In 1980, Zimbabwe after being liberated, the government vigorously invested in all sectors of the economy
(health, education, mining, universal access to services but this in turn led to the government budget deficits
in the mid 1980s and forced the government to look for ways to finance its excessive expenditure.
Zimbabwe was then persuaded to implement ESAP. The programme was to run from year 1991 to 1995.
ESAP was a package with instruments to be adhered to, and these were the components:
1. Reduction of government expenditure through privatization
2. Removing wage controls
3. Removing controls on exchange rates
4. Removing subsidies on basic goods
5. Removal of price control measures
The basis of these components was to let the market control the economy and reduce government bills
thereby cutting the expenditure. Although the neo liberalists favor the IMF and WB reform packages, the
ESAP were to a larger extent disastrous in the different sectors of the economy ranging from people s lives,
health, education, agriculture and the macro and micro economy in Zimbabwe. According to Dhliwayo
(2001), the decision to want a major economic reform programs in Zimbabwe dates back to the beginning
of the 1980s, with the main aim of attracting aid from international donors so that the country might close
both the resource and trade gaps in order to meet its economic targets. The ESAP was sought to transform

Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the Bishop of Hippo which is situated in Africa. He is

We will see the different incidents and learn from authors struggles and how he overcame the situation. I
feel in order to understand what author is trying to say from his text, we need to understand the narrative of
his confessions. St. Augustine is writing these texts as a confession to God. And it is so beautiful to see how
openly he writes his confession, I mean he opens his heart out there, no wonder it was encouraging for early
church leaders. I love how he says in book two, sixteenth year I purpose now to set down my past
wickedness and the carnal corruption of my soul, not for love of them but that I may love Thee, O my God.
I do it for love of Thy love, passing again in bitterness of remembrance over my most evil ways that Thou
mayest thereby grow lovelier to me Author is confessing that he wants to turn away from his wicked path
and he want to live a righteous life, He wants to do it for God s love, he wants to clean his wicked soul and
leave those wicked paths. St. Augustine is confessing how he did not keep the count of his friendship, he
believed in love and to be loved, but when he grew up things changed he got involved into lustful ways and
forgot the real meaning of friendship. He was blinded by the pride and was tempted which took him away

Emotion, Memory, And Decision Making
Emotional arousal appears to have a huge effect on processing, memory, and decision making. For
memories specifically, we tend to rehearse and review episodes of intense emotions frequently, allowing
them to be stronger and more relevant memories (Gluck, 2014). Flashbulb memories suggest that emotion
can greatly increase memory coding, though is still subject to misattribution errors. Still, evidence suggests
that emotion can boost memory encoding (Webbe slides). When creating emotional experiences in a story
against a non emotional story, explicit memory was strengthened by emotion (Webbe slides). These factors
influence the way memory of stored, but an effect known as mood congruency of memory effect how
memory is retrieved. This effect states that it is easier to retrieve memories based on our current mood. In
this way, people who are depressed and asked to recall memories will recall sad ones, and people asked to
recall episodic memories from neutral nouns would recall memories that match their current mood states
(Webbe slides). Life stressors can impact the development or retrieval of memory, resulting in distorted or
false memories. This could result from psychological stress or trauma, resulting in functional amnesia.
Additionally, guided imagery or hypnosis recovered memories can be distorted, resulting in false memories
and can make it difficult to distinguish false memories from recovered ones. Emotional memory is

Data Insights Decision making no longer the preserve of middle managers or business analysts occurs
throughout the business, from boardroom to front office.[6] Enterprises need to be able to quickly respond

Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows
The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many similarities with the
introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of both technologies, Moana s color analogue is
Douglas Sirk s melodrama All That Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a point when the art
form is still in between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the technology. Though All That
Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first technicolor films, the movie is still designed to
have the audience notice its beautifully colored shots. Most of the film s landscapes feel oversaturated and
doctored. These exterior shots often feel more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for
the film s interior shots. At the same time, color doesn t define the story and characters in the same way as
early Technicolor films like Michael Curtiz s The Adventures of Robin Hood. In those instances color acted
as a constant signal of where we were in the narrative, and formed strong associations between characters
and individual colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don t drastically change to suit the
narrative, but they re still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color more as an emotional cue,
nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film. Ultimately, All That Heaven Allows is a film made
in the liminal period between astonishment and absorption of color.
Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but ultimately auxiliary
narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and positive parallax were used to create discrete new
worlds. Avatar and Coraline were crafted to feel entirely different when the protagonists ventured into a
different environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood. Moana, on the other hand, uses 3D in a
way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new worlds, Moana uses 3D for the emotional effect,
bringing characters and objects towards and away from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of
the film is not to showcase 3D technology, we can t help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic
sequences like How Far I ll Go. Rather than switching

Philosophy Of A Froebel Classroom
A Froebel classroom shares the ideals of its originator, Friedrich Froebel who originated the idea that
children learn best through play. Play is seen as the avenue for discovery and understanding. These
classrooms are more about open ended play which is not seen as purposeful as much as a means for self
directed comprehension of how things work. Hands on explorations are the hallmark of a Froebel
classroom.
A Reggio Emilia classroom is looked at as a third teacher. The environment is carefully selected, and
extremely important to the philosophy. The materials here are not designed solely for particular concepts, as
they are in a Montessori classroom, but are often plucked from nature with the objective of exploration.

They are seen as competent beings that need to be connected to adults and other children.
In the Montessori Method, it is believed that children have a desire to take care of themselves and their
surroundings and those adults should not serve children as it will ultimately hurt their self esteem and
growth.
A Waldorf philosophy focuses on children as active learners who should not be rushed through their
developmental stages. They are seen as capable, active learners.
Froebel classrooms believe that younger children should be taught much differently than older children and
that through play, they can develop intellectually, spiritually and socially. He believed that children should
be protected from outside influences in a safe and nurturing environment.
Physical Environment
Other differences in the classrooms occur in the physical environment and set up of the space. All four of
these methods believe in including child friendly and developmentally appropriate materials, but the
approach to classroom set up varies.
A Waldorf classroom has the goal of being an extension of the home. The colours are warm and homey and
it is designed to feel like home to the children. The use of natural materials is also a

A League Of Their Own Narrative Analysis
This section employs narrative analysis to the story A League of Their Own in order to highlight the moral
of the film that women have a choice over their future and do not have to be stay at home mothers. Once
again, a story needs a plot with a beginning, middle, and end (Sellnow, 2014, p. 60). Dottie and Kit s story
begins in the small farm town where they work at the dairy and play ball for fun. During a game, a recruiter
takes notice of Dottie, then from there, Dottie and Kit s baseball career takes off. Their upward progression
proves that anything is possible. Tensions run high between sisters Dottie and Kit. Kit hates how good
Dottie is at baseball and does not believe that Dottie wants to even be on the team. All the while, Dottie
does not understand Kit s frustration. Dottie tells Mr. Lowenstein she is leaving if she is not put on another
team. Instead, Kit gets put on another team.
The climax of the story is reached, Dottie and Kit have a critical conversation where they share their true
feelings with one another. It is at this moment that Dottie realizes she really does not know why she is still
in the league. In relevance to the moral, Kit is expressive about her love for baseball, while Dottie seems to
detach herself. She knows that when her husband comes back from the Army, she must go back to him
because, sticking to the bandwagon, Dottie believes she should remain a housewife. Meanwhile, Kit does
trust this outlook on life and she accepts the view that she can choose a different course for her life. During
this confrontation, the audience is able to see the split of ideals of what one s life should reflect. They can
see that Dottie is stuck in the mindset of staying home and raising children, while Kit is up to date with
modern society by understanding that there is so much more to her life than what society says she should
be.
In examination of the text, one of the first steps is to describe the setting (Sellnow, 2014, p. 55). The story
takes place in a small farm town in Oregon where no one really makes anything of themselves. Dottie and
Kit leave this setting to demonstrate that taking chances and following one s dreams can make their life
great. Dottie and Kit go against the norm of

Analysis Of Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, A Russian Author With...
Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, a Russian author with personal experience of labor camp conditions, relates the
experiences of his fellow prisoners by showing the world that humanity can be maintained in the most
degrading of places. Such a theme can be observed closely in his novel One Day in the Life of Ivan
Denisovich, first published in 1962. As the title suggests, the novel is about a day in the Gulag (prison) from
dawn to dusk from Ivan s perspective. The Gulag is designed to strip the Zeks of their individual identities
and dignity. The zek s names are taken from them and replaced by numbers: S 854, The Tartar read from the
white stripe that had been stitched to the back of his black jacket, (15). Then their personal belongings are
taken ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the stance taken by Solzhenitsyn, Ivan maintains his dignity by resisting the idea of indulging himself
with food. In the novel the author raises an important question about whether food is a necessity or valuable
to humanity (dignity). When Ivan recalls a prisoner who talked about the types of Zeks who manage to live:
Those who lick other men s leftovers, those who count on the doctors to pull them through, and those who
squeal on their buddies, (8), he says, do not survive. Though Ivan knows that the prisoners do survive at the
cost of their own humanity, he respects and agrees with most of Kuziomin s statement: You re sure to be
given something to eat there, though there were plenty of others at that game, more than plenty and, what s
worse, if you found a bowl with something left in it you could hardly resist licking it out, (7). For Ivan,
avoiding the mess hall in the morning or after the meal was important, as he might be tempted into leaving
his dignity for a little amount of food. This is a significant step towards conserving his morality and
surviving his sentence. In Solzhenitsyn perspective, keeping away from the food represents the idea of
control over one s body. This is highly significant because living in the Gulag, where the authority treats
zeks in the most dehumanizing of ways, one needs to be able to command themselves, controls their desires
to stay intact their dignity.

My High School Experience In My Middle School
As I exited middle school, it wasn t a smooth transition. In fact, it was more like the ending scene from
Titanic when everyone is jumping ship, hoping that they wouldn t die. Of course, I m over exaggerating, but
it felt exactly like that. I was Rose, a young Kate Winslet, clinging to a unhinged door floating out to sea,
praying for the best. I hoped, even prayed that high school would be better than my middle school
experience. That it would be better than getting beat up into corners and getting called gay slurs. Now I don
t want to write this essay, and have you feel bad for me. I m completely fine. I transferred my self hate into
eating chocolate covered almonds and peanut butter. I m happy with myself, and that s all because of one
experience from high school that changed my life. Imagine me, a freshman in high school, walking to my
third period for acting class. I kind of resembled a mixture of Napoleon Dynamite and Patrick Star. I was so
excited to finally do some theatre. My middle school did not have a theatre department, so all the shows I
did were community run performances. I knew the drama department teacher personally before entering
high school, and he seemed incredibly nice and welcoming. This teacher was my third period, and I couldn t
wait to start class with him. Before I continue the story, I need to preface something. In television and
movies, there s always that one teacher that changes your life. For example, look at Glee. Mr. Schuester is

Loch Ness Monster Myths
The Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as Nessie , is known globally as the cryptozoological lake
monster that lives in Loch Ness. This freshwater lake, which is located in the Scottish Highlands, is
approximately 37 kilometres long, roughly 226 metres deep, and is supposedly home to the large lake
monster named Nessie. (Wikipedia.com/LochNess) This urban legend known as the Loch Ness Monster has
apparently been sighted several times over many hundreds of years. Almost all descriptions of the lake
monster are similar, which leads one to believe that there is definitely something that resides in the Loch.
Nessie has been described as having a giraffe like neck, two humps on her back, a tail, and a snake like
head. She was also identified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many believe that the first report appears in the Life of St. Columba by Adomnan, written in the 7th
century. It states that in 565, Saint Columba heard the story of a man who had been swimming in the River
Ness, when he was attacked by a water beast . After hearing this, the priest asked one of his followers to go
swim across the lake. The beast roared up and tried to attack the man. The priest rose his cross and said
Stop go thou no further nor touch the man which sent the beast back into the lake indefinitely. (Searching
For Nessie) In 1933, construction began very close to Loch Ness. It is believed that the disruption and force
caused by the construction forced the water beast out of the depths and darkness of the bottom of the Loch.
This report was the first published sighting of the Loch Ness Monster. The story appeared on the paper on
May 2nd 1933. Around this time, there were many independent sightings of Nessie. (Myths and Legends) A
year later, in 1934, a photo published by a London surgeon, Kenneth Wilson, depicted a serpent like head
and neck in the body of Loch Ness. This image was thought to have been the best evidence of Nessie for
many years until it was acknowledged decades later as a hoax.

Cushings Syndrome Essay
Cushing s Syndrome
Cushing s Syndrome is a condition that results from chronic exposure to excessive amounts of
glucocorticoids circulating in the blood stream for an extended period of time. The disease was first
reported by Harvey Cushing over one hundred years ago, yet the condition still plagues endocrinologists
today. Reasons for this difficulty include the vast amount of often vague symptoms that the syndrome
presents, most of which are found in a plethora of other conditions as well, combined with the multiple
forms that the condition can manifest itself. Symptoms of Cushings Syndrome include, but are not limited
to, weight gain, hirutism, easy bruising, hypertension, acne, facial plethora, muscle weakness, striae,
depression, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With Cushings syndrome, this cycle is disrupted, resulting in an excess of circulating cortisol. There are
multiple mechanisms that can disrupt the cycle and they can be classified as either ACTH dependent or
ACTH independent Cushings Syndrome. The most common form of Cushings Syndome is an ACTH
dependent form called Cushings Disease. This type accounts for two thirds of cushings syndrome and is the
result of either an adenoma or carcinoma on the pituitary gland. The tumor causes overproduction of ACTH,
resulting in increased release of cortisol from the adrenal gland. ACTH dependent Cushings Syndrome can
also result from ectopic tumors that cause overproduction of ACTH or CRH. The most frequent is small cell
lung carcinoma (12% of patients develop Cushings syndrome). A final type of ACTH dependent cushings
syndrome is from exogenous ACTH administration, typically the use of synthetic steroids. ACTH
independent Cushings Syndrome typically originates from abnormalities of the adrenal gland. Adrenal
adenoma and adrenal carcinoma occur when there is a benign or cancerous tumor on the adrenal gland.
These tumors can cause over production of cortisol, disrupting homeostasis. Other diseases like Carney
complex and McCune Albright syndrome have also been associated with abnormalities of the adrenal gland,
causing overproduction of cortisol. A final form of cushings syndrome is exogenous glucocorticoid
administration.

Poetry Makes a Man in Dead Poets Society Essay
Poetry Makes a Man When people take poetry as more than just words with meanings, but as words to live
by and take the poem to heart, the person may and will change by the words they live on. The type of poetry
will affect the way the person changes. In the very inspirational movie of Dead Poets Society, Tom
Schulman the screen writer, through the character of the visionary Mr. Keating: uses plays and poetry to
help the major characters and even some minor characters through their dilemmas and any situations that
could have applied to these inspired characters to think freely and take a new road in life. Major characters
such as Neil, Todd, Knox, Charlie, and Cameron have taken the influential poetic teachings of Mr. Keating
to heart and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With Neil s father still being mad and frustrated, everything goes south and Neil has his Carpe diem
moment when the whole family discussed about his future, but not having as much confidence towards his
father as his peers, Neil decides not to take the moment and leaves us speechless on his next action. Todd
was the character that was the most affected by Mr. Keating s poetic teachings; the viewers could even say
poetry makes a man based on Todd s improvements. At the beginning of the movie, Todd has a moment,
when we understand and may even pity Todd because he says that no one would listen to him and he was
not the leading type. The poem of O Me! O Life! greatly resembled Todd s situation. In the poem the
audience hears of a narrator who is suffering through life and the audience feels despair, but then the
audience hears there is an answer! The answer being that we are here and contribute a verse, showed that
there is hope after all and that Todd can be more than just a person who is suffering through life with no
confidence. This poem initiated the confidence and the Carpe diem also helped Todd to not only have
confidence, but to be a leader that the viewers can admire. Also showing that Todd had changed was the fact
that in the beginning of the movie, Todd was the last one to stand on the desk, and see things from a
different perspective, and address Mr. Keating as O Captain! My Captain! , which is also a poem. In the
middle of the movie the

Informative Essay About Beer
Every Wednesday at Terrace Club, we take part in wedding of sorts...the marriage of our Tastes of the World
menu and Fine Beer Wednesday. This year, Chef Rick and I have worked hand in hand with Guillermo
Martinez Cabalga 17 and Jack Hollingsworth 17 otherwise known as the Beer Chairs to pair the Wednesday
dining room menu with its beer counterparts in the tap room. So far, the marriage seems strong and appears
to be in a permanent honeymoon phase.
In the last five years, there s been a paradigm shift: beer has made it onto the menu as more than an
afterthought. Beer, like wine, has a unique ability to complement the flavors of all kinds of foods. As a
result, beer sommeliers have popped up in cities across the country, including Los Angeles,

Hauna Loa Research Paper
Hauna Loa
Hawaii a huge tourist hotspot due to its lovable culture and beautiful landscape, is home to the volcano
Hauna Loa, considered the largest volcano on the earth, located on the island of Hawaii which also holds
four others is currently sleeping after its rude awakening roughly thirty years ago but it s not certain when
she might erupt again. Mauna Loa takes us more than half, due to technology that has been so fine tuned
that it could predict an eruption months before the actual event. There was a scare about ten years ago
where scientist believed it could definitely erupt due to the amount of magma going into the magma
chamber, but miraculously the magma camber was expanded and created more room for the magma to
collect in. Another eruption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the largest occurred back in 1868 and ended up being an estimated 8.0 magnitude, created landslides
that buried houses and cattle in the Ka u district of the island. At least 79 people were killed in the
subsequent tsunami that resulted from the earthquake. In 1951, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake produced minor
damage in the South Kona area to structures and catchment tanks. A 1983 earthquake led to $7 million in
damage to roads and structures in the Ka u, Puna and Hilo districts. A city that was almost destroyed during
one of its last eruptions on the island.
Mauna Loa is considered a shield volcano meaning its eruption are as violent as they could be, however
because of its enormous size, it will still be a reckoning, like journalist James Cave says, Of the five active
volcanoes in Hawaii, only the Kilauea and Loihi volcanoes have been quietly erupting consistently for
decades. But Mauna Loa is seen as the big threat there. What Kilauea erupts in one day, Mauna Loa has
erupted in 20 minutes, as it did in 1984. It came way too close to destroying Hilo, where more than 35,000
people lived at the

| Task: Critically Review the text Was Development Assistance a Mistake | | A Critical Review of Easterly,
W 2007, Was Development Assistance a Mistake?, American Economics Review, 97(2), pp 328 332.
Foreign aid focuses on promoting economic and human development ( Williamson, R 2009).Many experts
attempt to possess the knowledge and skill to help poor nations. The key theme of Was Development
Assistance a mistake? is Easterly s argument, how development assistance fails to achieve economic
development in poor nations. In this context, Easterly discusses the efforts of development experts that try
to boost economic growth in various poor countries. He criticizes the development experts and ... Show

Collier support this by stating that development should deal with four aspects: the conflict, the natural
resources, the trap of being landlocked with bad neighbors, and the trap of bad governance in a small
country (Collier 2007, p.5).These issues can be obstacles to development because all of those aspects are
interconnected to each others. Economists and policy makers, especially the World Bank should be
acknowledged that different countries have different characteristics. Their one formula might bring about
different results. For instance, development experts adopted development policies from successful countries
such as the East Asian tigers to apply in Africa but it still fails to achieve development ( Easterly 2007,
p.328 ). For these reasons, development experts should consider other aspects before applying their
masterful policies to develop poor countries. Individual success stories might become tomorrow s failures.
Second, the author concludes that economic growth without development assistance is generally involved in
homegrown movement. With this statement, the author seems to indicate the homegrown strategy as a
potential for effective development in poor countries. Rodrik (2001, p.45) maintains that economic
development ultimately derives from a home grown strategy, and not from the world market... . It can be
said that his argument is reasonable. Development experts should take

  • 2. Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment Running Head: SEPSIS DETECTION AND TREATMENT Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment Steven H. Gregory Chamberlain College of Nursing March28, 2009 Sepsis Early Detection and Treatment Severe Sepsis affects 750,000 Americans and causes more than 200,000 deaths annually. Sepsis is a complex condition that results from an infectious process that represents the body s response to infection and involves systemic inflammatory and cellular events that result in altered circulation and coagulation, endothelial dysfunction and impaired tissue perfusion (Kleinpell, 2005). Associated mortality rates with sepsis in the United States have remained largely unchanged for several decades. Through an international collaboration known as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Treatment of Sepsis As stated in Rivers, Nguyed, Havstad, Ressler, Muzzin, Knolich et al. (2001): Early hemodynamic assessment on the basis of physical findings, vital signs, central venous pressure, and urinary output fails to detect persistent global tissue hypoxia. A more definitive resuscitation strategy involves goal oriented manipulation of cardiac preload, afterload, and contractility to achieve a balance between systemic oxygen delivery and oxygen demand. End points used to confirm the achievement of such a balance (hereafter called resuscitation end points) include normalized values for mixed venous oxygen saturation, arterial lactate concentration, base deficit, and pH. Mixed venous oxygen saturation has been shown to be a surrogate for the cardiac index as a target for hemodynamic therapy. In cases in which the insertion of a pulmonary artery catheter is impractical, venous oxygen saturation can be measured in the central circulation (p. 1368). The focus for the general care nurse outside of the ICU is to be able to recognize sepsis and to initiate appropriate interventions in an appropriate amount of time. Nurses need to facilitate the transfer of the patient to an ICU as urgently as possible. Once sepsis is suspected, it is important to closely monitor patients for signs and symptoms of progression with increasing frequency of assessments. While awaiting transfer of a patient to the ICU ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fifth Business Quotes In the novel, Fifth Business by Robertson Davies, Dunstan Ramsey s life choices are greatly impacted by his guilt. At the young age of ten years old, Dunstan s life was changed by association with a traumatic experience, Mrs. Dempster, a pregnant woman, was hit by an incoming snowball thrown by Percy Boyd Staunton meant for Dunstan. This snowball caused Mrs. Dempster to go into labour, 80 days before she was supposed to, as well as causing life changing brain damage. Mrs. Dempster was forever labelled as simple by the people of the town. Percy showed no emotion towards this event ever occurring and because Dunstan felt someone should be responsible for this incident, he put the blame on himself. As a Presbyterian, a simple fix to his guilt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Kidnapped Character Analysis Kidnapped, the first book in a two part series by Robert Louis Stevenson, follows a recently orphaned seventeen year old as he attempts both mentally and physically to survive the time after his father s death. He first attempts to go to Ebenezer Balfour s home, and he is met by an uncle who had a falling out with his father over his mother. His uncle gives him an old, destroyed room to stay in with broken windows; he then tricks him to board Captain Hoseason s ship while in town shopping so that he can sell David into slavery. Aboard the Covenant, David is treated poorly until he becomes the new cabin boy for the ship. The ship wrecks onto the Isle of Earraid in Scotland; he and Alan Stewart are the only survivors, but he does not realize this until happening upon a house on an island nearby. They meet up and journey whilst encountering many problems along the way. Eventually, David makes his way back to the town of Queensferry, his uncle s home. Throughout Kidnapped, he is met with hostility and violent situations from place to place along his journey whether his change in location is intentional or forced. Setting affects the emotional and physical wellbeing of David Balfour in Kidnapped as shown through his response to his multiple changes in environment, location, and caregivers. One way in which the settings affects David s mental and physical health is by the different environments in which he is placed. David is faced with the necessity of fighting for his own life ... • 5. Essay On Your Daughter Dances Flamenco A red and black swirl, that s how it all started. I remember it like it was yesterday. My mother and I were standing in line at a frame shop. There was a girl with a black leotard and a red flowy skirt standing in front of us, with her mother. Your daughter dances Flamenco, right? Where does she take classes? My mother asked the girl s mother. Next thing I remember, I was in a dance studio, staring at a group of dancers who seemed to be flying across the room, all wearing long skirts and dance shoes. I couldn t take my eyes off of them. I didn t know it right then, but fourteen years later, I would be able to dance just like any of those dancers I was staring at with dreamy eyes. Practicing dance, preparing dance plays and performances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I can relate dancing to playing in two different ways. The first one, of course, whenever I am dancing I can certainly feel like I am playing a game. By this I don t mean that I don t take dance seriously. For the contrary, I enjoy dance to a level where I feel just like when I am playing a videogame. Each new step I have to learn, represents a new challenge. Once I am able to correctly perform said step, I have to keep practicing until I can perform it perfectly, then I can move on to the next step. Once a choreography is complete, we, as dancers, are supposed to rehearse it over and over again until we feel as confident as we can in order to be able to perform it in the theatre. Reaching that point for me is like defeating the boss in a Mario Bros. game. One can say the turtles, owls, and other enemies in the game could be represented by blisters, twisted ankles, mistakes committed, and some other challenges we may encounter while trying to master a piece of choreography. The other way I can relate dance to play, which is kind of the most obvious one, are dance plays. Last year, I played the role of Anastasia Romanov at the Foro de Arte y Cultura in Guadalajara, Mexico. At some points it did, in fact, feel like I was playing pretend. I wore a costume that looked exactly like what Anastasia wore in the animated movie and dyed my hair copper. Of course, I watched the movie probably a hundred times trying to ... • 6. Education Policies And The Greens Social wellbeing is contingent upon equitable social policy addressing all varieties of demographics and needs. One highly contested social policy issue in Aotearoa is that of tertiary education. Tertiary education policies are proposed by multiple parties, however the most contentious of these can be drawn from the Greens and ACT who hold highly opposing social wellbeing ideologies. Essentially, to reveal binary oppositions between these policies, market and state ideologies must be considered, in addition to the opposing views of individualism and collectivism which form the cornerstone of how social wellbeing will be met. Moreover, the differences ACT and the Greens see in what tertiary education should offer, ultimately reveal their opposing ideologies in policy, and their perspectives towards social wellbeing. Act and the Greens both agree that Aotearoa as a country in the developed world should face minimal social inequalities, however they hold vastly different opinions on how this should be achieved. By comparing ACT who hold market beliefs to the Greens who hold state beliefs it is increasingly evident that extreme beliefs drawn from either end of the political spectrum pose significant problems in meeting social milestones. Market beliefs are often viewed as conservative and in the field of postcompulsory education and training... place the responsibility for educational participation and success on the individual rather than the government (Bowl Tobias as ... • 7. Rational Choice Theory Essay There are three main points that are reinforced in rational choice theory (Cornish and Clarke, 1986). First, it may work better or worse for different types of crime, yet it is thought that there are rational choices in every type of crime even impulsive and pathologic crimes. Second, the theory should be applied on a crime specific basis. Hence, burglaries can t be grouped together in among residential and commercial categories. Rather, they must be broken into smaller facets such as public housing burglaries or wealthy residential neighborhoods. Finally, a distinction is made between criminal involvement and criminal events. Criminal involvement describes how individuals get involved in crime and further continue or abstain from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The later occurs when a specific offender is deterred from crime through sanctions. Thus, the benefits and drawbacks of crime have sway with both deterrence and rational choice theories, but rational choice doesn t make headway for a population as a whole or limit the individual to those previously punished. The strengths of the rational choice theory are also seen when comparing it to the routine activity theory, which proposes that three elements are needed for crime: motivated offenders, suitable targets, and the absence of capable guardians (Cohen and Felson, 1979). Hence, environmental conditions must be right for crime to occur. This relates to one similarity of the rational choice theory, which is the account for situational variables such as the likelihood of punishment (Cornish and Clarke, 1986). In contrast, routine activity theory doesn t look at why the individual commits crime (Cohen and Felson, 1979). Instead, this propensity is assumed, while the rational choice theory looks specifically at the reasons individuals commit offenses. The broken windows theory reduces the cause of crime to the amount of disorder in a community (Wilson and Kelling, 1982). Basically, if there are broken windows in buildings it can result in allowing more vandalism, which leads more riff raff on the streets. This creates a fear for citizens to go out in the neighborhood, which limits the visibility of proactive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Slumdog Millionaire shows Jamal s slumdog childhood as an exciting adventure, carefree, always finding ways to acquire food or money, and narrowly escaping punishment for his deviant acts every time; however, the reality of childhood in the slum is better illustrated in Boo s book since it expose the danger of problems such as hunger, illness and childhood deviance. Behind the Beautiful Forevers describes numerous children s tragic death due to the pressures of their hardship and social injustice. Sometimes leading them to unjust death on the road without clear cause. For example, Sanjay, a young boy in the slum was pressured to end his life after he thought that he was going to be captured and tortured by police or killed by gangsters for being a witness to a crime. Boo described, [Sanjay] was convulsing on the floor. Pulling Sanjay up, thinking that he was having a seizure, his mother caught a chemical reek on his breath. His sister retrieved a white plastic bottle from the corner of the room...But the empty plastic bottle was rat poison...He lived for two hours after reaching the public hospital (Boo 171 72). Colonisation, transnational corporations, and environmental degradation can act as a catalyst to struggle for their rights as seen in Bougainville or concepts that impede their struggle. The concept inherent to IPs legal issues is that national governments see it purely as a domestic issue. International instruments such as treaties and conventions are bilateral or multilateral agreements between states governed by intemational laws which are binding. The International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights mentions self determination and are is signed by many states such as Australia. Some bilateral treaties were also signed between colonisers and IPs such as the Treaty of Waitangi (1840) but were biased, unenforceable and not recognised under international law. Declarations are statements of principles but are not binding. An example is the Draft Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples created by Working Group on Indigenous Populations (WGIP). • 16. Emotion, Memory, And Decision Making Emotional arousal appears to have a huge effect on processing, memory, and decision making. For memories specifically, we tend to rehearse and review episodes of intense emotions frequently, allowing them to be stronger and more relevant memories (Gluck, 2014). Flashbulb memories suggest that emotion can greatly increase memory coding, though is still subject to misattribution errors. Still, evidence suggests that emotion can boost memory encoding (Webbe slides). When creating emotional experiences in a story against a non emotional story, explicit memory was strengthened by emotion (Webbe slides). These factors influence the way memory of stored, but an effect known as mood congruency of memory effect how memory is retrieved. This effect states that it is easier to retrieve memories based on our current mood. In this way, people who are depressed and asked to recall memories will recall sad ones, and people asked to recall episodic memories from neutral nouns would recall memories that match their current mood states (Webbe slides). Life stressors can impact the development or retrieval of memory, resulting in distorted or false memories. This could result from psychological stress or trauma, resulting in functional amnesia. Additionally, guided imagery or hypnosis recovered memories can be distorted, resulting in false memories and can make it difficult to distinguish false memories from recovered ones. • 19. Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many similarities with the introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of both technologies, Moana s color analogue is Douglas Sirk s melodrama All That Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a point when the art form is still in between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the technology. Though All That Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first technicolor films, the movie is still designed to have the audience notice its beautifully colored shots. Most of the film s landscapes feel oversaturated and doctored. These exterior shots often feel more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for the film s interior shots. At the same time, color doesn t define the story and characters in the same way as early Technicolor films like Michael Curtiz s The Adventures of Robin Hood. In those instances color acted as a constant signal of where we were in the narrative, and formed strong associations between characters and individual colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don t drastically change to suit the narrative, but they re still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color more as an emotional cue, nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film. Ultimately, All That Heaven Allows is a film made in the liminal period between astonishment and absorption of color. Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but ultimately auxiliary narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and positive parallax were used to create discrete new worlds. Avatar and Coraline were crafted to feel entirely different when the protagonists ventured into a different environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood. Moana, on the other hand, uses 3D in a way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new worlds, Moana uses 3D for the emotional effect, bringing characters and objects towards and away from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of the film is not to showcase 3D technology, we can t help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic sequences like How Far I ll Go. Rather than switching ... • 23. A League Of Their Own Narrative Analysis This section employs narrative analysis to the story A League of Their Own in order to highlight the moral of the film that women have a choice over their future and do not have to be stay at home mothers. Once again, a story needs a plot with a beginning, middle, and end (Sellnow, 2014, p. 60). Dottie and Kit s story begins in the small farm town where they work at the dairy and play ball for fun. During a game, a recruiter takes notice of Dottie, then from there, Dottie and Kit s baseball career takes off. Their upward progression proves that anything is possible. Tensions run high between sisters Dottie and Kit. Kit hates how good Dottie is at baseball and does not believe that Dottie wants to even be on the team. All the while, Dottie does not understand Kit s frustration. Dottie tells Mr. Lowenstein she is leaving if she is not put on another team. Instead, Kit gets put on another team. The climax of the story is reached, Dottie and Kit have a critical conversation where they share their true feelings with one another. It is at this moment that Dottie realizes she really does not know why she is still in the league. In relevance to the moral, Kit is expressive about her love for baseball, while Dottie seems to detach herself. She knows that when her husband comes back from the Army, she must go back to him because, sticking to the bandwagon, Dottie believes she should remain a housewife. Meanwhile, Kit does trust this outlook on life and she accepts the view that she can choose a different course for her life. During this confrontation, the audience is able to see the split of ideals of what one s life should reflect. They can see that Dottie is stuck in the mindset of staying home and raising children, while Kit is up to date with modern society by understanding that there is so much more to her life than what society says she should be. In examination of the text, one of the first steps is to describe the setting (Sellnow, 2014, p. 55). Such a theme can be observed closely in his novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, first published in 1962. Though Ivan knows that the prisoners do survive at the cost of their own humanity, he respects and agrees with most of Kuziomin s statement: You re sure to be given something to eat there, though there were plenty of others at that game, more than plenty and, what s worse, if you found a bowl with something left in it you could hardly resist licking it out, (7). For Ivan, avoiding the mess hall in the morning or after the meal was important, as he might be tempted into leaving his dignity for a little amount of food. This is a significant step towards conserving his morality and surviving his sentence. In Solzhenitsyn perspective, keeping away from the food represents the idea of control over one s body.
