In fact it relates to data so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools or traditional data processing applications, which I would say also applies • The trend to larger data sets, known as big data, is due to the additional information derivable from analysis of a single large set of related data, as compared to separate smaller sets with the same total amount of data, allowing correlations to be found to "spot business trends, determine quality of research, prevent diseases, link legal citations, combat crime, and determine real-time roadway traffic conditions" • So why in general terms do we not consider seismic data - big data is it the way it is acquired, recorded or used? data? Jill Lewis, Managing Director, Troika International 9.50 Should E&P Companies Have a Chief Data Scientist? • Tying the value of using predictive analytics on big data sets from offshore equipment. • Who owns the sensor data? The changing business model for asset integrity. • Is there enough boardroom visibility for the value of data as an asset and resource? • What competencies are required in E&P to groom and train the next generation of big data scientists? Jess Kozman, Regional Manager, E&P Applications - Information, Mubadala Petroleum 10.30 Morning Coffee 11.00 Big data at the British Geological Survey • BGS Holds a large amount of data for the E & P Sector • BGS is building relationships to digitise analogue holdings • There have been notable advances in scientific understanding through the integration and modelling of these data • Global partnerships for the acquisition and management of these data form a key part of our future strategy Matthew Harrison, Director of Informatics,    British Geological Survey 11.40 Sharing knowledge, or just sharing data? • Analytics can identify useful patterns and relationships but they must be based on solid and reliable foundations - Garbage In, Garbage Out is as true as it ever was • Sharing data, let alone integrating data, will only help your business if the purpose for the sharing is clear; it is not just a question of technology or algorithms • The crucial need is for shared understanding, first of terminology, then of interpretation, then of action John S Edwards, Professor of Knowledge Management, Aston Business School 12.20 Networking lunch BIG DATA MANAGEMENT 1.30 Decisions from data: the importance of quality, trust and quantified uncertainty • Effective management of data is not just about software, processes and people, although these are necessary conditions • Using data to make decisions means weighing evidence, often using models and other tools • Effective data management needs to also embrace data quality • Data quality includes provenance information and traditional metadata, quantified uncertainty, and peer review • This talk reviews the state of the art in data quality for scientific applications and suggests framework for managing data quality in E&P Dan Cornford, Reader, Computer Science, Aston University 2.10 Laying the foundation for integrated data management • Define a Target Operating Model • Develop Implementation Scope and Approach • Navigating Dependencies and Defining a Starting Point • Managing the Transition to Operate Troy Christensen, E&P Backbone Data Director, Top 5 integrated Energy Company 2.50 Afternoon Tea 3.20 Efficient and effective management and delivery of vast seismic data sets • Moving from tapes in warehouses • Targeting "right first time" data exchange • Speeding up the processes • Online delivery - is it feasible yet? Alan Smith, Principle Consultant, Luchelan 4.00 Big Data in geophysics • Real time & off line data management • Diverse data integration • Automatic versus manual operations • Redundancy options Dr. Damiano Pesaresi, Researcher, National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) 4.40 Chairman’s Closing Remarks and Close of Day Two
  4. 4. Overview of workshop: This workshop will cover emerging trends and new technology developments around massive scale analytics and data management automation. While there is a lot hype surrounding “big data” we will take a pragmatic approach in examining the challenges and opportunities facing the upstream petroleum industry and use this session to explore interesting use cases for exploration and production workflows. Who should attend: Obtain cutting edge insights about new ways of applying emerging technologies. Step outside of the traditional E&P box to understand how other industries are being transformed by big data and cloud services. Programme: 08.30 Registration and Coffee 09.00 Opening Remarks 09.10 Introduction to big data concepts and industry state of the art 09.50 Sources of E&P data - where it comes from and how it flows through the organization 10.30 Morning Coffee 11.00 Custodianship - privacy, confidentiality, traceability & veracity 11.40 Future use cases for E&P workflows 12.20 Closing Remarks 12.30 End of Workshop About the workshop leader Matthew D. Smith started his career in the electricity industry, working on power distribution network metering and telecontrol network applications before moving into the upstream Oil & Gas industry where he has focused on developing and operating global scale IT infrastructures aimed at automating and improving the efficiency of business processes. About fieldcloud SAS fieldcloud SAS is a young, dynamic company that provides connectivity-enabled products and services to automate and maximize the value of oilfield production data. our current hardware product the ns-box is a small form factor microserver appliance which provides a flexible and powerful processing platform to aggregate the edge of the oilfield cloud and internet of things. 5. 5. Overview of workshop: This workshop will enable people to go hands-on and see live data running in real world. We will experience what companies have in-house and whether "Big Data" is applicable to seismic and associated data. The data volumes are huge and the datatypes continue to expand with new technology. As an industry that already has historic data issues how do we address new demands such as Life of Field and MicroSeismic and is it “Big Data”. Who should attend: With many companies outsourcing data management and not having the ability to check the results to see what is really going on. Without some sort of knowledge it is like any task you really do not know what is happening. There is much talk of Big Data but does it fit into seismic data management. We will have tape drives, experts, software to play with and invite you to.... BRING RANDOM FILES OF SEISMIC DATA ON DISK OR TAPE. Programme: 13.00 Registration and Coffee 13.30 Opening Remarks 13.40 Update SEG format 14.10 Hands on data, tapes and disc. 15.10 Afternoon Tea 15.40 Does seismic fit into ‘big data’? 16.20 Options for large volume storage of Seismic Libraries 16.50 Closing Remarks 17.00 End of Workshop About the workshop leader Jill Lewis is a master of seismic data problems, and has invaluable expertise in the industry dealing with a variety of issues. Jill was chair of the SEG Technical Standards Committee from 1998-2002, and is known for giving excellent presentations around the globe. Her valuable input can aid in updating your seismic data to conform to new SEG data formats, providing valuable data management techniques that allows you to capitalize on your data assets, and countless other consultancy services to make your data investments as profitable as possible. About Troika Troika is a Global Seismic Software Company that deals with all varieties of seismic data formats. Troika provides comprehensive consultancy and detailed analysis to satisfy costly and time consuming data management issues.
