A simple model for reputation is presented: reputation is information used to make value judgments about a person or thing within a context for a time.
Each of the concepts are discussed in some detail, and finally a simple example is presented (traffic estimates on Google Maps for Android) that demonstrates the model at work, and how to use it to make system design improvements.

Explicit Inputs
17. Information
Perils of explicit inputs
• Don’t design your system input- rst. Fads come and go.
• They invite gaming
• Particularly problematic when people are the object
being rated
• May introduce strange social pathologies
22. Information

23. Value Person(s)
Judgments
n
Value judgments are about
Value.
24. Value Person(s)
Judgments
n Of the Object:
• Is this good?
• Will I enjoy it?
• Is it worth the next 2 mins 37 seconds?
• Will it meet my needs for this context?
• Is something else better?
• And so on…
25. Value Person(s)
Judgments
n Of the Source:
• Who made this?
• Do I trust them?
• What was their intent?
• Will this harm me? My computer? My
phone?!
27. Value Person(s)
Judgments
n Of the system:
• Am I con dent that the information
presented is accurate?
• Up to date?
• Not tampered with? Or gamed?

People May Have…
• Contributor Reputations
How much do people like their ‘stuff?’
• Performance Reputations
Wins v. Losses
• Moderator Reputations
When they mod something up or down, are
they usually “right?”

What things are good reputable
objects?
• Interesting
• High decision investment
• Some intrinsic value worth enhancing
• Has a useful lifespan
43. Reputations: Destination Arrival,
Traffic Interference
Information: Score (Time
Estimate); Levels (Red, Green,
Yellow Traffic Estimates, by
Segment & Overall); Badges
(Accident Locations)
Judgments: Will I make it on
time? Is my commute gonna
suck? Just how screwed am I?
Objects: A Route; A number of
‘Segments’
… oh, and some other drivers.
Context: Route 101, driving up
the Bay Area peninsula, at Rush
Hour. For the next 1 hr, 12
minutes.
44. Judgments: Will I make it on
time? Is my commute gonna
suck? Just how screwed am I?
Says who?
How reliable is this information?
How current is it?
Thank You.
