National Student Survey ‘Assessment & Feedback’ is the lowest area of student satisfaction in all surveys since 2005, regardless of institution, background, or course. ‘The great NUS feedback amnesty” 2010

2009 National Student Survey (NSS) “Students were significantly less satisfied about the feedback that they received than their overall learning experience”

Many institutions are relying on feedback mechanisms that are appropriate to the quality assurance and audit systems of contemporary Higher Education but not to the needs of students.

Initial findings suggest that the viewer (students) reads the assessment sheet in a traditional direction, and does not ‘search’ for the grade first.

Conclusion To improve the student experience of assessment feedback, UWN should consider the re-design of the standard assessment sheet in order to support the needs of the student and not the efficiencyof the assessor.

The session will include a brief overview of the statistical trends in part-time admissions to HE, a presentation on the approaches used in Aimhigher to track learners and the impact of Aimhigher interventions on their progress and discussion of research methods and the uses of data for targeting. Questions will be raised about the ways in which researchers and practitioners frame an oppositional discourse and could do things differently. This presentation will focus on the use of an eportfolio (PebblePad) to provide timely formative feedback on long case histories in seven clinical schools across the University of Sydney Medical Program. A common complaint from students and residents is that they are not given enough feedback in the clinical setting. This project was designed to offer feedback on written cases and, in addition, to gather data on who was actually viewing the presentations of long cases in the clinical setting. From 2015, a required formative assessment was introduced, consisting of eight long cases which were presented orally (with immediate feedback given by a supervisor or other staff), then written up and submitted via Pebblepad. Formative assessment was provided by a Medical Lead in each clinical school also via the eportfolio. Students had the option of reflecting on their written cases.

This paper presents the findings from an evaluatory pedagogical project that utilised an ethnographic case study approach to examine factors influencing the use of online formative assessment and feedback within an undergraduate programme. The project posed the questions: â€¢ What are the effects of introducing online formative assessment and feedback on learning and assessment performance? â€¢ How effective is online formative feedback in enhancing student success? The study draws upon data collected from a sample of students (22) who volunteered to participate in the research over a period of one academic year. Data collection tools included: focus group interview, semi-structured questionnaire and student assessment data. The study demonstrates that formative feedback and assessment is beneficial for teaching and learning, and that electronic assessment can offer a more flexible approach that can complement f2f feedback. Online formative feedback in the context of this study had a positive effect upon academic performance and student satisfaction, and demonstrates that students find online formative feedback effective and meaningful. Whilst the small size of the sample influences generalizability, the findings agree with the wealth of literature surrounding formative assessment and the benefits that accrue to students from delivering effective feedback. In addition, evidence from participants in this study is reflected in reports such as the JISC guide: â€œEffective Assessment in a Digital Ageâ€ (2010) and the findings from the EBEAM Project (2012) (Ellis, 2012).

This article is an ongoing doctoral research and it aims to compare academics’ perceptions of quality assurance mechanisms for ensuring undergraduate student learning outcomes between Taiwan and England. Since 2012, the Foundation for Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (2013) has been conducting the second 5-year cycle of higher education evaluation. The aim of this evaluation is to examine the mechanisms and practice of each department and graduate school for ensuring their student learning outcomes. The issue of student learning outcomes is an important trend in the global higher education, but some challenges must be dealt with in Taiwan during the processes of policy borrowing (Phillips, 2009) since the new policy mainly refers experience to the UK’s quality assurance and the US’s accreditation systems. The primary challenges are the construction and implementation of the quality assurance mechanisms for learning outcomes in each university, and it has been argued that some implicit and non-cognitive learning outcomes are difficult to assess (Chen, 2013). The empirical research is a comparative case study involving two purposively selected universities in England and Taiwan. In-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 academics in each country. Most participants work in the field of education and they are at the different levels- university, faculty and department. It is supposed that academics’ perceptions could be different between the two countries, and academics within the same university could differ in their viewpoints on this issue. Also, public meeting minutes and internal quality assurance policies about student learning outcomes within the two universities were analysed. The initial findings of this study will be presented and discussed, including the similarities and differences of quality assurance mechanisms for ensuring learning outcomes between the two countries. Another focus of discussion will be on academics’ positive and negative perceptions of the implementation and influences of the mechanisms and their suggestions for the improvements of the systems.

The primary goal of this research was to investigate AOU students' conceptions of the quality of online experience through the learning management system in supporting their classroom tutorials. A 32-item questionnaire was administered to a randomly selected sample (205) of Elementary Education students at the AOU Jordan Branch. On one hand, the results showed that the objectives of the courses were very clear to students, online materials on the learning management system were interesting and supported to classroom learning, students preferred online quizzes, the online materials supported key assessment tasks and tutors provided continuous access to relevant information about assessment. On the other hand, the findings revealed that the online materials and e-activities were too loaded for the students to understand thoroughly, and much of the feedback they received from the tutor was not helpful. The results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences among students’ views of BL or their overall satisfaction of the online experience that could be attributed to gender or academic achievement level. Results suggest some pedagogical implications for tutors and programmer coordinators.

This study aimed at analysing the factors that contribute to low student success and retention in open and distance learning (ODL) institutions. The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU), Mashonaland East Regional Centre was purposively selected for the study which adopted the case study design in order to provide a detailed empirical investigation of the problem of retention rates in ZOU. The study employed the qualitative research methodology. Data were gathered through focus group discussions, questionnaires and in-depth interviews to enable data triangulation. The target population was 650 students who all took part in the survey. These were drawn from all the four faculties of the University at the Mashonaland East Regional Centre. The study revealed that student enrolment statistics at the ZOU - Mashonaland East Regional Centre experienced the worst decline (40%) in 2009 between the first and second semester due to socio-economic and political challenges prevailing in the country. The rate of decline in enrolment varied according to programmes. Also the participation of women (44%) in distance education as compared to men (56%) at Mashonaland East Regional Centre was a cause for concern. Financial challenges caused by low salaries and unfriendly fees policy was cited by almost 92% of the respondents as the major cause of student dropout. Institutional – related factors such as tutoring, communication, library services and fees policy were said to be significantly contributing to student dropout. The study made a number of recommendations among which were that ZOU needs to improve the quality and effectiveness of student support services in the following areas: management of assignments, delivery of tutorials, distribution of study materials, and publication of examinations. Tutorial time per module should be increased (12 tutorial hours per module). ZOU should consider the advantages of the Block release method of delivery as opposed to tutorials. Student queries, of whatever nature, must be addressed promptly and effectively. It is also important for ZOU to create a billing system that will allow for some flexibility in fees payment. An example would be allowing students to set up a payment plan. ZOU must adopt policies and procedures that address the special needs of distance education students since distance education encompasses a broad range of age groups.
