Steph\nClaire has just talked about our intentions. from this we then had to look at the practicalities of how this day would run within our school. We believed that the students should be focussed on the developing of the presentations, tutoring and learning to present so as teacher we took lead in the organisation of the day. Of course students had input into organisational aspects at many stages but predominantly it was a teacher role. \n\nIn the morning we had our two contributing schools and in the afternoon we had our cluster schools\nwhat we did also was invite the local media to come and share the day with our students our students really enjoyed talking to them but felt after reading the article didn’t really understand the enormatiy of what they had done.\n\nComing up is a snapshot of the day.\n

Steph\nJust because the students were taking their own journey towards their goal, this did not mean the teachers got to sit back, relax and check our email.\nWe worked closely with our students and one way we did this was by firstly developing a planning template for the students to use, they knew what they wanted to share with the students but they needed some help to put it in some form of order. We modeled this plan on our schools format eg learning intentions and the subsequent success criteria.\nWe still had to look at our assessment and we focussed on the key competencies throughout this process, and as a part of this students reflections were based around the key competencies. what they were doing well and what they would like to improve and how they might do this.\nOne of our most important roles was working with the students to give feedback and feedforward to help them develop their presentations. \nResources within a school are always a debated topic especially e-Learning tools. The teachers that wanted to ensure the succcess of their students begged, borrowed and negotiated access over a long period of time, the students needed to use the tools they were going to use on the day this meant. practicing using the data projectors as they would be using these on the day, how to set them up, and working with all the practicalities of the organisation of equipment on the day. \nAll your students are at different levels for some the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills is as natural as breathing so our aim was to ensure we were helping these students push themselves further and for some what we were asking them to do meant that they were taking significant leaps out of their comfort zone, its not easy getting up in front of a group of strangers and presenting...as we are beginnign to realise and I am sure if we were to do this again we would have a lot more empathy. I must say over all, all students went above and beyond the expectations.\nNot only did the students work closly with each other the teachers across the syndicates had to work with each other to make this day a success. Not everyone was coming in with the same skill set and even the same phyilosophy toward e learning, however, the beauty of working with others on a project like this that people like dave behree can follow his passion of developing the e-conference aspect and Julie the market side. \n\n

Steph:\nWhere do I start with the positives for the student. \nAt times we did wonder how the day was going to go many a times jolted awake in the middle of the night, but we knew our students had put the work in and that they just need to do it. Everywhere you looked on the day we saw our students engaged, leading the learning, problem solving, using initiative. The students were empowered they were proud of how they had worked and what they had produced because they had worked towards this...they exceeded our expectations, and there was such a feel such a feel good factor after their presentation that they made a difference. I would like to tell you about Grace, this is her here. Take on a mentoring role with others that she was unable to do with kids of her own age within the school.\nPossible claire - Josh winston lee.\n

Steph: now is your opportunity if you have access to the internet to go and have an explore of the wiki we also have some hard copies of aspects of the process.\n\nI hope you have had a look and can see the potential for this aspect, you will have noticed that some of the links were not finished and this is something we would work on later.\n
Steph:\nWithout labouring the point it was important for us to take the students through a reflection process to see what they feel they did well and what they would have done differently had they the opportunity. \nA lot of students commented that they felt they took control of the mouse more than they should of, - and after looking at images of the day year eight students found this more of a challenge than year sevens.\nA particular favourite of mine was the numerous comments about managing behavour you would see students clapping to try and get attention of the students in their workshop - welcome to my world was my response. \nwhat we hand’t counted on was the freedom the parent helpers and teachers gave their year six student and how difficult it was without the roving eye of a teacher or parent for our students.\nThe students also worked out very quickly that there was a wide range of ability in their work shop and so they had to think on their feet to meet the needs, many of them would in future pay more attention to this.\n

STEPH: The journey that our students took me on last year is why I teach. I will be talking about this experience for many a day to come. I was proud of every single student and the contribution they made to the success of the day. It is also sometimes not the big gestures that mean the most. Here are some ideas on how you could do your own kids for kids conference in your school. \nend this with a follow the possibilites many variations on the model we are presenting today.\n
\nClaire: \nSteph: When you see the students go through this process and realise the potential of peer to peer mentoring, I have spent a lot of time over the holidays thinking how I can impliment change within my teaching practice to make this the norm in my classroom.\nClaire: \nWe know peer mentoring has the opportunity to be highly successful than why is it not embedded authentically in practice.\n
