chief executive officer at
Glassdoor, a company that
allows employees and former
employees
to anonymously review their
former and current employers,
believe that effective team
building is essential to a
company’s growth and success.
He recommends three things all
business leaders must do to
ensure effective team building in
Sydney.
How to Build a Powerhouse
Team
1. Define a mission statement
To build a strong team, Mr Hohman
said leaders must define a mission
statement that will help managers
and business owners steer their
employees
towards the direction they want to
go to.According to him, a mission
statement helps “define the
mountain that you want your
employees to climb.” However, it
isn’t enough that businesses create
a mission statement.
It’s also important that
management takes an active role in
leading their workers so the latter
will remain engaged and
motivated, which can help in their
personal growth and development.
2. Create core values to show how
your team should work
Mr Hohman believes in the
importance of core values in building
a strong team. He explained that the
core values “capture” the way a
company works and provides
definable goals for each team
member.
They can be anything, from how
companies treat their customers to
how they expect their employees to
perform. Not only can it help build
trust, creating core values also lets
everyone know what their.
responsibilities are.This, according
to Mr Hohman, helps ensure that
everyone is on the same page and
is moving towards the same
direction
3. Embrace feedback and
transparency
There is always room for
improvement. Even if you’ve won
theSydney Amazing
Race countless times and your
company is doing well, there are
still ways to raise the bar a bit.
According to Mr Hohman,
throughout the course of working
for various companies, such as
Expedia and Microsoft, he has found
that the best teams are those built
by leaders who encourage feedback
and transparency.
According to him, honest and
open communication gives
businesses the chance to grow
and improve. It is also one of the
best ways to hear what everyone
has to say and make them feel
valued and appreciated.
While it can be difficult for some
managers or team leaders to
receive negative feedback from
their team members, Mr Hohman
said that when it comes to building
a strong team, it’s very crucial that
each employee feels that he or she
can to their managers or
supervisors anytime.
Building a work environment
that promotes and embraces
feedback and transparency can
benefit a company or
organisation in many ways—
from recruiting and retaining
the right people to generating
bigger annual profits.
