What prevents leaders from
delegating more effectively?
More people in leadership roles (70%) are uncomfortable
transferring their responsibility to someone else.
Less than 30% of companies today provide training to enhance
the leader’s delegation techniques.

Follow these 9 steps to greatly
improve your delegating ability
and overall value to your
organization

When You Grow, Your Business Grows
Step 1:
What should you be delegating?
Routine tasks or ongoing responsibilities that are not your
strengths or you simply don’t enjoy doing.
WHY?- There maybe others in your organization who could
actually do these things better. Handing these tasks over
creates a higher sense of worth for them while freeing you up
to work on more strategic pursuits

Step 2:
Who should you delegate to?
Employees who are best suited for the task, not employees
with room on their plates.
WHY?- The goal of delegation is not only to off load things
you don’t want to do but improve the outcome by giving
them to people who will do the task better. These folks may
be your busiest employees currently.

Step 3:
Tell the employee why you
selected them
Most employees view delegation as being dumped on; more
things to do but no more pay!
Explaining why you selected them adds importance to the
assignment and shows them you are willing to invest in their
development.

Step 4:
Make sure the employee
understands what is in it for them
There should be opportunities to learn to handle greater
responsibility and some amount of authority. There could be
training opportunities. They may have the chance to work with
other departments or management personnel.
Let them know that this assignment prepares them for future
growth or promotion opportunities.

Step 5:
What do you expect the
outcome to be?
After you have gained agreement and explained the project,
clearly explain the outcome you expect.
WHY?- Employees who are looking to advance and grow with
you want to know what they need to do to meet or exceed
your expectations.

Step 6:
What role will you play once
you’ve made the assignment?
This step is critical! Your role now becomes one of
monitoring and mentoring. If you jump in at any sign of
trouble, you destroy the opportunity to develop your report.
Set expectations (milestones) for follow-up, project updates
and times to discuss issues.

Step 7:
How do you know what’s
happening during the process?
Rely on your normal tracking and monitoring systems. Be
observant of the area being delegated. Ask good questions
during follow-up meetings to determine how the employee is
doing and handling the role.
Trust the individual but verify the activity.

Step 8:
How has your business changed as
a result?
As you continue to practice delegation and become more
confident in the outcome, you will find you have more time
and focus for higher value projects like marketing or
recruiting.
You should also see more engaged employees who value their
work and care about their performance.

Step 9:
What will you do next time?
Recognize that delegation is a skill that needs to be developed
over time. Learn from your mistakes to perfect your process.
Let your employees know that mistakes will not hinder future
opportunities to learn, develop and take on greater levels of
responsibility.
