Baron Pierre De Coubertin was a French aristocrat and was also the founder of the
modern Olympic games.
He was born on January the first 1863 in France and then died 1934 after a longtime
of loyalty to the olympics.
Baron Pierre De Coubertin founded the international Olympic committee. He is
considered the father of the olympics.
In 1892 he started campaign to get people together from all around the world to play his
new modern olympics.
Crowds gathered around to watch the games, at first nobody agreed with him and he
went nowhere but he strived and strived to get the olympics up again and eventually he
did, it took 4 years.

when was the flag/symbol introduced?
The 5 rings on the olympic flag represents the union of 5 continents of the
world and the meeting of the athletes who participated in this cycle of
events.The olympic comittee adopted the symbol/flag in 1914 and was first
flown at the Antwerp games in 1920.

4. CEREMONIES
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games adds an additional layer of symbolism
to the flag. Traditionally, eight people carry in the flag. Five of these flagbearers
represent the continents, while the other three stand for the Olympic ideals of sport,
environment, and culture.
At the 2002 Salt Lake Games, astronaut John Glenn of the United States, Noble
Prize winner Desmond Tutu of South Africa, aboriginal Olympic champion Cathy
Freeman of Australia, political leader Lech Walesa of Poland, and Olympic ski
jumper Kazuyoshi Funaki of Japan each represented their continent while carrying the
flag. For the ideals, Olympic alpine skier Jean-Claude Killy of France stood as a
symbol for sport, explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau of France for the environment, and
film director Steven Spielberg of the United States for culture.This proves how the

Boris Onishchenko was caught cheating when the officials found a bugging device in
his epee. He was able to change the score on the board by using a devise
"In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic
Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them, in the true spirit of
sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams."
Written by Baron de Coubertin, the oath is taken by an athlete from the host
nation while holding a corner of the Olympic flag. The athletes' oath was first
taken by Belgian fencer Victor Boin at the 1920 Antwerp Games.
