There are 56 ethnic minority groups in China that make up 8% of the population and have their own languages and religious beliefs like Islam, Buddhism, and Shamanism. While the Chinese constitution guarantees equal rights, ethnic minorities often do not benefit equally from China's economic growth and face issues with racial problems and unequal allocation of resources as the Han Chinese dominate the best jobs. Tensions also exist regarding territories like Tibet and Taiwan, whose independence some groups seek but which China claims sovereignty over.
