Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete and cancer research activist. He was diagnosed with bone cancer at age 18 which resulted in the amputation of his right leg. While in the hospital, he was inspired to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. In 1980, he began his Marathon of Hope, running over 5,000 km across Canada before the cancer spread to his lungs, forcing him to stop in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Terry Fox passed away in 1981 at age 22, but his legacy lives on through annual fundraising runs in his name that have raised over $400 million worldwide for cancer research.
