Belonging Essay
Belonging consists of a struggle with opposing pressures. A desire to belong also consists of
emotional conflicts and struggles between being acknowledged while also remaining as an
individual and retaining personal ideals which may ultimately result in a connection. This is
explored in Emily Dickinson's selected poetry I died for beauty, but was scarce and I had been
hungry all the years , as well as Scott Westerfeld's novel Uglies. These texts all depict a struggle
between being recognised and accepted in society and the desire to remain true to one's self,
exploring the paradoxical nature of belonging which, on one hand, provides fulfilment, but also
removes a sense of personal identity.

connection is successfully explored by Dickinson through the depiction of the persona's conflict
between a desire to belong yet desiring individuality as an artist, which ultimately results in a

Scott Westerfeld's Uglies also explores the struggle with maintaining individual identity while
wishing to be accepted society through the perspective of protagonist Tally Youngblood. В¬Tally and
Shay display conflicting perspectives towards the 'pretties' where Tally's desire to join the
community evident in a positive tone that is used when describing them such as "beautiful" is
contrasted with Shay's views of the society in "doing what you're supposed to do is always
boring", where a struggle between opposing views is illustrated through the two in which Tally
shows a wish to be accepted while Shay instead only wants to remain herself rather than have her
ideals forcefully removed.

Belonging
Belonging can be a possible path to an individual's self–actualisation. A sense of identity can be
identified by belonging or not belonging to a particular group or place. A person can portray
different values of belonging through different situations and settings, like in Shakespeare's period
and the period in 'Fight Club'. Maslow's Hierarchy of belonging suggests that belonging is one of
the basic needs of human existence. All humans aspire to belong but only a few are able to
transcend this basic human need and become self–actualised individuals who rise beyond their social

concept can influence our belonging to a place or group. This is explored through Shakespeare's
play "as you like it". Throughout the novel, 'as you like it' explores the idea of belonging to place.
The title
itself gives the play to the audience, implying belongs to those viewing it. Throughout the novel,
we can clearly detect the characters desires to belong as dictated by the social religious hierarchy
of the renaissance drawn out by the church and king in the form of the chain of being. According
to Shakespeare text and his context, everyone has their rightful place. If one place is altered or
disturbed, there is chaos and anarchy. Hence, 'As You like It' is a reaffirmation of the chain of
being where Duke seniors dukedom has been altered by his younger brother Frederick, and this
causes the chaos that leads to many of the characters fleeing to the place they belong to into the
forest.
In As You like It, the traditions of society push characters to play certain roles. Rosalind, the
protagonist, has no control over society and gender expectations presented to her. Even though she is
the most interesting, intelligent and active character in the novel, she is confined into the expected
female role. This suppresses her personality to be expected to fit into and belong at

Belonging – What is it and is it important?
According to most dictionaries, belonging is either being the property of someone or being part of
an organisation. But I believe that belonging is more than that. And what about the people who don't
feel they belong? Are there significant side effects?
Belonging means actively participating, and actively participating gives you a purpose. It is
important to an individual's mental health and wellbeing and there are negative side effects to those
who feel they don't belong.
Belonging also relates to being able to be yourself within the community. But it is not something
that happens instantly. It is a process. Finding true belonging can be difficult in our society
because of many reasons. Some people can be excluded from events due to things they have no
control of (skin colour, gender, motor skills, etc), and often feel they don't belong as no part of
society seems to want them.
Sometimes it can be the opposite, and you don't want to have to be a part of something, like a
religion or culture that is being forced on you. This is evident in the touching book 'the rabbit proof
fence' as three girls (Molly, Daisy, Gracie) have western culture forced on them. This causes them to
unwisely flee the settlement they were relocated to in an attempt to go home to Jigalong.
This can affect people in bad ways, and can lead to depression, sleep disorders and even an

A sense of belonging is an essential part of every individual's life. A sense of belonging can be
created from having connections with people and places within a personal, cultural, historical and
social context. The choice of where to belong and who to belong with changes people's sense of

'Feliks Skrzynecki' explores the relationship between the poet and his father, and their contrasting
experiences of belonging in a new land. The poem is written from the poet's perspective of his
father. In the first two stanzas he sees him from the perspective of a loving son and builds up a
positive and respectful image of his father. The emotive word 'gentle' suggests his fond attachment
and admiration for his father who has raised him. This admiration was not apparent in his youth as
Skrzynecki recognises that there were cultural barriers between them that hampered the father–son
relationship. This poem explores Feliks's sense not fully belonging to Australia and his son's growing
detachment from their polish heritage. In many ways father and son grow to become strangers to
each other, with individual attitudes towards belonging in an Australian context. As they share no
common cultural background, the connection and sense of belonging to each other is not complete.
Peter does not belong within the Polish culture, nor does he completely identify with Australian
culture when he was a young boy and adolescent. He experiences guilt and regret as he cannot share
his father's memories and enthusiasm for Poland. From a second generation migrant perspective this

"Birds of passage" navigate from one destination to another which emphasises the absence of a
fixed home for the migrants. The constant change of the hostel prevents Skrzynecki from finding a
place of belonging, leaving him feeling lost and confused about his sense of self. The hostel
provides a prison–like life and community group to which the migrants belong. The "barrier at the
main gate" is a metaphoric and literal barrier, giving the impression of imprisonment, sealing off the
migrants from the rest of the world. This isolation permits the migrants to a group, but not a country.
Skrzynecki uses alliteration such as, "hunger and hate" to demonstrate the migrants emotions of
other groups after their own suffering. Skrzynecki, like other migrants who would have started out
their journey with hope and optimism, feels as though he does not belong in the new land because of
the impermanent, instable environment, however he and the other migrants have certain things in
common which unite them, consequently creates a place where they belong.
In contrast with Skrzynecki's disconnection through place and identity, Anh Do's, 'The Happiest
Refugee' elucidates a more positive sense of belonging. Through the use of anecdotes, he explains
that it didn't take long before his father found a job and moving out of "East Hills Migrant Hostel"

In conclusion, one of the stages of Maslow's hierarchy of need is love and belonging, Often times

ENGLISH CREATIVE WRITING I am outside the door. Still. I closed the door on the old world
of me, the dark side of me. Life as a drug dealer. You get in quick and you get out quick. Simple
enough isn't it? No. Once you choose a direction in life, it's hard, and can often seem impossible
to change. Especially in the world of drugs. I feel like I have let everyone I ever knew down, but
it was for my own good. Yeah the money is fantastic, but what good's money when you're in the
joint for the rest of your life? I closed a door on all my friends, my mates that stuck up for me no
matter what. After all they had done for me, I just split. I didn't talk to any of them about it. Not one

Ironic, isn't it? The only thing was that all my comrades in the police force knew there was
corruption in my past, but they just couldn't prove it. Socially I didn't fit in. They despised me –
they hated my guts. How can I blame them? Every morning I would get cold, piercing stares from
my comrades. One person in particular, Sergeant George Harris had these sky blue, splitting eyes.
I felt that he could look right into my soul, into my past, and see all the darkness that was
embedded within it. I felt ill at ease in his presence. He reminded me of that night long ago, the

I stare back at myself in the mirror and observe as my skin hides beneath a layer of foundation two
shades too pale. This is my mask, a mask I use to conceal my caramel skin, a mask I use to detach
myself from my heritage, a mask I use to pretend I am not Indian. My chocolate–brown, almond
shaped eyes, framed by my unkempt eyebrows, give me away. Dissatisfied, I head to my
grandparents' living room. It is only four A.M., but I am wide–awake. Oh, the joys of jet lag.
Eventually, I clutch my bulky camera in my hands and open the front door. I sit soundlessly on the
porch, enveloped by the tranquility of dawn. The only noise comes from my camera; it produces a

How To Write A Creative Writing Essay
As a child, I had always been fascinated with the ocean, even more so, those who dare braved to
conquer it. Every Saturday, in the early afternoon, my father would take me down to the dock,
and I would stare in awe at the many ships going in and out as he fed the sea gulls. However, on
these Saturday's, I would always keep my eye open for one specific ship. The only yacht to ever
dock on a Saturday afternoon was steered by Captain C. Fitz. At first, I marvelled at the thought
that such a frail man could manoeuvre such a giant beast across a series of obstacles and waves.
It wasn't until I grew older and became a part of Captain C. Fitz crew, that I came to understand.
The Captain was a tall man, whose height was only defeated by a few. Although he towered over
his crew, he not once looked down on them; rather, they looked up to him. His hands were visibly
rough, covered in calluses and dry patches, a side effect of his addiction to the steering of the
yacht's rough bark wheel. At first glance, the Captain's face was an embodiment of character, with
thin cracked lips that curtained his ageless smile, deep brackets bordering his mouth, and crinkles
at the corner of his eyes deepening every time his raucous laughter ripped through the air, you
would think the man had never experienced a sorrow or pain. The Captain loved to rock up and down
The engine would sputter at the most unfortunate times, and many of its parts would either glitch, or
cease to work altogether. Eventually, the yacht was deemed irreparable, and the crew was relieved
from their positions. Whether it was bravery or idiocy that caused Captain C. Fitz to sail the yacht
one more time into oblivion, I did not know, but I did understand one thing. Both beings had been
tired beyond the point of exhaustion, and were now reminders that no matter how strong things seem

Essay "A sense of belonging requires an understanding of one's past." Although the main aspect of
this quote is referring to the past; in other words time, it could also mean features of the past, such
as people, places, past experience etc. These aspects of belonging are extensively shown within
Peter Skrzynecki's 'Immigrant Chronicle'; in particular the poems 'Feliks Skrzynecki' and 'in the folk

This poem overall shows how choosing not to co–exist with the society around you does not mean
you lose a sense of connection with yourself or your past. In the poem 'In the folk museum' the poet
is mainly just visiting the local museum and not really enjoying it. The tone all throughout the
poem is mainly dull suggesting he is not really interested at all, also suggesting that he has no
connection with the place. If anything throughout the whole poem he emphasizes the boredom and
dullness through the lack of descriptive language in stanza 2 where the poet just lists the items he
sees. But considering this is a museum and is mainly there to express history, the main reason why
he is so bored is because of the fact he cannot connect with this past. He states this in the following
quote; "To remind me of the past which isn't mine." To also state this fact; in stanza 4 he begins to
talk about church' "In the town hall next door they sing to Christ." This emphasis his religious
culture and the fact he cannot connect with this museum. However even though he can't connect to
the museum; he also emphasis that he doesn't want to be part of it at all in the following quote;
