Structure of the Cell Membrane
Phospholipids Cholesterol Proteins ( peripheral and integral) Carbohydrates (glucose) Membrane Components
Phospholipids ,[object Object],Contains 2 fatty acid chains that are nonpolar Head is polar & contains a –PO 4 group & glycerol
[object Object],[object Object],FLUID MOSAIC MODEL
Cell Membrane Polar heads are hydrophilic “water loving ” Nonpolar tails are hydrophobic “water fearing” Makes membrane “Selective” in what crosses
Cell Membrane Hydrophobic molecules pass easily ; hydrophilic DO NOT The cell membrane is made of 2 layers of phospholipid s called the lipid bilayer
Solubility ,[object Object]
Semipermeable Membrane Small molecules and larger hydrophobic molecules move through easily. e.g. O 2 , CO 2 , H 2 O
Ions , hydrophilic molecules larger than water, and large molecules such as proteins do not move through the membrane on their own. Semipermeable Membrane

Three Forms of Transport Across the Membrane
Passive Transport ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Passive Transport ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Proteins Are Critical to Membrane Function
Types of Transport Proteins ,[object Object],[object Object]
Facilitated Diffusion Molecules will randomly move through the pores in Channel Proteins .
Facilitated Diffusion ,[object Object],[object Object]
Carrier Proteins ,[object Object]
Active Transport ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Active transport ,[object Object],[object Object]
Sodium-Potassium Pump 3 Na+ pumped in for every 2 K+ pumped out; creates a membrane potential
Moving the “Big Stuff” Molecules are moved out of the cell by vesicles that fuse with the plasma membrane. Exocytosis - moving things out. This is how many hormones are secreted and how nerve cells communicate with one another .
Exocytosis Exocytic vesicle immediately after fusion with plasma membrane.
Moving the “Big Stuff” Large molecules move materials into the cell by one of three forms of endocytosis .
Pinocytosis Most common form of endocytosis . Takes in dissolved molecules as a vesicle .
Pinocytosis ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Example of Pinocytosis pinocytic vesicles forming mature transport vesicle Transport across a capillary cell (blue).
Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis Some integral proteins have receptors on their surface to recognize & take in hormones, cholesterol , etc.
Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis
Endocytosis – Phagocytosis Used to engulf large particles such as food, bacteria , etc. into vesicles Called “Cell Eating”
Phagocytosis About to Occur
Phagocytosis - Capture of a Yeast Cell (yellow) by Membrane Extensions of an Immune System Cell (blue)
Exocytosis The opposite of endocytosis is exocytosis. Large molecules that are manufactured in the cell are released through the cell membrane . Inside Cell Cell environment

  • 14. Cell Membrane Hydrophobic molecules pass easily ; hydrophilic DO NOT The cell membrane is made of 2 layers of phospholipid s called the lipid bilayer
  • 15.
  • 16. Semipermeable Membrane Small molecules and larger hydrophobic molecules move through easily. e.g. O 2 , CO 2 , H 2 O
  • 17. Ions , hydrophilic molecules larger than water, and large molecules such as proteins do not move through the membrane on their own. Semipermeable Membrane

  • 68. Moving the “Big Stuff” Molecules are moved out of the cell by vesicles that fuse with the plasma membrane. Exocytosis - moving things out. This is how many hormones are secreted and how nerve cells communicate with one another .
  • 69. Exocytosis Exocytic vesicle immediately after fusion with plasma membrane.
  • 70. Moving the “Big Stuff” Large molecules move materials into the cell by one of three forms of endocytosis .
  • 71. Pinocytosis Most common form of endocytosis . Takes in dissolved molecules as a vesicle .
  • 72.
  • 73. Example of Pinocytosis pinocytic vesicles forming mature transport vesicle Transport across a capillary cell (blue).
  • 74. Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis Some integral proteins have receptors on their surface to recognize & take in hormones, cholesterol , etc.
  • 76.
  • 77. Endocytosis – Phagocytosis Used to engulf large particles such as food, bacteria , etc. into vesicles Called “Cell Eating”
  • 78.
  • 80. Phagocytosis - Capture of a Yeast Cell (yellow) by Membrane Extensions of an Immune System Cell (blue)
  • 81. Exocytosis The opposite of endocytosis is exocytosis. Large molecules that are manufactured in the cell are released through the cell membrane . Inside Cell Cell environment
