Takayasu's arteritis is a large vessel vasculitis that typically affects the aorta and its branches. It causes thickened arterial walls, vessel narrowing, and aneurysm formation. MRI is useful for detecting early disease by identifying subtle wall abnormalities before angiography can detect stenosis. Prospective studies show MRI has high sensitivity for detecting active disease.
