The exclusionary rule is a rule that suppresses evidence obtained illegally or unconstitutionally by police. It applies in around 1.3% of criminal cases and about 50% of defendants are still convicted even when evidence is suppressed. There are several exceptions to the rule including the independent source doctrine, discovery doctrine, good faith exception, and purge taint doctrine. There is debate around both supporting and replacing the exclusionary rule, with alternatives proposed such as an independent review board or civil actions against the government.
