In the early days of product development, the technology is inferior and lacking in performance. The focus is very much on the technology itself. The users are enthusiast who like the idea of the product, find use for it, and except the lack of performance. Then as the product becomes more mature, other factors become important, such as price, design, features, portability. The product moves from being a technology to become a consumer item, and even a community. In this lecture we explore the change from technology focus to consumer focus, and look at why people stand in line overnight to buy the latest gadgets.

Everyone talks about innovation. But what is it? Everyone is developing apps. But will they gain traction in the marketplace? We all want to monetize our creations, but is there a recipe for success? Anyone designing new products, strategy or change will need to consider the future world in which their creations will exist. A little more than ten years ago I was asked this question: “What will the world look like in 10 years and how might this affect the organisation?” To answer this I needed to learn how to be a Futurist. It wouldn't be that hard right? I could just make a few wild predictions about a utopian future with robots and sprinkle with buzzwords? No, I'd have to take another route and learn more about the world in the process. In this talk I will break from the future-gazing and do two things rare for a Futurist; I will look back into the past and I will focus on the predictions I got wrong. What can ten years of perspective teach us and how can we use that for looking again towards the future.

Marshall McLuhan said “the medium is the message”, meaning the medium changes how the message is perceived. I tell a story about how we came to prototype a conversational UI, and how this new medium challenged the team's thinking. This is less about the 'how' of constructing a Conversational UI and more about the 'why'. What thinking we needed to challenge and why this approach helped achieve that. In a broader sense it reflects the evolution of the industry in the past 5 or so years.

My plenary speech at the inaugural UX Live London conference on October 26, 2017. Eric Reiss CEO and Author 4.30pm-5.15pm Innovation vs. Best Practice – Conflict or Opportunity? “Best practice” implies doing things in the best possible manner, based on past experience. But we like to think of ourselves as innovators in a dynamic industry – we want to go where no one has gone before. Thus, “best practice” and “innovation” are like oil and water – they don’t easily mix. How can we, as UX professionals, balance the need for consistency that “best practice” provides, with our on-going mission to improve the quality of our products? How can we create genuine improvements – and when have we been seduced by the evil twins, Fad and Fashion? “Innovation vs. Best Practice” explores the elements that make up these two ends of the UX spectrum. We’ll take a closer look at the popular definitions of both innovation and best practice – and discover why these are frequently inadequate, misleading, or both. Why is a “standard” not always a “best practice”? And if “invention” can be spontaneous, why is “innovation” always planned? We’ll also examine some of the worst reasons to innovate, which are also some of the most common, plus the Japanese concept of “chindogu” – “useless innovation.” Perhaps most important of all, we’ll see how User Driven Design helps us avoid harmful innovation in comparison to the more common User Centered Design methodology.

How has a richer web changed attitudes toward usability? What are the quick wins and potential savings for enterprises pursuing usable software? The fact that improving usability and user experience is good for business should be common sense, but it’s not! Andre Charland will discuss some ways of measuring ROI with usability. Why should business users care about AJAX and how can rich web applications translate to dollars and cents? The session will demonstrate ways to create a financial argument for building richer web applications, and how that can be used to advocate for AJAX-based development. These benefits can come from cost savings, creation of a competitive advantage through user-experience, and improved workflow through more ergonomic software. Then we’ll discuss 3 areas of concern with respect to AJAX, including a cross-browser solution to the back-button problem, techniques for ensuring high-performance on slow connections, and how to conduct low-cost and high-value usability testing of web applications. The session will conclude with a discussion about how to use user interface patterns to organize and communicate to other stakeholders in the organization. The goal of this presentation is to arm managers and developers alike with tools and techniques to design and gauge the success of their AJAX development project.

How do you design a mobile money service for people in rural Uganda who’ve never had a bank account? How do you test the usability of a mobile phone’s address book for users in rural India who’ve never had an address… yet alone an analog address book? As cheap PCs and inexpensive mobile phones flood the global market, usability and user experience professionals will encounter more and more questions like these – questions that challenge not only our research tools and methodologies, but our fundamental assumptions about how people engage with technology. In this talk, Rachel will share insights she’s gained through creating experiences that must scale across vastly different cultures. She’ll share her thoughts on the challenges and opportunities designing for global markets will present to the user experience industry in the years to come.

Technological evolution is constantly reshaping the future of work. Technology—both visible and invisible—transforms the workplace as it transforms the inhabitants. We’ll study the effects of technology on the workplace, and provide insight into the workplace of the future. Major drivers of change—including globalization, technology, and demographics—raise the question of how to ensure optimal worker engagement and productivity. Explore these ideas and identify the real effects of technology on people and places. We’ll discuss what the future workplace might look like, including how the very concept of work is evolving. Discover the key tensions that are present in today’s workplace and look at the influence of technology across all business sectors. You’ll gain a new perspective on technology, its impact on today’s workforce, and why organizations must take notice.

Software developers are intended to be massive, highly leverageable value creators for their companies and teams - using their creative and technical talent to build products themselves or mission-critical systems that facilitate the delivery of value inside the business. The blunt truth, however, is that many software developers would screw up tying their own shoes when left to their own devices. There's an abundant corpus of work out there on how managers routinely let down their software developers through insufficient planning, communication, listening, and support. In this talk we're going to explore the inverse - how individual software developers contributing to a project unintentionally sabotage their teams, their companies, their projects, and themselves through: * Immutable technical preferences + biases; * Bad attitudes; * Poor listening; * Inflexible and unproductive learning styles; * Risk aversion; * Incuriosity; * And more! Most importantly, in this talk we're going to try to address how we can help shift developers who want to learn and improve, but are have trouble executing, become the high value contributors they'd like to be.

This paper "Beyond the Codes: Repositioning Towards a Sustainable Development," presented in 2013, underscores the crucial role of effective communication in driving sustainability within engineering practice. While traditional engineering approaches have relied heavily on codes of measurement and standardization to ensure safety and efficiency, the paper argues for a fundamental repositioning of engineering towards sustainability. This repositioning, depicted as going "beyond the codes," urges engineers to integrate sustainability principles into their work. Engineers must recognize that sustainability encompasses environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic prosperity, transcending mere compliance with technical standards. This broader mandate requires engineers to engage in dialogue with diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and communities. Effective communication becomes paramount in fostering collaboration and garnering support for sustainable initiatives. Moreover, engineers must embrace a new mindset that positions sustainability as a core aspect of their profession. They must advocate for sustainability within their organizations, challenging existing norms, and championing innovative solutions. This shift in perspective requires engineers to become proficient communicators, capable of articulating the value proposition of sustainability to various audiences. Internal communication within engineering firms is equally vital, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. Engineers must share knowledge, expertise, and best practices to accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices. Visual communication tools, such as data visualization, can aid in conveying complex technical information effectively. Ultimately, the paper emphasizes that effective communication is essential for repositioning engineering towards sustainability. By embracing communication as a core competency and championing sustainability, engineers can navigate the complexities of the 21st century and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Your voice, smiling, facial expressions, body language, and genuine Hospitality are tightly connected. Always strive to be a Hospitality service professional. The importance of Smiling is vital in the hospitality industry. People who were or are being raised and educated on digital devices have not had the opportunity to learn and use the necessary and multiple communication skills the way previous generations did. It's a lost art that needs to be presented to the generations that followed the Baby Boomers. These are the generations alive today: Generation X, Generation Y (Millennials), Generation Z, and Generation Alpha.
