2. Why are we using strong language in
our film ?
Before we started coming up with the dialog for our characters, we asked ourselves who
our audience is.
Our audience would be people of our age group from 16 to 25, mostly students and
people who are in the film industry.

After we had targeted an audience, we knew that we would include strong language and
violence in our film.
3. The main reason is realism. We wanted to give the
characters a real personality and act as natural as
possible. A great technique we used was to act out the
scene by ourselves, without the script. So every piece of
dialog was first improvised and recorded on camera.
After that we took the lines which we liked and did
adjustments. The strong language was a part of that.
Swearing between students is considered as normal, so
we knew that we had to include it to keep the
interaction between Protagonist and Antagonist real
and natural.
We broke the order by having a teacher swear at a
student, but in the world we created it is necessary for
the plot and the character development that we see,
that corruption, violence and illegal activities are
involved in a strong way.
If we had shot the film without strong language, the
characters wouldn’t be half as intimidating as they are
right now.
4. Mr Anderson is a character in our film. His character is
tired of students and believes that they took his time
and didn’t give anything back, that’s why he scams
them.
To get across that he had enough from students and
can’t take anymore, we made him swear at a student.
It might be that in real life that would not happen, but
in real life a teacher wouldn’t scam a student. We are
creating content for entertainment.
Steve is another character from our film. He has anger
management issues and only cares about himself. So
swearing for him is as normal as breathing.
If he didn’t swear, the audience wouldn’t get how
aggressive he is. It would also be unrealistic that he
would start a fight without ever using bad language.
5. Another reason is controversy. Word of
mouth is a very powerful means of publicizing
content on the web. Short films usually don’t
have swearing in them, because it minimizes
the audience. Kids wont be able to see it, but
kids don’t usually watch short films.
The fact that we are staying away from the
norm will hopefully help us to expand our
audience and make people watch our
content, because it is a gap in the market.
Strong language is always seen as such a
vulgar occurrence, but it can be seen in a
more positive light. Swearing could be seen as
a release of anger and frustration.
Strong language combined with a good
narrative and amazing visuals will appeal to
an audience of our age. There are some
examples on the left.
6. The final reason is to make the film
memorable for the audience and boost the
popularity. We are hoping to make our film
quotable. We did some research in famous
movie quotes and noticed that most of them
include strong language.
Yes it is inappropriate, but that was what we
were going for. The mood we were going for
is a dark, but not too serious atmosphere.
The audience is supposed to have a good
time and enjoy the film.
Of course we cant go over the top with it, so
we entered curse words only if it felt right.
Obviously our film will not appeal to older
people, but they are not really targeted and
the elders which are into short films will
hopefully appreciate that we did try
something new.
