Examples Of Prescriptive Grammar
Grammar is a set of language rules and system. There are various types of grammar. Descriptive
grammar is the rules that English speakers follow. Whereas, prescriptive grammar is the textbook
rules in order to write and speak correctly. For example, the sentence I didn't go nowhere. is correct
in descriptive grammar but incorrect in prescriptive grammar. "The part of the grammar that
concerns the structure of phrases and sentences is called syntax. Rules of grammar determine how
morphemes and words can combine to express a specific meaning" (Fromkin, & Rodman, 1998).
Grammaticality is based on specific patterns determined by the syntactic rules. The rules are acquired
or constructed unconsciously as children (Fromkin, & Rodman, 1998)....show more content...
In other word, Do support doesn't occur in negative statements and questions if the affirmative
statement already has an auxiliary verb such as be/do/have or can/could/may/might/must/shall
/should/will/would. Examples are as follows.
+ You are living here. (pronoun/ auxiliary/ verb/ adverb)
Q Are you living here?
_ Aren't you living here? / Are you not living here?
Are in the first affirmative statement is an auxiliary verb. Therefore, do support doesn't occur in
questions and negative statements. Although be/do/have usually function as auxiliaries, they can
also work as main verbs in sentences (Teschner, & Evans, 1993). When be functions as a main
verb it never allows Do support. However, both do and have require Do support when working as a
main verb. A wh–word can function either as the subject in its wh/co question or the object in it
(Teschner, & Evans, 1993). If wh–words are objects, the words move to the front of the sentence,
which is called wh–fronting. Whereas, wh–words are subjects, the wh–movement doesn't occur
because someone as a subject already appears at the front.
Compare:

Essay about The History of English
The History of English The most commonly spoken language in our day, would be English or as
some people might call it " The Lingua Franca ". It is a language, which is taken almost a thousand
years to evolve, mainly through its borrowings from other languages such as French and Latin. It is
actually classified as part of the Germanic group of languages. Even though it is the most commonly
spoken language today, it is not without its faults, which would be its phonetic symbols only,
representing one sound and each sound would have its appropriate symbol. Most European
languages are very similar to those spoken in India and Persia, assuming that most of the European
peoples are descendants of the...show more content...
(Lecture notes, M. Disney) Latin influenced English before the Anglo–Saxons arrived in England.
The Germanic tribes who later settled on the isles were in contact with small parts of the Roman
civilization. Some of the words borrowed by the Germanic groups were: Mint: Minet, Street: strata
via When the first English tribes came to settle in England they made contact with the people that
had been part of the Roman Empire which probably spoke a form of Latin. Some of their words past
in to the language of the new conquerors. (Lecture notes, M. Disney) In the sixth century St.
Benedict reintroduced Christianity. As the religion spread English added a large number of Latin
words to itself to express new ideas connected with the religion. However, this lead to the loss of
grammatical gender of the language and therefore mixed the vocabulary. (Internet 1) In the eighth
century the Danes made continual raids upon the English coasts which they later settled. They were
then defeated by King Alfred the Great. A hundred years later another Danish King invaded England
and managed to get his son, Canute, was put upon the English throne. These Danish invasions,
however destructive they were, had quite a tremendous influence upon the English language. The
English borrowed words such as skin, ill, get and leg. (Lecture notes, M. Disney)

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write
an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite
better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and
the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the
contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards.
Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different
methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall
theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content...
This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand
the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays
writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

Why I Want to Study English Essay
Why should anyone want to study English? Why not French or Spanish or even Mandarin Chinese?
Is English so much more interesting than any other language? Why spend time studying a language
and not mathematics or science? Well, there are some very good reasons for that.
Never before, has a sound knowledge of languages been so important for finding a decent job. It
is probably the first question they ask you if you apply for one. Someone who knows different
languages will be preferred to someone with a more limited command of languages. If a person
applies for a job in which it is very important to operate or programme a computer, he may have
acquired that knowledge and those skills, but still someone else who knows more languages will be

At present, the world tries to take care of that problem by massively learning English as a second
language, a choice that has its roots in the history of this language. "It's too late to be studying
Hebrew; it is more important to understand even the slang of today." Since the end of World War II,
English has been taught at most West–European schools, even at most schools in the world. English
is predestined to be the international language par excellence.
Communication has never been more important to the world than it is now. Just think of the
Internet. When you surf the Internet you immediately notice that the main language is English.
Again we can see the influence of English in the world. Today, already half of the Europeans use
English as their first or second language. "English has borrowed from everywhere and now goes
everywhere." English may not be the language with the highest number of speakers in the world,
but it is definitely the most important. You can reach a lot of people when you are able to
communicate in English. If you like to go working abroad, learning English is a very good
preparation. There are so many large countries where English is the official language, just think of
Great Britain, Ireland, America, Canada... Even in our daily routine, English is all around. It already
starts when you switch on your PC and meet with English `commands, prompts, errors and messages'
– the new type of computer slang.

English For Academic Purpose Essay
English for Academic Purpose (EAP) has become an expanding discipline in higher education
worldwide. Universities are center of intellectual gathering for international scholars. The
development of EAP is stimulated by the internationalization of higher education and increasing
number of international courses taught in university around the world as well as the students'
mobility to universities around the world. In addition , foreign students contributes to the economy
of Western countries , as an evidence UK receives up to 80 billion British pounds during 2013 (
NEF consulting , 2013).
It entails preparing students to use English for higher education and it is one of the most common
forms of English for Specific Purpose (ESP). According to...show more content...
This focuses on the development of role by modeling to student how they can transfer the skills they
acquire in EGAP classes to enhance their understanding while reading the assigned textbooks ,
listening to lectures and writing essays. Defining EAP, it is highlighted that it "refers to any English
teaching that relates to study purpose" (Dudley–Evans and St John 1998 highlighted that EAP is
related to teaching English communication skills in order to succeed study purpose and is primarily
concerned with communication skills required for studies . (ETIC 1975, as quoted in Jordan 1997: 1).
The role of the EAP tutor transcends the limited framework of language teaching, to involve
institutional awareness and a detailed knowledge of specialized discourse. An EAP tutor needs to
research and assist students in understanding and constructing texts in their disciplines and to
actively 'engage with the disciplines'(Dudley–Evans and St John 1998).
Johns and Price–Machado, 2001classified ESP into two main areas namely English for Academic
Purposes (EAP) and English for Occupational Purposes. ). This is shown in Figure 1 . Figure 1.

My English 101 Experience
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned
many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques
that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and
how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also
learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly
quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved
writing skills are shown within each essay. When I first signed up for English 101 at soar, I thought

I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including
style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still
believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as
having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included
being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how
to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to
understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the
improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay
where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved
on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in
my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I
found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are
some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even
though I have learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still
feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. I also see myself as improving
on knowing how to write a thesis but still need work on

Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who
wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language
classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively
as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the
boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases.
Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First,
English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content...
Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my
Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on
speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking
and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native
languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in
English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures.
The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on
listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese
group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language.
Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment
showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and
speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of
months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of
"very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It
involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say
that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for
ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I
should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my
fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.
I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my
first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year
but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to
write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and
memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no
activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage
of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we

Of course, there are certain defects or gaps in my knowledge or ability to use the English language

the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the

English as a Universal Language Essay
English language as a universal language and it is very important. Every people are urge to learn

English is perceived to be crucial for communication at work with regards to employment. But in
Malaysia, the proficiency of English language among youth is declining. Start in the 70s, many
concerned stakeholders from employers, linguists and educationists to parents have voiced their
concern. (Azizan Haraiti, &Lee, Y.M., 2011) Low levels in English proficiently means youth are

Furthermore, English can increase one's chances of being accepted in the exchange program by
improving English. One of the requirements for the program is that people applying should have
decent skills in the English language. Therefore, youth should take actions to improve English

one's English language. Youth must set up a goal and found out the motivations before starting
improving English. Goals can help youth to sort out what is important and what isn't. With goals,
youth will only focus on the things that they want to achieve and spend precious time on them. For
example, learn to write a good essay during three month set as one's goal, he or she will try their
personal best and personal ways to enhance English writing skills during that given period.
Motivation also plays a critical role in improving English language. McDonough S. (1983: 142)
stated that "motivation of the student is one of the most important factors influencing their success
or failure in learning the language." When studying English, youth might face a lot of different
problems like environment problem, financial problem and so on. Motivation can help one to keep
going despite the problems. If one keeps the motivation high and their eyes on the goal, no problem
will seem insuperable. Besides that, attitude of youth towards improving English language also
important. Youth must keep a

Reflective Essay On English 101
Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement.
English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing,
teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and
expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build
on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and
employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader.
The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my
target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and
critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows
there's always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and
personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much
better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good
writer, but a great writer.
Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in
one direction or another. Reflecting on the many skills I honed in English 102, my predetermined
use of rhetorical strategies (ethos, logos, pathos), developing a concise thesis statement, and clearly

Importance Of English Language Arts Essay
What is English Language Arts? How does it differ from English, the language itself? English
Language Arts is not a language, but it is the study of communicating thoughts. Every subject is
important in school; each demonstrates a particular skill in education, but Language Arts builds
complexity of a person's learning. Speaking, reading, and writing are all components of language
arts. Having these skills are important; the first thing an interviewer notices is one's ability to
articulate, and learning English Language Arts helps to obtain that goal. Being able to communicate,
express one's self, and build life skills, are the reasons why English Language Arts is the most
important subject in our education. First and foremost, the...show more content...
However, as I learned more in language arts, I discovered others methods in writing. I know how
to create stories by being imaginative, or write poetry by thinking creatively. Writing takes critical
thinking, a general skill widely used in life. Subjects like math or science may use critical thinking,
but it focuses more on applying knowledge in discussions rather than your own thoughts. Learning
language arts have taught me to be more expressive; you will never know if your words could
inspire someone one day.
Lastly, English Language Arts build life skills that are crucial in life, to prepare yourself for the
outside world. The first impression in an interview is how you present yourself, not how many
achievements you have made. The way you speak, the way you act, the way you answer the
questions, are parts of doing presentations. Senior portfolio is an example of a presentation in
high school, and it is taught in English Language Arts class. The senior portfolio is probably one
of the most important projects in one's whole high school career because it reflects your growth as
a student and as an individual. Learning how to create a good portfolio from Language Arts class
shows one's education level. In addition, companies recruit people with a good education, what you
have learned in English Language Arts will prepare you in college, and your future career.

American English Essays
The question of whether or not English should be an official language has been a controversial topic
since our country was founded. The English language is a tie that helps combine the many pieces of
our society together. Our nation should not acclaim bilingualism, but should enfold English as the
national language spoken in the United States, to secure the future unity of our nation.
The United States is a nation composed of many immigrants from all around the world. We are a
country of many cultural and racial ethnic groups that are constantly reacting to shape the American

It is starting to become the international language as well. Speaking one language helps the ability of
all backgrounds to communicate with one another. With so much diversity in the United States, we
need something that joins us together. To speak a language that is used by the world, will help all
Americans. English is the common bond of our community, and understanding it is the only way a
citizen will be able to fully participate in democracy, business, and education. It is the language of
international relations, as well as the language of our historical documents, of communication and of
safety. By making English the official language, it will help to bring together Americans, not propel
them farther apart.
Many Americans are composed of Hispanic origin. With such a great number of the population
speaking a second language, bilingualism will more than likely become an even more common
occurrence in many states, in the future. This thought strongly associates with the job market of the
United States. The second generation is becoming more bilingual, using one language for their home
and the other for business. Workers are going to have to be able to communicate with one another to
get the job done. Should native– born American employees learn to speak Spanish to communicate
with other fellow employees? My answer would have to be, no. A system that accommodates
immigrants in their native languages removes the

The History of the English Language Essay
The History of the English Language In this paper I will discuss where and how the English
language originated and how it has spread to become one of the most spoken languages in the
world. Before I started my research on my topic of choice, my original hypothesis was that the
English language was started by a whole assortment of Germanic tribes invading England
thousands of years ago. This ultimately became the goal of my paper, to see if Germanic tribes
started the English language, or if it was started from some other tribes that I was not aware of. The
history of the English language is of significance because English is spoken more frequently than
any other language except Chinese, (Bright, 1992). A Germanic language, English...show more

The Proto–Indo–European language was more complex than English today. It is possible to
reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative,
vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case,
number, and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect,
mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different grammatical forms of a word were often related
by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to
express such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in
English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The Proto–Indo–European language is thought to have
been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following
millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, Indo–Iranian,
Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek, Balto
–Slavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish,
German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of
the Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the Indo–European
family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). Theorists suggest that the horse was a major element of the

My experience throughout English 101 Essay
My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101

Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

Standard English Essay
The question to ask is: 'Why not use Standard English all the time?'
Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and
ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of
communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for
mutual understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak,
which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and
its fast paced lifestyle. Using the Standard all the time would be exclusive of the linguistic freedom

Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for
efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of
the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These
modifications form non–standard dialects, transferring the speaker's cultural background and
language to provide a better perception and reflection of identity. The falling intonation accompanied
with interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as 'Gravy?', is the opposite of the rising intonation
used for the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two
communities due to the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun deletion in 'No like' ('I don't like
it') is a feature of many ethnolects (Greek, Aboriginal English), and is differing from the Standard,
yet still helps to get the message across. Ethnolects develop from Standard English, and helps to
express a user's identity through their language use and in–group solidarity within the speech
community.
There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from
communities of speakers all sharing the same use of language. Aboriginal English, a dialect of
Australian English, remains a lingua franca for their speakers, used as a common language to

this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my
strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as
bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being
a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that
from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to
reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a
math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and
more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more

Black English Essay example
"Black English" Another Way to Classify Humans
"To open your mouth В… You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary,
your self–esteem, and alas, your future ". After reading the two essays, "From Outside, In" by
Barbara Mellix and "If Black English Isn't a Language Then Tell Me, What Is?" by James Balwin,
I came to realize a few things one of them being that the way we speak, is a means of identifying
somebody's culture and background. Much in how a license can tell a person your name, age, were
you live etc. a person can tell your race, what kind of education you have and were you are going in
life just by hearing you talk.
When slavery began, a time in human history that I assume many people would rather...show more

She would never make me feel "shame" or any less because I was being myself. It must have been
hard on Mellix to be told that your language and the language of your forefathers was not "proper"
by you own mother.
I believe that learning a language is fine for the right reasons. Expanding your knowledge or
going to a different country, these are both legitimate reasons to learn a language. Learning a
language because you will be ridiculed is not a proper reason. As Fanon stated in Mellix's essay
to speak is, "В…above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization2". So what
Fanon suggest is that when you take on a language it is to become part of the culture almost to
change your identity, and I agree with that. I find when I meet somebody who can speak multiple
languages I look at them with more respect than I would if they only spoke one. Not to say I
would look down on a person who only speaks one language, I just find it admirable for somebody
who would take the time to learn a new language.
Throughout this essay you may have noticed quotations around the terms "black English" and
"standard English". This is because I find it ridiculous to split English into two categories. When an
Australian speaks and we find it hard to understand them we don't call it "aussie English", or when a
person from England comes and we find their English hard to understand we don't call there
language "brit English". You see

Example Of English Essay

  • 1. Examples Of Prescriptive Grammar Grammar is a set of language rules and system. There are various types of grammar. Descriptive grammar is the rules that English speakers follow. Whereas, prescriptive grammar is the textbook rules in order to write and speak correctly. For example, the sentence I didn't go nowhere. is correct in descriptive grammar but incorrect in prescriptive grammar. "The part of the grammar that concerns the structure of phrases and sentences is called syntax. Rules of grammar determine how morphemes and words can combine to express a specific meaning" (Fromkin, & Rodman, 1998). Grammaticality is based on specific patterns determined by the syntactic rules. The rules are acquired or constructed unconsciously as children (Fromkin, & Rodman, 1998)....show more content... Although be/do/have usually function as auxiliaries, they can also work as main verbs in sentences (Teschner, & Evans, 1993). When be functions as a main verb it never allows Do support. However, both do and have require Do support when working as a main verb. A wh–word can function either as the subject in its wh/co question or the object in it (Teschner, & Evans, 1993). If wh–words are objects, the words move to the front of the sentence, which is called wh–fronting. Whereas, wh–words are subjects, the wh–movement doesn't occur because someone as a subject already appears at the front. Compare: Who did he call? (who functions as an object) Who called him? • 2. Essay about The History of English The History of English The most commonly spoken language in our day, would be English or as some people might call it " The Lingua Franca ". It is a language, which is taken almost a thousand years to evolve, mainly through its borrowings from other languages such as French and Latin. It is actually classified as part of the Germanic group of languages. Even though it is the most commonly spoken language today, it is not without its faults, which would be its phonetic symbols only, representing one sound and each sound would have its appropriate symbol. Most European languages are very similar to those spoken in India and Persia, assuming that most of the European peoples are descendants of the...show more content... (Lecture notes, M. Some of the words borrowed by the Germanic groups were: Mint: Minet, Street: strata via When the first English tribes came to settle in England they made contact with the people that had been part of the Roman Empire which probably spoke a form of Latin. Some of their words past in to the language of the new conquerors. (Lecture notes, M. Disney) In the sixth century St. Benedict reintroduced Christianity. As the religion spread English added a large number of Latin words to itself to express new ideas connected with the religion. However, this lead to the loss of grammatical gender of the language and therefore mixed the vocabulary. (Internet 1) In the eighth century the Danes made continual raids upon the English coasts which they later settled. They were then defeated by King Alfred the Great. A hundred years later another Danish King invaded England and managed to get his son, Canute, was put upon the English throne. These Danish invasions, however destructive they were, had quite a tremendous influence upon the English language. The English borrowed words such as skin, ill, get and leg. (Lecture notes, M. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. Why spend time studying a language and not mathematics or science? Well, there are some very good reasons for that. Never before, has a sound knowledge of languages been so important for finding a decent job. It is probably the first question they ask you if you apply for one. Someone who knows different languages will be preferred to someone with a more limited command of languages. Since the end of World War II, English has been taught at most West–European schools, even at most schools in the world. English is predestined to be the international language par excellence. Communication has never been more important to the world than it is now. Just think of the Internet. When you surf the Internet you immediately notice that the main language is English. Again we can see the influence of English in the world. Today, already half of the Europeans use English as their first or second language. "English has borrowed from everywhere and now goes everywhere." English may not be the language with the highest number of speakers in the world, but it is definitely the most important. You can reach a lot of people when you are able to communicate in English. If you like to go working abroad, learning English is a very good preparation. There are so many large countries where English is the official language, just think of Great Britain, Ireland, America, Canada... Even in our daily routine, English is all around. The role of the EAP tutor transcends the limited framework of language teaching, to involve institutional awareness and a detailed knowledge of specialized discourse. An EAP tutor needs to research and assist students in understanding and constructing texts in their disciplines and to actively 'engage with the disciplines'(Dudley–Evans and St John 1998). I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. • 8. Learning English as a Second Language Essay English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content... Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. • 9. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime. I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening. Furthermore, English can increase one's chances of being accepted in the exchange program by improving English. One of the requirements for the program is that people applying should have decent skills in the English language. Therefore, youth should take actions to improve English language before regret. Goals, motivation and attitude of youth are the effective ways to improve one's English language. Youth must set up a goal and found out the motivations before starting improving English. Goals can help youth to sort out what is important and what isn't. With goals, youth will only focus on the things that they want to achieve and spend precious time on them. For example, learn to write a good essay during three month set as one's goal, he or she will try their personal best and personal ways to enhance English writing skills during that given period. Motivation also plays a critical role in improving English language. McDonough S. (1983: 142) stated that "motivation of the student is one of the most important factors influencing their success or failure in learning the language." When studying English, youth might face a lot of different problems like environment problem, financial problem and so on. Motivation can help one to keep going despite the problems. If one keeps the motivation high and their eyes on the goal, no problem will seem insuperable. Besides that, attitude of youth towards improving English language also important. • 12. Reflective Essay On English 101 Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement. English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing, teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there's always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great writer. Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in one direction or another. • 13. Importance Of English Language Arts Essay What is English Language Arts? How does it differ from English, the language itself? English Language Arts is not a language, but it is the study of communicating thoughts. Every subject is important in school; each demonstrates a particular skill in education, but Language Arts builds complexity of a person's learning. Speaking, reading, and writing are all components of language arts. Having these skills are important; the first thing an interviewer notices is one's ability to articulate, and learning English Language Arts helps to obtain that goal. Being able to communicate, express one's self, and build life skills, are the reasons why English Language Arts is the most important subject in our education. First and foremost, the...show more content... However, as I learned more in language arts, I discovered others methods in writing. I know how to create stories by being imaginative, or write poetry by thinking creatively. Writing takes critical thinking, a general skill widely used in life. Subjects like math or science may use critical thinking, but it focuses more on applying knowledge in discussions rather than your own thoughts. Learning language arts have taught me to be more expressive; you will never know if your words could inspire someone one day. Lastly, English Language Arts build life skills that are crucial in life, to prepare yourself for the outside world. The first impression in an interview is how you present yourself, not how many achievements you have made. The way you speak, the way you act, the way you answer the questions, are parts of doing presentations. Senior portfolio is an example of a presentation in high school, and it is taught in English Language Arts class. The senior portfolio is probably one of the most important projects in one's whole high school career because it reflects your growth as a student and as an individual. Learning how to create a good portfolio from Language Arts class shows one's education level. In addition, companies recruit people with a good education, what you have learned in English Language Arts will prepare you in college, and your future career. • 14. American English Essays The question of whether or not English should be an official language has been a controversial topic since our country was founded. The English language is a tie that helps combine the many pieces of our society together. Our nation should not acclaim bilingualism, but should enfold English as the national language spoken in the United States, to secure the future unity of our nation. The United States is a nation composed of many immigrants from all around the world. We are a country of many cultural and racial ethnic groups that are constantly reacting to shape the American culture. The English language binds and unites immigrants with native– born Americans. English allows us to communicate with each other and discuss each...show more content... It is starting to become the international language as well. Speaking one language helps the ability of all backgrounds to communicate with one another. With so much diversity in the United States, we need something that joins us together. To speak a language that is used by the world, will help all Americans. English is the common bond of our community, and understanding it is the only way a citizen will be able to fully participate in democracy, business, and education. It is the language of international relations, as well as the language of our historical documents, of communication and of safety. By making English the official language, it will help to bring together Americans, not propel them farther apart. Many Americans are composed of Hispanic origin. With such a great number of the population speaking a second language, bilingualism will more than likely become an even more common occurrence in many states, in the future. This thought strongly associates with the job market of the United States. The second generation is becoming more bilingual, using one language for their home and the other for business. Workers are going to have to be able to communicate with one another to get the job done. Should native– born American employees learn to speak Spanish to communicate with other fellow employees? My answer would have to be, no. A system that accommodates immigrants in their native languages removes the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. The History of the English Language Essay The History of the English Language In this paper I will discuss where and how the English language originated and how it has spread to become one of the most spoken languages in the world. Before I started my research on my topic of choice, my original hypothesis was that the English language was started by a whole assortment of Germanic tribes invading England thousands of years ago. This ultimately became the goal of my paper, to see if Germanic tribes started the English language, or if it was started from some other tribes that I was not aware of. The history of the English language is of significance because English is spoken more frequently than any other language except Chinese, (Bright, 1992). A Germanic language, English...show more content... The Proto–Indo–European language was more complex than English today. It is possible to reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case, number, and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect, mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different grammatical forms of a word were often related by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to express such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The Proto–Indo–European language is thought to have been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, Indo–Iranian, Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek, Balto –Slavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish, German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of the Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the Indo–European family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). Theorists suggest that the horse was a major element of the Proto–Indo–European and the Indo–European Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. My experience throughout English 101 Essay My Experience throughout English 101 As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required. In the...show more content... Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Standard English Essay The question to ask is: 'Why not use Standard English all the time?' Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for mutual understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak, which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and its fast paced lifestyle. Using the Standard all the time would be exclusive of the linguistic freedom formed by the world beyond Standard English with varying ethnolects, but is also a...show more content... Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These modifications form non–standard dialects, transferring the speaker's cultural background and language to provide a better perception and reflection of identity. The falling intonation accompanied with interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as 'Gravy?', is the opposite of the rising intonation used for the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two communities due to the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun deletion in 'No like' ('I don't like it') is a feature of many ethnolects (Greek, Aboriginal English), and is differing from the Standard, yet still helps to get the message across. Ethnolects develop from Standard English, and helps to express a user's identity through their language use and in–group solidarity within the speech community. There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from communities of speakers all sharing the same use of language. Aboriginal English, a dialect of Australian English, remains a lingua franca for their speakers, used as a common language to communicate between tribes for mutual Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. The Dreaded English Class The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more writing experience in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Black English Essay example "Black English" Another Way to Classify Humans "To open your mouth В… You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary, your self–esteem, and alas, your future ". After reading the two essays, "From Outside, In" by Barbara Mellix and "If Black English Isn't a Language Then Tell Me, What Is?" by James Balwin, I came to realize a few things one of them being that the way we speak, is a means of identifying somebody's culture and background. Much in how a license can tell a person your name, age, were you live etc. a person can tell your race, what kind of education you have and were you are going in life just by hearing you talk. When slavery began, a time in human history that I assume many people would rather...show more content... She would never make me feel "shame" or any less because I was being myself. It must have been hard on Mellix to be told that your language and the language of your forefathers was not "proper" by you own mother. I believe that learning a language is fine for the right reasons. Expanding your knowledge or going to a different country, these are both legitimate reasons to learn a language. Learning a language because you will be ridiculed is not a proper reason. As Fanon stated in Mellix's essay to speak is, "В…above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization2". So what Fanon suggest is that when you take on a language it is to become part of the culture almost to change your identity, and I agree with that. I find when I meet somebody who can speak multiple languages I look at them with more respect than I would if they only spoke one. Not to say I would look down on a person who only speaks one language, I just find it admirable for somebody who would take the time to learn a new language. Throughout this essay you may have noticed quotations around the terms "black English" and "standard English". This is because I find it ridiculous to split English into two categories. When an Australian speaks and we find it hard to understand them we don't call it "aussie English", or when a person from England comes and we find their English hard to understand we don't call there language "brit English".
