Performance
Narrative
Conceptual
Challenge: can you find and describea video with 2 or all 3 types?
PART 2:

a. Genre (i.e. pop/indie/hip hop etc)
b. Symbolism (i.e. sometimes artistsymbolizewider
issues)

or intention where certain songs aredesigned to ‘move’
audiences)
d. For representation (i.e. artistrepresent themselves in a
certain way which might be their unique sellingpoint
(Rihanna often showcases herself as a sex object)

4. 10 (research) Assign 10: Andrew Goodwin theory
Summarise his main points of his theory and include screen shots of music
videos to support your points (could look at 3 example videos on the side)
1) Structure of music video
a. They followthe verse/chorus structure of the song
b. Lots of repetition of same images/shots (likesongrepeats
same lyrics/beats)
c. Providea visual link for the sound and for lyrics
d. Have closureby the end by tempo buildingto a climax and
then fades away
2) Role of the artist
a. Singer can be performer, narrator or character in video
b. Singer often looks atthe camera which address the
audience(direct address) which breaks the 4th wall
(breakingdiegesis)
3) Narrative Types
a. Illustrative
(Visual images supportlyrics of the song)
b. Amplification
(Visual images supportlyrics of the song and add new
layers of meaning)
c. Disjuncture
(Little connection between what we see and the lyricsof
song or images might oppose or contradictthe lyrics)

11 (research) Assign 11: Carol Vernallis theory
Her theory revolves around 4 concepts:
Editing, Camera movement and Framing, Narrative & Diegesis
(copy the following written points in a blog post and have a screen
grabs from one (or more) music video to support points)
1) Usual rules of continuity editingare broken to draw attention
to what is on screen
2) Edits can be done really obviously and noticeably to draw
attention to themselves such as wipes and special effects
3) Jump cuts are often used
4) A base-track master shot is frequently used to give the video
structure
You could look atfollowingvideos:

&
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r

&

5. 5) The camera moves or sways in time to the music
6) Speed of edit is manipulated –be it speeded up or slowed
down
7) MV’s arenot always balanced between narrativeand
performance
8) MV’s don’t always havea narrativeresolution atthe end
9) MV’s often pose questions in the narrativethatare not
answered within the video

The point of this task is to analyse costume/prop/locations of current
videos, ideally videos that are similar in what you might want to do
Challenge: choose a 2nd video (contrasting) to compare how the
costume/props/locations are different. In explanation, relate back to
artist, genre and target audience

13 (research) Assign 13: synergies
