3. My First Trip Survival Japanese!Lesson 1/3サバイバル日本語 My first trip to Japan was in Summer 2003. It was amazingly fun but I felt a lot like that guy from “Lost in Translation” after a while. I had no idea how to say what I wanted to say, even though I had taken a few classes in school, they were just too basic and I also forgot a lot of stuff. 5. Cultural Aspects:The Bow Survival Japanese!Lesson 1/3サバイバル日本語 Bowing is called ‘o-jigi’ in Japan. When it comes to meeting someone for the first time in Japanese culture, usually you bow instead of shake hands. In general, you want to bow at about a 30 degree angle, and usually hold until the other person raises their head up first as a sign of respect. You’ll almost always get a reply back. O genkidesuka? おげんきですか。 Are you doing well (today)? Hai, genkidesu. はい、げんきです。 Yes, I’m doing well! A famous ad by actress, UetoAyafor the energy drink ‘Oronamin C’ - She asks ‘GenkiHatsuratsu’? which loosely translates to are you feeling lively? Open usually 24 hours or very late for your eat and personal hygiene needs. 19. Cultural Aspects – Polite vs Casual Survival Japanese!Lesson 1/3サバイバル日本語 Basic rule of thumb is – if they’re older than you or someone you don’t know – always use polite form of speech. If they speak to you casually, and they are your age, generally you can speak casually to them too. Speaking too ‘polite’ to people who are speaking friendly or casual can seem rude or condescending.
