‘Recover First, Resolve Next’
2
Software-defined networking (SDN) and network
functions virtualization (NFV) have irreversibly changed
the industry views of not only network design and
operations but also service delivery and monetization in
the future.
IBM and Tech Mahindra, partners in the TM Forum
ZOOM “Catalyst” project ‘Recover First, Resolve Next’
have developed a solution that envisages closed loop
control for managing hybrid networks, demonstrating
Service Level Agreement (SLA) driven closed loop
control, for automated fault recovery and remediation of
service performance issues. The synergies between IBM
and Tech Mahindra enable the integration of Virtual
Network function (VNFs) with the OSS largely provided
by market leaders like IBM. Tech Mahindra here is
uniquely positioned to offer inter-operability and VNF
certification testing, performance tuning, systems
integration and SDN/NFV network transformation
services.
The catalyst demonstrates automated end-to-end
service assurance collecting the appropriate
performance analytics, fault and providing closed loop
fault recovery to maintain service levels for end-
customers. This joint solution provides seamless
integration between the OSS and a multi-vendor, multi-
function Network Function Virtualization (NFV) layer, with
management of a hybrid network comprising traditional
and virtualized network infrastructure.
Performance Management (PM)
– PM of VNF itself, i.e. vEPC,
– PM of infrastructure (physical and virtual)
– Customer experience metrics
Scaling Up/Down based on PM
– Policy Management
– Triggering Mechanisms

Solution Architecture
The Solution consists of the VNF, MANO as defined by ETSI and the OSS as depicted above, being deployed on a COT’s H/W
with a KVM Hypervisor as NFV Infrastructure.
The VNF integrated is Tech Mahindra’s home grown Virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) solution that scales independently for
control and data plane traffic surges. Tech Mahindra’s vEPC has a custom built VNF manager that provides seamless
connectivity to Virtual Infrastructure Manager and Orchestrator for carrier grade requirements of virtual network functions.
– Applications run on platforms, virtualized over KVM hypervisor
– 3GPP compliant interfaces for independent deployment of VNFs (S/P-GW, MME); ETSI NFV compliant interfaces for
deployment of vEPC
– Independent and elastic scaling of Control and User Plane capacities
– Combined S/P-GW for reduced latencies
– Improved data plane performance through DPDK Integration
– Collapsed control plane interface for reduced signaling overhead
– Integrated with OpenStack virtualization platform and with 3rd party NFV Orchestrators
The vEPC integrated with IBM’s NetCool Suite provides an End-to-End automated performance and fault management. IBM
Netcool Operations Insight helps unify, reduce and prioritize your business service impacting events by using real-time and
historical analytics. With the integration of these leading edge IBM analytics technologies, IBM Netcool Operations Insight
powered by OMNIbus helps IT operators to better understand their IT operations and infrastructure management, thereby:
– Improving operational agility with real time analytics
– Accelerating problem identification and resolution with search analytics
– Improving operational efficiency with historical analytics
