Alveoli- an air cell of the lungs, formed by the terminal dilation of tiny air
passageways.
Anaerobic respiration- breaks down sugar or organic compounds.
Bronchi- either of the two main branches of the trachea.
Epiglottis- a thin valve like, cartilaginous structure that covers the glottis
during swallowing, preventing the entrance of food and drink into the
larynx
Larynx- a muscular and cartilaginous structure lined with muscular
membrane at the upper part of the trachea in humans, in which the vocal
cords are located.
Exhalation- the act if exhaling
Inhalation- the act or instance of inhaling
Gas exchange- the diffusion of gases from an area of higher concentration of an area of a lower
concentration, especially in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and
its environment
Lung- two sack like respiratory organs in the thorax of humans and higher vertebrates
Oxygen debt- the body's oxygen deficiency resulting from strenuous physical activity.
Pharynx: the tube or cavity with its surrounding membrane and muscles that connects
the mouth and nasal passage with the esophagus.
Pleural membrane: the lateral scleritis of the the thorax.
Respiration: the act respiration inhalation and exhalation of air breathing.
Respiratory control center: where it allows you to breath
Lungs
Allows air to pass through to the rest of the body. It hers the rest of the body. Muscles of respiration
Helps you inhale and helps you breath in and out so you can be able to breath.
Trachea: the tube in humans and other air breathing vertebrates everything from the larynx to the bronchi serving as the
principal passage for conveying air to and from the lungs the wind pipe.
Vital capacity: the greatest amount of air that can be forced from the lungs after maximum inhalation.
Lungs
Allows air to pass through to the rest of the body. It hers the rest of the body. Muscles of respiration
Helps you inhale and helps you breath in and out so you can be able to breath.
Ribs: the ribs protect the lungs while they expand.
Diaphragm: expands downwards to allow the lungs to expand as we inhale.
The nose and nasal cavity form the main external opening for the respiratory system and are the first section of the
body’s airway.
The mouth, also known as the oral cavity, is the secondary external opening for the respiratory tract.
List and explained the functions of the organ system
List and explained the functions of the organ system
The pharynx, also known as the throat, is a muscular funnel that extends to the end of the
esophagus.
The larynx, also known as the voice box, is a short section of the airway that connects
to the trachea.
The trachea, or windpipe, is a 5-inch long tube made of C-shaped cartilage rings.
The lungs are a pair of large, spongy organs found in the thorax lateral to the heart and superior to
the diaphragm
Surrounding the lungs are sets of muscles that are able to cause air to be inhaled or exhaled from
the lungs.

the lungs exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide. Imbalances in the exchange of these
gases can lead to dangerous respiratory disorders, such as respiratory acidosis or
My questions
" Disease and conditions of the respiratory system fall into two categories :
viruses such as influenza, bacterial pneumonia and the new enterovirus
respiratory virus that has been diagnosed in children; and chronic diseases, such
as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ) "
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease
COPD disrupts the airflow in and out of your lungs and reduces your lung function. COPD
may include one or both of these conditions

Lung cancer
Lung cancer is often associated with smoking, but the disease can affect non-
smokers as well. Every year, about 16,000 to 24,000 Americans die of lung cancer,
even though they have never smoked, according to the American Cancer Society.
Like all cancers, lung cancer is caused by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells.
Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. Even though some people are at higher risk than others
anyone can get pneumonia.the reality is that you can get pneumonia while going about your daily
routine. The cause of bacterial pneumonia isn't always pneumococcal bacteria but they are the
most common cause.
