2. What is MRI?
o MRI, or magnetic resonance
imaging, is a means of “seeing”
inside the body in order for
doctors to find certain diseases
or abnormal conditions.
3. MRI
o MRI does not rely on the type of radiation used for an x-
ray or computer tomography (CT) scan.
o The MRI examination requires specialized equipment
that uses a powerful, constant magnetic field, rapidly
changing local magnetic fields, radiofrequency
energy, and dedicated equipment including a powerful
computer to create very clear pictures of internal body
structures.
4. Is MRI Safe?
o MRI has been shown to be extremely safe as long as
proper safety precautions are taken.
o In general, the MRI procedure produces no pain and
causes no known short-term or long-term tissue damage
of any kind.
o The MRI magnet is always ON, even if there is no
examination in process.
5. Items or Things that may create a
health hazard or Other Problems during
an MRI Exam:
o Pacemaker
o Metal Implant
o Implanted drug infusion device
o Foreign metal objects, especially if in or near the eye
o Shrapnel or bullet wounds
o Permanent cosmetics or tattoos
o Dentures/teeth with magnetic keepers
o Medication patch that contains metal foil.
6. Metal
o For patient and staff safety, no
metal objects are allowed in the
MRI room
o Special tools, cleaning
equipment, and even oxygen
containers must be used when
entering the room
7. Warning Sign
o Each x-ray room has a
X-RAY
warning sign above the door
o When this light is on, the x-ray
is in use and no one should
enter the room
