3. Our Mission We partner with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children's literature, constructing schools, providing education to girls and establishing computer labs. We seek to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education empowers people to improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries and future generations. Through the opportunities that only education can provide, we strive to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.

What questions do you have about past RtR M&E?
The Problem: Libraries are virtually nonexistent in many communities throughout the developing world where children's books are considered luxury items. Our Solution: Room to Read creates child friendly learning environments where students find books that expand their world and help equip them with critical life skills. In many places we work, schools do not have a single book that is available to children to encourage their independent learning, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong passion for reading. Our Reading Room Program addresses this need by establishing school libraries and creating a fun and interactive learning environment, complete with as many as 300 to 1000 age-appropriate local language and English children's books, furniture, games, puzzles, and posters. The vast majority of our children's books are donated or purchased at a high discount from large publishers such as Scholastic Inc. This way, we are able to ship thousands of books at a time to our partner countries. Furthermore, as part of our Reading Room Program, we provide three years of ongoing support, including library training on proper library implementation, and the provision of additional children's books. Reading Room Results: To date, Room to Read has donated over 2.2 million children’s books and published an additional 2 million books to fill our library shelves! Room to Read has established over 5,200 libraries in our partner countries with plans to establish an additional 1,900 in 2008. These libraries come in all shapes and sizes, but have a very common element - our local team works with the community to determine how to best provide access to children's books and create a child-friendly reading environment.

The lessons we learned from the pilot process will inform various next steps in the development of Room to Read’s M&E system. As we consider ways to leverage those lessons we will……. Hire M&E Program Officers in each country who will help to develop the M&E system, build on appropriate methods, and manage the logistics of a monitoring process in each country.
