• 7.RP.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio
and percent problems.
• 7.EE.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different
forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and
how quantities are related.
• 7.EE.3 Solve multistep real-life and mathematical problems
posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form
(whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools
strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with
numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and
assess the reasonableness of answers using mental
computation and estimation strategies.

Mathematical Practices
1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4 Model with mathematics.

Step-by-Step Example
1. Drew wants to buy exercise equipment that costs $140 and the
sales tax is 5.75%. What is the total cost of the equipment?
Add sales tax to the regular price.
First, find the sales tax. Let t represent the sales tax.
part = percent whole Write the percent equation.
5.75% = 0.0575t = 0.0575 140
t = 8.05
Next, add the sales tax to the regular price. $8.05 + $140 = $148.05
Multiply.
Add the percent of the tax to 100%.
100% + 5.75% = 105.75% Add the percent of tax to 100%.
Let t represent the total.
part = percent whole Write the percent equation.
105.75% = 1.0575t = 1.0575 140
t = 8.05 Multiply.
7 The total cost of the exercise equipment is $148.05.
Answer

A limited-edition soccer ball costs $30, and the
sales tax is 6%. What is the total cost?

Step-by-Step Example
2. A customer wants to tip 15% on a restaurant bill that is $35.
What will be the total bill with tip?
Add the tip to the regular price.
First, find the tip. Let t represent the tip.
Write the percent equation.
15% = 0.15t = 0.15 35
t = 5.25
Next, add the tip to the bill.
$5.25 + $35 = $40.25
Multiply.
Add the percent of tip to 100%.
100% + 15% = 115% Add the percent of tip to 100%.
Write the percent equation.
115% = 1.15t = 1.15 35
t = 40.25 Multiply.
7
Using either method, the total cost of the bill with tip is $40.25.
Add.
The total cost is 115% of the bill. Let t represent the total.
part = percent whole
part = percent whole
Answer

Whitney’s bill at a diner came to $26.00. What
would she pay if she included a 20% tip?

Step-by-Step Example
3. A haircut costs $20. Sales tax is 4.75%. Is $25
sufficient to cover the haircut with tax and a 15% tip?
Sales tax is 4.75% and the tip is 15%, so together
they will be 19.75%.
Let t represent the tax and tip.
0.15 + 0.0475 = 0.1975t = 0.1975 20
t = 3.95 Multiply.
$20 + $3.95 = $23.95 Add.
Since $23.95 < $25, $25 is sufficient to cover the
total cost.
part = percent whole
Answer
Need Another Example?
A manicure costs $18. The sales tax is 8.25%.
You want to tip 20%. Is $22 sufficient to cover
the manicure, tax, and tip? Explain.
no; Sample answer: 28.25% of $18 is $5.09
and $18 + $5.09 = $23.09.

A store pays $56 for a GPS navigation system.
The markup is 25%. Find the selling price.
4.
First, find the markup. Let m represent the markup.
Write the percent equation.
25% = 0.25m = 0.25 56
m = 14 Multiply.
Next, add the markup to the amount the store pays.
$14 + $56 = $70 Add.
The selling price of the GPS navigation system is $70.
part = percent whole

Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.

  • 8. 1 Need Another Example? 2 3 4 5 6 Step-by-Step Example 1. Drew wants to buy exercise equipment that costs $140 and the sales tax is 5.75%. What is the total cost of the equipment? Add sales tax to the regular price. First, find the sales tax. Let t represent the sales tax. part = percent whole Write the percent equation. 5.75% = 0.0575t = 0.0575 140 t = 8.05 Next, add the sales tax to the regular price. $8.05 + $140 = $148.05 Multiply. Add the percent of the tax to 100%. 100% + 5.75% = 105.75% Add the percent of tax to 100%. Let t represent the total. part = percent whole Write the percent equation. 105.75% = 1.0575t = 1.0575 140 t = 8.05 Multiply. 7 The total cost of the exercise equipment is $148.05.
  • 9. Answer Need Another Example? A limited-edition soccer ball costs $30, and the sales tax is 6%. What is the total cost? $31.80
  • 10. 1 Need Another Example? 2 3 4 5 6 Step-by-Step Example 2. A customer wants to tip 15% on a restaurant bill that is $35. What will be the total bill with tip? Add the tip to the regular price. First, find the tip. Let t represent the tip. Write the percent equation. 15% = 0.15t = 0.15 35 t = 5.25 Next, add the tip to the bill. $5.25 + $35 = $40.25 Multiply. Add the percent of tip to 100%. 100% + 15% = 115% Add the percent of tip to 100%. Write the percent equation. 115% = 1.15t = 1.15 35 t = 40.25 Multiply. 7 Using either method, the total cost of the bill with tip is $40.25. Add. The total cost is 115% of the bill. Let t represent the total. part = percent whole part = percent whole
  • 11. Answer Need Another Example? Whitney’s bill at a diner came to $26.00. What would she pay if she included a 20% tip? $31.20
  • 12. 1 Need Another Example? 2 3 4 5 6 Step-by-Step Example 3. A haircut costs $20. Sales tax is 4.75%. Is $25 sufficient to cover the haircut with tax and a 15% tip? Sales tax is 4.75% and the tip is 15%, so together they will be 19.75%. Let t represent the tax and tip. 0.15 + 0.0475 = 0.1975t = 0.1975 20 t = 3.95 Multiply. $20 + $3.95 = $23.95 Add. Since $23.95 < $25, $25 is sufficient to cover the total cost. part = percent whole
  • 13. Answer Need Another Example? A manicure costs $18. The sales tax is 8.25%. You want to tip 20%. Is $22 sufficient to cover the manicure, tax, and tip? Explain. no; Sample answer: 28.25% of $18 is $5.09 and $18 + $5.09 = $23.09.
  • 14. 1 Need Another Example? 2 3 4 5 6 Step-by-Step Example A store pays $56 for a GPS navigation system. The markup is 25%. Find the selling price. 4. First, find the markup. Let m represent the markup. Write the percent equation. 25% = 0.25m = 0.25 56 m = 14 Multiply. Next, add the markup to the amount the store pays. $14 + $56 = $70 Add. The selling price of the GPS navigation system is $70. part = percent whole
  • 15. Answer Need Another Example? The wholesale cost for shirts bought by a sporting goods store is $20 per shirt. The shirts will be marked up 40%. What will be the selling price? $28
