  8. 8. Qualities of the Parent 1. Inspire respect & confidence 2. Demonstrate high values and moral standards 3. Communicate with understanding & respect 4. Motivate & create excitement in learning 5. Demand commitment & rigor 6. Never compromise on quality & principles Remember: Children listen with their eyes
  9. 9. How are you on this list? How do you know?
  10. 10. Guide not Force 1. Don’t live out your fantasies through your children 2. They’re individuals. Not your alter ego. 3. Don’t force them to do what you couldn't do or what you think is best for them 4. Let them realize their own potential. Not yours. Our generation made this world – not theirs
  11. 11. Reality 1. They belong to Allah‫,ﷻ‬ not to you 2. You don’t own them, you hold them in trust 3. Allah‫ﷻ‬ will hold you accountable for them, not them for you 4. They are your Thawaab-ul-Jaariya And your dua is their most powerful resource

  13. 13. 3 – Key Steps 1. Accept that you need to change 2. Own up to your responsibility 3. Make Tawba and seek forgiveness Prepare to take the pain
  14. 14. COMMUNICATE 1. Listen 2. Reflect 3. Seek clarity 4. Listen again And again

  16. 16. Then Why? Do you imagine that telling and forcing will work?
  17. 17. New Way 1. Seek to understand them 2. Support them 3. Show them why your way is better 4. Show them WiiFM Be prepared to work hard
  18. 18. Justice 1. Involve them in decisions that concern them 2. Seek their opinion seriously 3. Understand their fears 4. Get their buy-in to an exciting future 5. Challenge them and show the benefit Otherwise prepare to fail
  19. 19. Teach Values first? •Why Values? • Inspire and motivate • Sustain through hardship • Provide a sense of purpose • Create resilience • Anchor self esteem and identity Values can’t be legislated. They must be inculcated
