YOUR BRAIN IS YOUR TOOL FOR CHANGE
From: “Making Your Mind Your Mentor”©,
A seminar by Steven R. Campbell
                                                                                          November, 2008

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR MIND YOUR MENTOR—YOUR TRUSTED FRIEND AND GUIDE —
WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IT DOES, AND HOW IT DOES IT.
FIRST: WHAT DOES THE BRAIN DO?
IT DIRECTS YOUR LIFE. CHANGE DOES NOT HAPPEN AS THE RESULT OF WHAT YOU DO. CHANGE
HAPPENS AS THE RESULT OF HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU THINK.

THE BRAIN IS A “LITERAL” MECHANISM. WHATEVER YOU TELL IT, IT ACCEPTS AS LITERAL TRUTH.
It does not care what is good for you, or what you like or want, or how you feel about anything. It
has no ability to make judgments. Whatever IS, is fine with the brain. It only wants to be
            comfortable.

SECOND: HOW DOES IT WORK?
THE BRAIN CAN BE DIVIDED INTO THREE MAJOR FUNCTIONING COMPONENTS:
THE CONSCIOUS is our link to the outside world.
Everything we see, hear, think and feel comes in to us here. It is then recorded and stored forever
            in the Subconscious.
THE SUBCONSCIOUS contains all of your self-images, and you have thousands of them.
How you see yourself as a student is one, or how your see yourself as an athlete is another.
THE CREATIVE SUBCONCIOUS is the worker bee.
Its job is to make sure that what you do lines up with your self-images. So if you see yourself as a
good athlete, it makes sure you are. However, if you see yourself as a bad athlete, your brain will
make sure you screw up. On other words, whatever you do will always line up with your subcon-
scious’ picture of who and what you are.
YOUR SELF-IMAGE ALSO ACTS AS A “COMFORT ZONE”.
When the Conscious suggests a self-image that does not match up with the way you really are,
your Subconscious says, “Whoa! We got a problem here.” and your Creative Subconscious starts
finding ways to make your pictures match up again.
….. And it will do that by following whichever is the strongest image.
Not the easiest one — the strongest one.

                                            Subconscious Creative Subconscious

                                       Self-Image 1. Maintain Comfort Zone.
                                                                       2. Follow the Strongest
                                                    Comfort Zone
                                                                               Image.
YOUR BRAIN IS YOUR TOOL FOR CHANGE

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR NEW IMAGE YOUR STRONGEST IMAGE

Your strongest picture is the way you are right now. The trick is to create a picture of the
future as you want it to be…. And then bring it into the present by telling yourself it is so
NOW. It does not matter that it isn’t true yet; Just keep thinking about it, and it will
become the stronger image.

Your Creative Subconscious will start to find ways to close the gap between the new image and
your reality. Which way will it go? Always, it will follow the strongest picture. Not the easiest one
– the strongest one. It may take a while to get there… but get there it will!

Step 1:
Pick 2 or 3 things you would like to change about yourself. Don’t try to change everything at
once. Concentrate on what your self images are – not the things you do. Do not think about how
you’ll accomplish the change. Let your creative subconscious find the how.

Step 2.
On a 3x5 card, write down a simple affirmative that says what each new self image is.
(Not: I’ll try, or I’ll stop, or I will, or I should, or I want to……… Say, I am, I do, it makes me happy
that I…) Stay with positive images, and keep them in the present tense. Put these affirmative
statements somewhere you’ll see them every day. Read them a lot — and picture yourself living
them.

Step 3.
When you make a mistake (and you will make many of them), your subconscious will try to drag
out a long list of mistakes you’ve made in the past, parading for your review all the dumb things
you’ve ever done in your life. You’ll hear a little voice saying to you, “See, that’s just like you. I
knew you would do that. You always do that. You’ve always been a loser, in fact you were the
slowest reader in second grade. Etc., etc., etc.”
Don’t buy it! Hold up your hand to yourself, and say, “Stop! That isn’t like me any
more. The next time, I intend to….” And say in your mind what you wish you’d done
       instead.
Do this even if you feel silly. It doesn’t matter that you didn’t do it this time. There is
no limit to the number of next times you get. You get as many next times as you need.
AND TEAR UP THAT MENTAL LIST! Don’t ever look at it again. Whenever you
see it coming, go right to “Stop! That isn’t like me any more. The next time I intend to…”

If you think you can do something… you are right.
If you think you can’t do something… you are right.
We move toward and become like what we think.
