- Valor de Pride para ARA Actualmente las instituciones colombianas están poniendo gran enfásis en alinear sus esfuerzos de conservación con el trabajo realizado por otras agencias. Ellas están también priorizando la participación local en el diseño e implementación de programas de manejo de cuencas (mencionar Luis Alfonso). Rare está buscando trabajar con socios a fin de expandir un enfoque social en manejo de cuencas que resulta sostenible justamente por el empoderamiento local en el que está basado. Este sistema puede en buena medida pagar por si mismo en términos de beneficios generados en calidad de agua pero también brindar otros importantes co-beneficios Protección de franjas riparias no sólo beneficia el flujo de agua sino además protege la inmensa biodiversidad colombiana Movilizar comunidad en proyectos de gobernanza del agua para el bien común es una buena receta para generar confianza en lugares donde la falta de confianza en instituciones públicas es común. Más bosque incrementa los insumos disponibles para la producción de plantas hidroeléctricas (Leo Saenz) Propietarios y campesinos con mejoras en su calidad de vida se vuelven más resilientes ante el cambio climático Los ARAs conectan los distintos objetivos de las entidades de energía, agricultura, agua y conservación El enfoque de Rare ha demostrado reducir el tiempo necesario para obtener resultados y cambios de comportamiento de un periodo de 7 años a tan sólo 3 años. Es una herramienta que puede insertarse en otras iniciativas nacionales, desde planes de manejo de cuencas hasta los fondos urbanos que TNC ha cultivado Value of Pride for ARACurrently Colombia's institutions for watershed managment are putting a high emphasis on aligning the work of conservation with the work of its agricultural agencies. They are also prioritizing public participation in the design and implementation of watershed management. (Mention Luis Alfonso). Rare is looking for partners to spread a system of social management of watersheds that is sustainable beccause of public ownership. This system can largely pay for itself in the benefits of clean water, but brings immensely valuable co-benefits: 1. Createing streamside habitat protection not only cleans the water but protects Colombia's immense biodiversity2. Mobilizing communities in projects of water self-reliance for the common good is the perfect recipe to build trust in regions where distrust of government is common.3. More forest will increase energy available to hydropower, according to the best science (Leo Saenz)4. Farmers getting livlihood improvements will have more resilience to climate change5. Reciprocal agreements connect the goals of energy, agriculture and water agencies in the places where something can be done together.6. Rare's approach has been shown to accelerate the time needed to obtain results in water quality from 6-7 years to 3 yearrs. It is a tool that can be built into all national initiatives, from the government's plan for a national system of ecosystem protection, to the urban water funds that TNC has cultivated. ******FOR ARA STRATEGY MASTER DECK In the past, corporaciones would just “take land away” – in contrast, the approach we are teaching the water companies to do allows them to have private conservation on land without kicking them off, and more valuable biodiversity and is cheaper since they don’t have to have ppl protecting land full time from squatters. Some birds need some land that we wont’ get with ARAs, and some big cities need large water funds in urban areas, and we are happy TNC is doing that. IN rural areas, we are proving mechanism to implement the funds. Complementary to burying land and mainstreamed into water companies a way to meet Rare’s conservation objectives with resources that already exists in budgets for water protection.
