1. Aluminium Anodizing for Longer Lasting
Products
There are several ways to add a protective coating to aluminium that will help it last for
a longer period of time than would be the case if it was not treated. Through aluminium
anodizing, the metal is less sensitive to various substances which cause corrosion,
thereby increasing its life.
When aluminium is anodized, oxide becomes aluminium hydrate, a substance resistant
to assorted chemicals. It will not easily react with alkalis and acids, making it more
durable than regular aluminium. Many things are made from aluminium such as
utensils, airplane bodies, buildings and more. There are also several ways to anodize
the metal. One old way is to use chromic acid which creates a thin, opaque film. This
makes the product more ductile and soft, but difficult to dye. Treatment is required
before painting such a surface.
Byproducts of aluminium anodizing are used in the cosmetics industry and elsewhere.
Anodized metal is also economically efficient. Firms can add color to the finished
product, or even a company logo. The process can be done domestically on a smaller
scale than would be required industrially. There are inexpensive kits for use at home
which will make aluminium items around the house stronger so that they last for a long
time. The instructions come with notes on adding a special matte finish to make your
item unique.
Aluminium anodizing makes surfaces harder and thicker, but you can always decide
how thick you want it to be. Moreover, you can select the means of anodizing such
as using oxalic acid, sulphuric acid or chromic acid. The only down side is that heat
may cause anodized aluminium to crack. Overall, however, anodizing is a financially
worthwhile way to limit aluminium corrosion and give products greater longevity, which
is also environmentally friendly as this reduces waste.
