WhySoShy
Year 7
Charlie, Lauren, and Leah
Who? Shy Year 7 Students
What? We are worried about
presenting in front of big
audiences at this year’s
AppsForGood finals (stage fright)
When? 23 June 2014
Where? At the Barbican
Why? We want to present our
elevator pitch, but we get very
nervous in front of people.
Problem:
Lauren is full of great ideas and is
very smart, but she get very quiet
and shy when talking to others
(especially with a big audience)
How can she do her elevator pitch?
Question:
How can someone who is shy and
has stage fright talk in front of a
large group of people?
Key Insight Statement:
You can practice your speech, but
it is different when you are in front
of a crowd.
You can talk in a group, but the
shy students want to be able to
contribute.
The mind work in strange ways
look at the “King’s Speech”, an app
that relaxes shy speakers and
helps them present would be
great.
Mini Elevator Pitch:
Our team, WhySoShy is
developing an app to help shy
people have the confidence to
present in front of an audience.
The app does this by displaying
the written speech one word at a
time and above the word is a
photo of the shy presenter's best
friend. The idea is the shy
presenter can focus on the words
and the photo of her friend instead
of the big crowd of people
listening. That relaxes the shy
speaker and helps them make a
speak with confidence.
User Profiles:
Carla: one of my old friend’s is
Carla she can speak to people and
she doesn’t go red until she gets
told to stand up and say what she
wrote for something. So, she is
only shy when she gets told to do
a speech. That is because she
doesn’t really like doing that
unless she is really confident on
topic.
Back in primary she loved asking if
she could say what she wrote on
her white board and her book and
she always asked the teacher if
she could read with her best
friend. So, she can speak in front
of people (especially with her best
friend). We both just love reading!
Competitors that already exist in
the market. This app using
relaxation tricks to overcome stage
fright
How the app will help with
stage fright and shyness…
How the app will help with
stage fright and shyness…
Feasibility:
This is a very easy app to make.
The first version only needs…
1. Take a photo and record the
friends details.
2. Import or type a speech and
display it only word at a time.
3. Select and play speech at
chosen speed
Customer Pledges:
All my friends said they would get
the app, but no one really wants to
pay for it.
Marketing Strategy:
This is a simple app that could be
used by anyone who needs to
speak in front of people.
We plan to promote this app by
offering it to the
2015 Apps for Good finalists.
(They are going to need it!)
We may also encourage politicians,
CEOs, and others to use the app at
their next speaking event.
Wildcard:
We had lots of help with our idea
from parents, teachers, students,
and the Apps for Good Community.
Thank you all.
