8. What is poverty? Poverty is not simply “a lack of jobs or income”, but rather “a web of interwoven problems—poor schooling, bad health, family troubles, racism, crime and unemployment—that can lock families out of opportunity, permanently”. Quoted from Joan Walsh’s “Stories of Community Building and the Future of Urban America”, commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation and published in 1996. .
10. What determines poverty? Lack of adequate housing not enough money for food no transportation unemployment alcohol addiction lack of cultural identity too many children chemical dependency chronic depression no safety net poor hygiene low self esteem no job skills no community support too much red tape in access to services racism We call these Determinants of Poverty.

Faced with an overwhelming number of options, we could have done a lot of things. Taking what AECF does best and matching it up with the need in the communities, we chose to focus on three key areas….
We are really excited about the work we have been able to accomplish…and, with Mikaela coming on board, we are in a better position to share the lessons learned in addition to the work our grantees are producing…. Specifically, around data-based advocacy, this year…. Point out the work NOTE: ADD FES slide and FIELD BLDG slide

These words are at core/heart of our work.
These words are at core/heart of our work.
The story of how we got here and what informs where we are going is best understood by taking a quick look at the past three years.
And now, in collaboration with our key partners (xyz), we have a lot more info about the true picture. And we know people are hungry for this data—for several years now, 2 nd most downloaded report off website. I’m highlighting on this slide some of the key indicators – but I really encourage you to take a closer look at the report (chapter 3) gives more comprehensive look

There are many ways we approach this complex set of issues – here’s how we have chosen to do so in a strategic and respectful/honoring way
So these are obviously vulnerable kids and families living in both urban and rural places --- many of our MC sites. So there is a call to action 3 years ago we didn’t know what the call sounded like, and we got involved in this work to understand what we might do. We discovered there was a lot to do. We also discovered that there are clear benefits to AECF and the world of philanthropy; gains to be made by engaging in this work—list above.
I wanted to share a few words from the people we work with and seek to support. We begin there because that’s where we start the work – listening to them, learning from them, determining the course of action based on their aspirations and challenges. We hear what they know, and develop strategies to secure what they need. So before we move into sharing accomplishments, connections to our work, the vision moving forward. In other words, before we move into the details, I want to tell you a story about when I sat down with Antonio….Mikaela and I asked him questions….his eyes twinkled when he looked at us and said, QUOTE ABOVE. So what people are telling us is that they are strong, wealthy in so many ways, and that they know that there is much to be done to build healthy communities. That’s what we at AECF can do – standing shoulder to shoulder with the people who are the real “experts.”
