Environmental Catalysis Module: Students examines different types of catalytic systems, including heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Depending on the knowledge they gained during activities, the students are then asked to design their projects.
Our Project:
Converting carbon dioxide into oxygen using calcium oxide and metal catalyst
Factory’s smoke contains many harmful and dangerous materials for both human beings and the environment, this project will not only save our ozone layer but it will save many people in the future generation securing a breath full future for humanity.
Environmental catalyst, Converting carbon dioxide into oxygen using catalysts IDM8
1. Converting carbon dioxide into oxygen using
calcium oxide and metal catalyst
Environmental Catalysis Module
Group Name :Silver
2. • Introduction
• Activity 1: The decomposition of H2O2 using yeast as a
catalyst
• Activity 2: Searching for Catalysts
• Activity 3: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Acid
Catalysis
• Activity 4: Using a Metal Catalyst to Degrade an Air
Pollutant
• Activity 5: Using Photocatalysis to Degrade a Water
Pollutant
• Design Project: Designing a Catalytic System
3. • Catalysis is the increase in the rate of a chemical reaction
due to the participation of an additional substance called
a catalyst With a catalyst, reactions occur faster and with
less energy. Because catalysts are not consumed, they are
recycled.
4. Activity 1: The decomposition of H2O2
using yeast as a catalyst
• Tools
• Food color
• Beaker
• Graduated cylinder
• soap
• Yeast
• Hydrogen peroxide

5. The decompostion of H2O2 steps
H2O2 Yeast Yeast and food color and soap
H2O2 added to the yeast and
the mixture of food color
6. Conclusion
The H2O2 reacted with the mixture very fast because
of the yeast that worked as a catalyst and the
cylinder became warm which means that the
reaction is an exothermic reaction
7. Activity 2: Searching for Catalysts
Natural catalysts
Pepsin enzyme
Pepsin is one of three principal protein-degrading, or proteolytic,
enzymes in the digestive system, the other two being chymotrypsin and
trypsin. The three enzymes were among the first to be isolated in
crystalline form. During the process of digestion, these enzymes, each of
which is specialized in severing links between particular types of amino
acids, collaborate to break down dietary proteins into their components,
i.e., peptides and amino acids, which can be readily absorbed by the
intestinal lining. Pepsin is most efficient in cleaving peptide bonds
between hydrophobic and preferably aromatic amino acids such as
phenylalanine, tryptophan and tyrosine.
9. Act. 3: Using a Heterogeneous

First we boiled the water
Second put the
heterogeneous catalyst in the
beaker number 2 and the
beaker number 3
11. Third put all the beakers in
the hot water inside the cups
Fourth measure the ph

18. Design Project: Designing a Catalytic
System
( converting carbon dioxide to oxygen using calcium
oxide and metal as a catalyst
CO2
CaO

and heat
O2 H2O
CaO is one of a lot of catalysts we used while we were doing an experiment with
al-bairaq like 1- yeast 2- TiO 3-Fe .
We used CaO to convert the harmful Co2 To useful CaCo3
19. Why O2
Oxygen is one of the most elements which institutions and human need
at the present time because it is involved in many of the usages like:-
Respiration
Of all the uses of oxygen, sustaining life is the most important. Oxygen is
needed by all living organisms. Through a process known as aerobic
respiration
1- Industrial applications (Industries use the gas for cutting, welding and
melting metals)
2- Health applications (oxygen supplies are kept in stock. These are
provided to patients who have difficulty breathing-- Oxygen gas is used
to destroy bacteria)
20. 1. Get rid of carbon dioxide, which is one of the most
important environmental pollutants (CO2)
2. Reduce carbon dioxide damage, especially on health
3. Produce oxygen that is needed in many institutions
21. • we measured the ph level for the oxygen while using
CaO and copper turnings and copper granules and iron
fillings
1- we burned some papers to produce carbon dioxide
while co2 was burning the metal catalyst and CaO was on the heater
2- a hose was connected between them every three minutes we put
the hose in 8ml of water
3- we waited 30sec then put the ph meter in side the water .

copper tairing
CaO and Copper
granules was the best
catalyst because the ph
level was near 7 which
means that oxygen was
produced and the ph
level of the oxygen is 7
CaO and iron fillings was
good at first but it
started poising at the
end and it gave us a
negative products
23. Recommendations
we recommend for all the institutions to implement this idea
because it has a lot of benefit for Qatar and the other countries in
the world
we advice every body to use CaO and copper granules because
CaO is very effective catalyst in positive way and every body can
afford it , copper granules is the best thing to use as a catalyst
because it don’t poising until the and it can be used for a long
time
Finally we recommend every body to take care of the
environment and the earth because it is our home so we have to
protect the earth from every thing that harm the earth
Notes de l'éditeur
Disadv: it is hard to get the reactant to the surface
By product may deactivate (poison the catalyst)
