3. MODERN OLYMPIC
Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia,
Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in
Athens in 1896
Although the ancient Games were staged in Olympia, Greece, from 776 BC through 393 AD,
it took 1503 years for the Olympics to return. The first modern Olympics were held in
Athens, Greece, in 1896. The man responsible for its rebirth was a Frenchman named Baron
Pierre de Coubertin, who presented the idea in 1894

1 The Olympic flag has a white background, with five interlaced rings in
the centre: blue, yellow, black, green and red. This design is symbolic; it
represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the
six colours are those that appear on all the national flags of the world at
the present time
