2. ,,A visit at devil Boruta’s”
Tum and Łęczyca
are two towns where
you are bound to come
across the devil called
Boruta. There are
ruins that, according
to folk beliefs, are
haunted. Tourists
arriving in Łęczyca are
welcomed from afar by
the tower of the royal
palace which was built
in the 14th century by

The palace is the home of
the devil Boruta, Poland's
most notorious devil, of
whom there are different
depictions in the castle's
courtyard. The "castle"
Boruta, which guards the
castle's treasures, is in
the shape of an owl, the
"marshy" Boruta, who
guides people over

an insect, and the "water
spirit" Boruta, who drowns
people in ponds, looks like

The legend about the
noble called Boruta
Boruta was a lord of the
castle in Łęczyca. But

the king and his company
to get out of the swamp

Boruta lived in such a way
to go to hell after death.
However, he was too
cunning to let himself
agonize in hell. The legend
does not say how he did
it, but he did. Lucifer
made him the lord of all
Polish devils and gave the
land of Łęczycain

Therefore, Boruta came
back to his land and has
been present in Łęczyca
up today. The name
Boruta (what means
Forest) comes from
forest. In old Proto
beliefs, Boruta was a
demon identified with a
beardedforest guard
(keeper of animals, patron
saint of hunters). Another
theory says the name
Boruta has been taken
from the word ’pine’ (a
