Right off the bat, I observed short, quick sentences showing Jack s thoughts. Since he used to be in the military, he absorbs every little detail around him, predicting all of the possible outcomes. An example can be shown in this quote: Duke went back to his car. It bounced off the shoulder and straightened up. I followed him through the two miles. We killed our lights a hundred yards short of the driveway and made the turn. Took it slow. There was some moonlight. His fast and almost incomplete thoughts make him seem ready to react at any moment. While making Reacher s character consistent, Lee Child also demonstrates thorough knowledge about military technology topics. At one point in the book, Reacher uses an old school code to communicate a secret message to someone. Also, with each weapon that comes up in the book, Jack Reacher seems to have a deep understanding of all of them.
