This document summarizes Terry Sunderland's presentation on operationalizing landscape approaches in practice. Some key points: CIFOR has focused on landscape-scale research since 1993 examining topics like sustainable livelihoods and managing conservation and development tradeoffs. However, a review found many "landscape-scale" projects were actually focused on protected areas. A new project aims to address gaps between landscape theory and weak implementation by facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue across sectors and scales in selected countries. It seeks to empower marginalized groups, test how landscape approaches reduce land use conflicts, and link research, policy and practice. The project provides an opportunity to challenge paradigms and build on networks to understand ever-changing landscapes.
