Using Business Source Complete Database
1.
2. When should I use Business
Source Complete?
0 Use Business Source Complete database when you are
looking for articles on business-related topics.
0 Business Source Complete has articles from
magazines, trade publications, newspapers, and
scholarly/academic business journals.
0 You can also use Business Source Complete to find
company and industry information.
4. The Library Website
0 http://library.daytonastate.edu/
0 Note: You can also find Company and Industry
information using Hoover’s Premium database.
5.
6. Look at the menu on the right.
Click on the link that says
“Databases.”
7.
8.
9. Click on the letter “B.” Scroll
down and click on the title of
Business Source Complete.
10.
11.
12. Log In
0 Your borrower ID is your student ID #
0 Your PIN is the last four digits of your Social Security
number
13.
14.
15. Now you’re ready to search
0If you need scholarly journal articles,
put a check in the box that says
“Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals”
0Type your topic into the search box then
click on the “Search” button
0You need to spell your search terms
correctly
0You don’t need to use any of the other
boxes or limiters
16.
17.
18. Working with your results
0Your results are sorted by relevance
0That means the “best” results are on
top, not the newest
0Use the slider on the left to weed out
older dates. Business research should be
no more than five years old.
0Click and hold the slider, drag it to the
date you want, and click on “Update”
19.
20.
21. Now all your results are from
within the past five years
22. Read the article
0Click on “PDF Full Text” below the
article description
0If you have a choice between PDF and
HTML Full Text, choose PDF.
0PDF articles come with page numbers.
If you use a quote from your article in
your paper, you will need the page
number. HTML does not have page
numbers.
23.
24.
25. Using article tools
0Look at the “Tools” menu at the right of
the page
0From here, you can print the article, or
email it to yourself
0You can also print or save the article by
using the icons at the top of the article
(make these appear by placing the
mouse near the bottom of the page)
26.
27. Citing the Article
0 Under the Tools menu, find the icon that looks like a
yellow sheet of paper.
0 When you mouse over it, it will say “Cite.”
0 Click on that, then choose your citation style (APA, for
business) from the list.
0 You can copy and paste the citation into your works
cited or references page.
0 Note: the citation will likely be WRONG. Check with
an APA style guide for the correct format.
0 This does not give you the in-text citation.
28.
29.
30. What’s wrong with the
previous citation?
0 This is a good example of a citation done incorrectly
by the databases.
0 The authors and article title should not be in all caps.
The correct citation should read:
0 Matta, F. K., Scott, B. A., Koopman, J., & Conlon, D. E.
(2015). Does seeing “eye to eye” affect work
engagement and organizational citizenship
behavior? A role theory perspective on LMX
agreement. Academy Of Management Journal, 58(6),
1686-1708. doi:10.5465/amj.2014.0106
31. 2. Finding Company and
Industry Information in
Business Source Complete
You can also find company and industry information in Hoover’s
Premium database. Instructions for using Hoover’s are in another
tutorial on your Business Infoguide.
32. Searching for Company
Information
0Use the company name itself to search.
Don’t add any qualifiers.
0It is not necessary to check the Scholarly (Peer
Reviewed) box when searching for company
information.
33.
34.
35. Using Your Results
0Rather than use the results list, look at
the left side of the page. You will see the
company’s name listed as a link. Click on
that link.
0The new results will give you everything
you need for the company, including
academic/scholarly journals (left
menu).
36.
37.
38. Industry Information
0If you need more information on the
industry, you can search for scholarly
articles using the information in Part 1
of this tutorial. Even if you don’t find
scholarly/academic articles on the
company, you likely will for the industry.
0Don’t forget to limit your results to the
last five years.
