“I propose that science be taught at whatever level, from the lowest to the
highest, in the humanistic way. It should be taught with a certain historical
understanding, with a certain philosophical understanding, with a social
understanding and a human understanding in the sense of the biography, the
nature of the people who made this construction, the triumphs, the trials, the
tribulations.

INTRODUCTION OF HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ Harvard Project Physics was a national curriculum development
project for Senior High School physics education in United States.
▰ HPP wad originated in (1962 – 1972) in Harvard university, F. James
Rutherford was the Project Director.
▰ HPP was formed to develop as a course of physics one that is appealing
& instructive to wide variety of students from science oriented to
science-shy.

PHILOSOPHY BEHIND HPP
▰ Physics is for everyone.
▰ A coherent selection within physics is possible.
▰ Doing physics goes beyond physics.
▰ Individual require a flexible course.
▰ A multimedia system simulates better learning.
▰ The time has come to teach science as one of the humanities.
▰ Physics course should be rewarding to take.
▰ Physics course should be rewarding to teach.
6
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF
HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ To help students increase their knowledge of the physical world by
concentrating on ideas that characterize physics as a science best,
rather than concentrating on isolated bits of information.
▰ To help students see physics as the wonderfully, many-sided human
activity that it really is. This means presenting the subject from a
historical and cultural perspective and showing that the ideas of physics
have traditional and evolutionary ways of adapting and changing.
7
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF
HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ To increase the opportunity for each student to have immediately
rewarding experiences in science even when gaining the knowledge and
skill that will be useful in the long run.
▰ To make it possible for instructors to adapt the course to the wide range
of interests and abilities of their students.
▰ To take into account the importance of the instructor in the educational
process, and the vast spectrum of teaching situations that prevail”

SALIENT FEATURES OF
HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ The books presented the material from a historical perspective, with
aspects of human interest wrapped into the text.
▰ The course materials also included readers, tests, and other teaching
aids.
▰ The course readers allowed students to further explore a topic, and lab
exercises enabled students to verify that their understanding was
confirmed by experimental outcomes.
▰ Special lab equipment, brief film loops, films, and a teacher's guide were
also developed

MATERIAL’S PRODUCED
▰ Textbook (Project Physics Text)
▰ Tests
▰ Handbook
▰ Students Guide
▰ Brief film loops
▰ Student laboratory manual
11
MERITS OF HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ The adaptability of the materials allows teachers incorporate new
teaching idea while still using the framework of Project Physics.
▰ The readers are designed to supply the students with a variety of
supplemental materials either to enrich the material in class, or to
develop deeper understanding of physics.
▰ The casual style makes this and many of the articles intriguing to
read.
12
MERITS OF HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ There is a great emphasis on literacy and that it is integrated into all
subjects.
▰ In third phase of development of project, in-service training for
teachers were conducted to get acquainted with curriculum.
▰ Various activities, experiments, info. column, images related to topic
are along with each chapter and lab work was also synchronized.
13
DEMERIT OF HARVARD PROJECT PHYSICS
▰ The population of students taking HPP, were even labeled to be
academically superior & more scientifically inclined than average one,
therefore generalization made from the study are limited due to
sample selection.
▰ The curriculum being studied concern itself with a limited number of
historical topics than other courses of similar approach to science
teaching.
14
CONCLUSION
▰ The Harvard Project Physics curriculum is a masterpiece. Although this
was created in the 1960's and mainly in use during the 1970’s.
▰ The adaptability of the materials would allow teachers incorporate new
teaching idea while still using the framework of Project Physics.
▰ With a great deal of hands-on activities and a focus on literacy, the
curriculum would meet the goals set forth by most school districts today.
▰ HPP is a course that altered how all future science curriculums would be
developed. 15
