India and Singapore inked 3rd Protocol for amending - DTAA
Among Important International Current Affairs, India and Singapore have signed a Third Protocol to
amend DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) for the avoidance of double taxation and
prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.
However, it was signed in line with India’s treaty policy to prevent double non-taxation, curb revenue
loss and check the menace of black money through automatic exchange of information.
Period of enhanced Prepaid Payment Instruments limit extended by – RBI
Among Important National Current Affairs, RBI (The Reserve Bank of India) has extended the period of
enhanced Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) limit of Rs 20,000 as part of efforts to promote digital
payments.
However, the limit has been extended till the completion of review of the PPI guidelines.
Also, the balance in such PPIs cannot exceed Rs 20,000 at any point of time and the merchants can
transfer their funds from such PPIs to their own linked bank accounts up to Rs 50,000 per month,
without any limit per transaction.
Who takes over as next Chief of Army Staff - General Bipin Rawat

Army Staff (CoAS) of India.
However, he succeeds General Dalbir Singh Suhag who retired from the service.
He had also superseded two senior most Lt Generals, Praveen Bakshi and PM Hariz. Also his
appointment goes against the long-held convention of appointing the senior-most eligible officer to the
topmost post.

from attacking each other’s nuclear facilities.

professor of chemistry has received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to the

However, Balasubramanian, 50, Herchel Smith Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Cambridge
University, has been recognised for his work as a co-inventor of Next Generation DNA sequencing, and
also described as the most transformational advance in biology and medicine for decades.
India successfully test-fires - Agni IV Missile
Among Important National Current Affairs, India has successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable strategic
ballistic missile named as ‘Agni-IV’ with a strike range of 4000 km as part of a user trial from a test range
off Odisha coast.
However, supported by a mobile launcher the surface-to-surface missile was flight tested from launch
complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Dr Abdul Kalam Island, which is formerly known as
Wheeler Island, at about 11.55 hours, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
According to the sources, this was the 6th trial of the indigenously developed Agni-IV missile which met
the mission objectives.
Also, the last trial conducted by the specially formed strategic force command (SFC) of Indian Army on
9th November, 2015 was also successful.

candidates cannot seek votes on the grounds of the religion, caste, creed, community or language of
voters.
However, the ruling was given by a 4-3 majority of the seven-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief
Justice TS Thakur.
It was held that if the candidate is found violating the order will result into call for his disqualification.
Who has been appointed as new UPSC chairman - David R Syiemlieh

Pranab Mukherjee as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as per Article 316 of
Constitution.
However, he will take over all the responsibility from Alka Sirohi and shall remain the head of the
organisation till his retirement on 21st January, 2018 or till further orders.
Also, prior to this appointment he was functioning as a UPSC member from 25th June, 2012.
Government launched what in 500 cities - Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2017

Swachh Survekshan 2017 to rank 500 cities/towns across the country on cleanliness with a population of

RBI appointed whom as an Executive Director - Surekha Marandi

Marandi as an Executive Director. She will now look after financial inclusion, among other departments.
Surekha Marandi took charges and also replaces U S Paliwal, who retired on 31st December, 2016.

Department, Financial Inclusion and Development Department and Secretary’s Department, the central

inaugurated the 104th Indian Science Congress at Tarakarama Stadium of Sri Venkateswara University in

Government approved new projects under Namami Gange for - Haridwar and Varanasi

new projects, which is under Namami Gange programme in Haridwar (Uttarakhand) and Varanasi (Uttar

However in Haridwar, about 68 MLD sewage treatment plants (STP) and 14 MLD STP in Sarai was with
Central government funding and also under Hybrid Annuity based PPP mode.
Besides this, 50 MLD sewage treatment plant at Ramana in Varana under Hybrid Annuity-based PPP
mode was also approved.

India’s GDP growth expected to be slower in 2016-17 at – 7.1%

World Bank holds meet with India on - Indus Water Treaty

deal on its dispute with Pakistan over Ratle and Kishenganga projects coming up in the state Jammu and
Kashmir.
However, India also conveyed its position during a meeting with World Bank representative in New
Delhi. India asserted that the differences between India and Pakistan can be resolved bilaterally or
through a neutral expert.
MIT researchers develop super strong, lightweight - 3D Graphene
Among Important National Current Affairs, Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) have developed 3D version of graphene by compressing and fusing flakes of graphene, a two-
dimensional form of carbon.
However, Graphene is to be one of the strongest materials known to man but so far because of its
extreme thinness it was not able for practical use.
Also, the 3D version of Graphene was produced using a combination of heat and pressure. It produced
stable structures called diatom.

Which country to set up world’s highest altitude gravitational wave telescopes in Tibet – China
Among Important International Current Affairs, China is setting up the world’s highest altitude
gravitational wave observatory in a Tibet prefecture close to Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India.
However, the telescope will detect and gather precise data on primordial gravitational waves in the
Northern Hemisphere. The construction work of the first telescope code-named Ngari No.1 as part of
first phase has started. It is expected to be operational by 2021.
Also, it is located at located 5,250 meters above sea level, 30kms south of Shiquanhe Town in Ngari
Prefecture at China’s border with India. In the second phase series of telescopes, code-named Ngari No.
2 will be set up about 6,000 meters above sea level.
The high altitude of Ngari observatory provides clear sky to detect tiny twists in cosmic light and has
minimal human activity. This observatory will be among the world’s top primordial gravitational wave
observation bases, alongside the South Pole Telescope and the facility in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
Indian Army conducts test of indigenous heavy artillery gun - Dhanush

trials of indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System i.e. ATAGS Dhanush in the Himalayas.

SC wants what in EVMs for fair elections – VVPAT
Among Important National Current Affairs, The Supreme Court has finally reiterated the necessity to
implement the Vote Verifier Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in electronic voting machines (EVMs) to ensure
100% transparency in elections.
However, this is the second time the Supreme Court has directed Election Commission (EC) for the
implementation of VVPAT in EVMs.
In the year 2013, SC had directed the EC to introduce VVPAT in a phased manner for 2014 general
elections. SC had also observed that VVPAT will ensure free and fair polls and help in sorting out
disputes.
Though, in response the EC had informed the apex court that the VVPAT can be introduced in a phased
manner.
New Ginger species with medicinal properties discovered in - Andamans
Among Important National Current Affairs, Scientists from Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have
discovered a new species of Zingiber which is commonly referred as ginger from the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands.
However, the new species has been named as Zingiber pseudosquarrosum and belongs to genus
Zingiber.
Also, it is used for its medicinal values by the local Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of the
Andamans.
Pakistan test-fires first nuclear-capable submarine cruise missile - Babur-3
Among Important International Current Affairs, Pakistan has successfully test-fired its first Submarine-
Launched Cruise Missile (SLCM) named as Babur-3, which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
However, this launch gives Pakistan a “credible” second-strike capability.
Here, the Babur-3 missile was fired from an underwater mobile platform from an undisclosed location in
the Indian Ocean and hit its target with precise accuracy.

using an updated version of the low-cost Kuaizhou-1A rocket.

province.

According to the report, after a post-crisis low 2016, the global economy will accelerate moderately to

Expert Group on SECC submits report to - Rural Development Ministry

and Caste Census (SECC) and has submitted its report to the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD).

Name of first ever Military Communications Satellite launched by Japan - Kirameki-2
Among International Current Affairs, On 24th January 2017, Japan launched its first military
communications satellite Kirameki-2 to boost the broadband capacity of its armed forces with an aim to
reinforce its presence at the southern edge of the East China Sea.
Mistubishi H-IIA rocket was used to launch this satellite from southern-most islands of Japan.
New system to manage air traffic has been launched by - AAI
On 26th January 2017, Airports Authority of India launched Central - Air Traffic Flow Management (C-
ATFM) on the occasion of 68th Republic Day. This system will be helpful to cut the flight delays.
AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra opened a dedicated C-ATFM facility at Delhi's new Air Traffic
Services Complex and soon this system will be replicated at all the airports and in entire Indian airspace.

19. First ever Women's Football Professional League was launched by - AIFF
On 24th January 2017, All India Football Federation (AIFF) launched first ever Women Professional
Leauge in India at New Dehli.
AIFF President Praful Patel launched this event while Union Minister of State (Independent Charge)
Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel and 2016 Summer Olympics wrestling bronze medalist Sakshi Malik
were also present in the event.
This league will be held for two weeks at Ambedkar Football Stadium in New Delhi starting from 28th
January 2017.
Power Grid Corporation of India inked MoU with - Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority
On 25th January 2017, Central Power Sector PSU Power Grid Corporation of India inked Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA). Managing Director of
Abu Dhabi Distribution Co (UAE) Saeed Al Suwaidi and Executive Director- International Business of
POWERGRID Mr Anil Mehra in the presence of IS Jha, CMD of POWERGRID.
As per MoU both companies will work together in the fields of capability development and training in
the field of Operation & Maintenance (O&M), Asset Management, Project Management, Power
Transmission & Distribution, etc.
ADWEA will also be assisted by POWERGRID to set up an advanced World Class Capability Development
institute in UAE.
Name of Russian ambassador to India who passed away - Alexander Kadakin
On 26th January 2017, Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin was passed away after a brief
illness. He was 67 years old and he held this position from 2009.
He played a major role in ties of India and Russia. He was fond of Indian Culture and Language. He also
authored and translated many books from English and Hindi.
Cryogenic Engine for Upper Stage of GSLV Mk III was successfully tested by - ISRO
On 25th January 2017, The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully tested indigenously
developed Cryogenic Upper Stage for GSLV Mk III rocket. It is scheduled to launch GSAT-19 during first
quarter of 2017.

 Cryogenic engines are generally used in the upper stage of a rocket launch as they offer
maximum thrust to a launcher vehicle.
 Cryogenic upper stage is the most powerful upper stage developed by ISRO and uses Liquid
Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen propellant combination.

Among Important appointments, On 27th January 2017, Banwarlal Purohit and P B Acharya were

Mukherjee. As of now Banwarlal Purohit is serving as Governor of Assam while Padmanabha Balakrishna
Acharya is serving as Governor of Nagaland.

On 25th January 2017, Dr Vijay Bhatkar was appointed as Chancellor of Nalanda University by President
of India Pranab Mukherjee.

Name of Exercise of Indian Navy which began on 24th January 2017 - TROPEX 17
On 24th January 2017, Annual Theatre Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX) of Indian Army began
at Western Seaboard. This is scheduled to held till fourth week of February 2017. In this excercise Ships
and aircraft of both the Western and Eastern Naval Commands are participating and this excercise is
aimed at testing the combat readiness of the combined fleets of the Indian Navy and the assets of the
Indian Air Force, Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.
Who has been appointed as Chairman of African Union Commission - Moussa Faki Mahamat
On 30th January 2017, Chad's Moussa Faki Mahamat was elected as the Chairman of the African Union
(AU) Commission.
She will be first woman to lead AU and will be succeeding Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma of South Africa.

On 30th January 2017, Union Government launched nationwide Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign
with an aim to communicate importance of early detection and treatment of leprosy.

RBI gave Payments Bank licence to - India Post

Bank licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Now India Post will be able to work as a Payments
Bank.
Paytm and Bharti Airtel already have Payments Bank licence so India Post is third one to get it. India Post
started its operations in this field by rolling out pilot projects in Raipur and Ranchi. It will also be giving

• Indian economy may recover back to 6.75 per cent to 7.5 per cent in 2017-18.
• During April - November 2016, Indirect taxes grew by 26.9 per cent.
• The average CPI inflation declined to 4.9 per cent in 2015-16 from 5.9 per cent in 2014-15 and stood at
4.8 per cent during April-December 2015.
• Rupee performed better in 2016-17 among other emerging market economies.
• There is estimate 4.1 percent growth in Agriculture sector in 2016-17 as compared to 1.2 percent in
2015-16.
• The Parliament has passed the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
