8. Beton Brut uses basic geometric shapes—
square, circle, triangle—to form each letter
of the alphabet. Like bricks of a building,
the letters of Beton Brut are minimal
pictograms and architecture for language.
The name refers to a style coined by
Brutalist architects to describe the poured
board-marked, repetitive angular concrete
structure and aesthetic of many modernist
buildings. Broken down to essential visual
elements, the letters are structurally
expressive and can almost disappear into
pattern. Here the type reflects language of
our time: abstraction.

“The New Alphabet” dessiné par Wim
Crouwel en 1967 est une typographie
futuriste basée sur une matrice de points,
afin qu’elles soit facilement lisible sur un
écran d’ordinateur. “The New New Alphabet”
(2008) a été créée par Ryan Gander en
collaboration avec Rasmus Spanggaard
Troelsen. Gander a superposé les caractères
du “New Alphabet” et ceux de l’“Helvetica”
(1957) et a tracé le dessin de leur différence.
Troelsen a ensuite a repris ces tracés pour en
faire une série de 36 caractères. “The New
New Alphabet” est destiné à être imprimé
en surimpression de The “New Alphabet”,
lui faisant gagner en lisibilité ce qu’il perd
en élégance. Selon Emily King, “le N.N.A.
devrait être lu comme une incursion dans le
débat philosophique sur les limites de ce que
l’on peut qualifier de type.”
