from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line.
D. Edge Cutting Tools
1. CHISEL – is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood
chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for
carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck
with a mallet, or mechanical power.
2. PLANE – is a tool for shaping wood using muscle power to force the cutting blade
over the wood surface.

E. Tooth-Cutting Tools
1. CROSS CUT SAW – is any saw designed for cutting wood perpendicular to (across)
the wood grain.
2. RIP-SAW – a wood saw that is specially designed for making a rip cut, a cut made
parallel to the direction of the wood grain.
3. BACK SAW – any hand saw which has a stiffening rib on the edge opposite the
cutting edge, enabling better control and more precise cutting than with other types
of saws.
4. COMPASS SAW – a type of saw used for making curved cuts known as compasses,
particularly in confined spaces where a larger saw would not fit.
5. TURNING SAW – a thin-bladed saw contrived for cutting curved wood for chair-
backs.
6. COPING SAW – a type of bow saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior
cut-outs in woodworking or carpentry.

7. DOVETAIL SAW – a small backsaw with thin blade, fine teeth, and straight handle
used for accurate work (as in cabinetmaking and patternmaking).
F. Boring Tools
1. AUGER BIT – a drilling device, or drill bit, used for making holes in wood or in the
ground.
2. EXPANSIVE BIT – a bit with a cutting blade that can be adjusted to various sizes.
3. DRILL BIT – are cutting tools used to remove material to create holes, almost always
of circular cross-section.
G. Holding Tools
1. C-CLAMP – type of clamp device typically used to hold a wood or metal work piece,
and often used in, but are not limited to, carpentry and welding.
2. BENCH VISE – a holding device attached to a workbench; has two jaws to hold
workpiece firmly in place.
3. BAR CLAMP – a frame consisting of a long bar with two adjustable clamping jaws
that is used usually in woodwork or cabinetmaking for holding large work.
