Project Location
Located in Osaka's dense Business District, the project
sits on what was formerly the site of a dormant baseball
stadium. Within this formidable, grey environment, JERDE
envisioned Namba Parks as a canyon cutting through an
urban park - an awe-inspiring respite for the people of
Osaka.

Namba Parks is a massive shopping complex in
the Minami area of Osaka with an unique
architectural structure. In an attempt to bring
some natural greenery into Osaka’s concrete
jungle, the building is composed of a series of
rising terraces with rooftop gardens at each level.
Through the center of the structure there is a huge “canyon” which
provides dramatic viewpoints from every floor. Around this canyon are 9
floors of shops, restaurants, and other facilities such as a cinema, and an
outdoor rooftop arena.

Section of namba park
This northward sectional view shows the relative narrowness of
the canyon as it cuts through the eight levels of retail uses above
grade. At the extreme left is the elevated viaduct of the Osaka-
Kobe Expressway, and at grade, Midosuji. Facing the street, the
30-story office tower provides a buffer for Namba parks.

13
Interior of Namba park
The open space is curvilinear and non-planar in all dimensions. An elevator
tower rises in the oval center and glass-enclosed pedestrian bridges traverse
the canyon at various points at different levels, connecting the interior spaces.
Though the project's
interior was originally
conceived by the
client as a simple
concrete passageway
to connect the
southern parcel of
the site to the
crowded, people-
intensive northern
parcel, we proposed
a natural 'canyon'
instead.

Constructed from bands of colored stone, the
canyon reinforces the project's connection with
nature while forming the primary circulation
pattern.

PHOTOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF ROOFTOP GARDEN 15
The park provides the community with an abundance of
amenities within the urban environment, including gardens,
gathering spaces, quiet flower-lined pathways, and
performance venues, providing a vital connection to nature.
Features like the community gardens help to
weave Namba Parks into the fabric of people's
lives.
During the summer, when asphalt can reach
124 degrees Fahrenheit and concrete is 113,
the rooftop park is only 93.ftop
Photographic analysis of rooftop garden
The signature park features trees, miniature ponds, shrubbery,
and planting beds—all irrigated by recycled water filtered from
the graywater of the restaurants within the complex.

The presence
of this multi-
family tower,
alongside the
office complex
and eight-
level retail
center make
this a true
mixed-use
project.
Phase 2 of Namba Parks brought the
project's second tower and 344 of
for-rent apartments.
The project created 6,400 jobs
and generates over
$140,000,000 in annual sales
