1. Calculation of heart
rate by examination
of arterial pulses
Dr. Irtaza Rehman
(Author of The Extraordinary Life)
2.
3. Learning objectives
• To know all major arterial pulsations
• To calculate the heart rate from arterial
pulsations
• To understand pathologies associated with
arterial pulsations
4. What is
Arterial
Pulse?
• The arterial pulse is the
abrupt ‘expansion’ of an
artery resulting from the
sudden ‘ejection’ of blood
into the aorta and its
‘transmission’ throughout
the arterial system.
5. The difference
between systolic and
dystolic pressure
(120-80=40mm of Hg)
What is
Pulse
Pressure?
It can be felt as a throb or a pulse in the arteries
9. Significance of arterial pulse
• Heart rate calculation
• Diagnosis of diseases
• Assessment of: Rate, rhythm, volume, character,
condition of vessel wall, comparison between
two arteries.
10. Abdullah’s pulse is
examined. We have
following findings.
90 b/min
Regular
Strength/force is normal/strong
Catacrotic/normal
Elastic/compressible
Similar on both sides
Am I Normal??
Aoa, em Abdullah!
